Based on what little info we have; can anyone speak to the power consumption, heat generation, and fan noise? As a musician; having used the M1 Air for nearly a year; I can tell you I'm ecstatic about the total lack of heat and fan noise issues. My previous was a 17” MacBook Pro, which fried two graphics chips, and always sounded like a vacuum cleaner. Plus I could only do a few hours of recording/editing on battery. So, with the M1 Air, I'm getting no noise, no heat, an internal SSD 10x faster, and the ability to do real work on battery for almost the entire day.

The new MacBook Pro's? My understanding is that the Max chips come with a beefier cooling system than the pros. In comparison to the M1Pro, are Max users going to experience higher power consumption and decreased battery life along with related heat and fan noise?

Two thoughts:

1. If you perform the same tasks on a MacBook Air M1 and a MacBook Pro M1 Pro/Max the same amount of work should be done, generating about the same amount of heat, so you shouldn’t have a vacuum cleaner effect.

2. The Mac Pro uses lots of power and generates a lot of heat, but is still practically silent. Hopefully Apple has put just as much effort into the MBP cooling system.

Ordered the 14" with the Max, cancelled it because I thought I'd go for Pro then have just cancelled and gone back to the Max because I don't want to regret it and I'm stupid ;D Guess what? Now I'm looking at Late November/ early December but now I feel right with my choice ? Just don't mind me being jealous at everyone getting theirs before me hahaha

I have a feeling that musicians/engineers are going to have a mostly fanless experience. Unless you plan to run 200 instances of heavy Massiv or Reaktor patches /s

Hah, I did the same, except I went with the 24 GPU one and then was like, wth it's only 180 extra (student discount) for the full 32 GPUs. I did it right after the event though, so I am expecting mine between 6-9th November.

Now I am wondering whether I made the right choice going Space Grey rather than Silver, but I don't want to cancel and order again. I had a Space Grey MBP 2017 and felt like I had to clean it more, specially during the wrist rests area. My Silver M1 MBA has been great, but I do like the look of the space grey more.

I purchased the base M1Pro 14” on announcement day for delivery 10/26. I struggled with not upgrading the hd to 1TB seeing as my iphone has 512gb but it pushed out the delivery date quite a bit and I have to leave town in the middle of the pushed out date. I thought well, I can always get an external HD but now I’m second guessing that. I wonder what the chances are of picking up a base model with 1TB in store faster than getting it delivered. I’m on a mid 2012 8ram 500gb hd and the video camera doesn’t work which is impossible in the current zoom environment. If my location were more certain, this would be easier but I really can’t predict where I’ll be which makes shipping windows a hassle. I probably would be fine with an air, but I like that the pros stay relevant for so many years and I like the SD slot. Any thoughts?
Can you give us a quick review on 10/26/2021 ? And pictures if possible?

And lots of ppl complaining and whining about mostly esoteric items. Apple users are definitely pampered. Coming from other platforms where you have no choice other than to use their crappy product (for a multitude of reasons)...I'd say complaining about a little fan noise, warm laptop, etc could be a first world problem.

Same here, or let’s hope so. They said in the presentation that for most tasks the fans will not even need to come on. If so that’s a big improvement for the 16” — previous 15” and 16” models were always on, min 2,000 rpm iirc.

2,000 rpm is barely audible to be fair, but 0 rpm even better for recording. Bonus if you can get close to a final mix without it going into hairdryer mode.

I ordered M1 Pro - hoping for less hair dryer sound than M1Max ...

Still I don't understand the point of adding that old "mag safe" port, while you can charge it via USB-C port (thus having 2 charging ports). And wasting the space for another USB-C port or USB - that is crazily missing. While SD or HDMI are almost completely useless ...

From a consumer standpoint you may be right on a couple of things here...

.. but you also have to understand that the MBP wasn't just made for the consumer.

Businesses could use that HDMI port, especially if needing to set up for meetings, demonstrations, product pitches, etc, without having to pull out various dongles to get things set up. Same for MagSafe, as it's an easy disconnect without potentially ruining the USB-C cord, let alone the port.

Besides, with USB-C being there, there could be the ability to simultaneously charge by MagSafe as well as by passthrough USB-C, giving you the ability to charge your Mac faster.

Sometimes one needs to look outside the scope of their own use to see what other potential uses everyone may have.
