Clearly a newbie question, but what's the closest laptop that Apple makes to our old [early-2011] MBP 17?

I'm aware of the MBP 16, that's been out for a while, but I don't get the time to research the internet, so I'm pretty much in the dark when it comes to such things. Any helpful recommendations?
the closest laptop apple makes to the old 17" is, like you said, the 16" mbp

Serban55..... Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my simple question. There are upsides and downsides to the new machines, but I assume that you know that. If I could ever figure out what the best permanent GPU fix for our sick early-2011 (Version 8.3) is, I think that I'd roll the dice in an effort to simply keep it in service.

As an EE, who started out as a USAF test equipment bench tech, I have a lot of soldering experience, but, alas, I don't have any "micro" or surface-mount soldering equipment available to me. Therefore, the hardware fixes that I've researched may be out of the realm of possibility. If you happen to have any knowledge of what latest word on the 2011 MBP GPU fix is, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the matter.

Thanks again ~ MacBook17

Tried to sell my almost maxed out 16” that just got new display, top case (with keyboard, trackpad, speakers, microphones) and battery under warranty for adequate price with no success so I’ve chosen to keep it instead of lowering the price and exchanging 1:1 on maxed out 13” M1. Don‘t think I’m going to exchange it on 16” M1X/M2 if there won’t be Mini-led or OLED with ProMotion to justify even bigger loss.
The current 16" are loosing value a lot. I'm afraid they will lose even more when Apple release the successor with M1X. I'm lucky because I have successfully sold my MacBook Pro 16 for a good very price in this week! Currently, I still have my company MBP 15 2018 so I'll wait for what Apple will show this year.

what are the downside with the new machine vs your old 17" mbp?
againm you are getting a new machined to use it.. if you cant use the M1 for your usage, you still can pick the current 16" Intel version

mini-Led, yes, maybe, but OLED...0 % chances and it is a good choice for a laptop/monitor/tv
but why you want to sell your 1 year old mbp ? since you care more for the display rather than performance?!
I mean, clearly the new 16" will be better in probably everyway than the intel ones...
Keep your 16" , it is good for another 2-3 years

Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't really care about OLED or micro LED that much. I personally find the screens on the intel macbooks to be very, very good.

Additionally, when I tried to compare iPhones with OLED screens vs. those with LCD (XS vs XR, etc), I could barely tell any difference even with dark photos. I don't really watch many movies on my laptop anyway, so I suppose it would only really help with video editing or photo editing.

I'd take it if included or maybe +$100, but I couldn't see paying +$400 or something like that for a fancier screen which Apple might try to charge.

Yeah, I would personally much rather have a higher refresh rate with ProMotion than the deeper blacks and higher contrast levels provided by OLED and local-dimming tech.

I want a 16 M1x, but I have a few reservations. Will it be able to run dual monitors? The M1 can not currently. But I guess my main hold up is bootcamp. It's really nice to be able to boot into windows, even to play some games after work. For these reasons, I think I'm just going to get a loaded 16 inch with the i9 and 5600m gpu.
If the higher end “pro” machines cannot run something as simple as multiple high DPI screens, then they will be dead on arrival.

Intel MacBook Pro’s, the 15 inch and 16 inch, have been able to run two 5K displays for years. The 16 inch can run two 6K displays.

16 inch. Before that was the 15 inch, so I think it’s fair to say there was no replacement for the 17 inch. Not truly, anyway.

They won't release a new 16" unless it can handle monitors, but what type of GPU they ship is definitely one of the biggest question marks.

CPU? Will just be a scaled up version of the M1 with 8-32 cores.

As an old vet...emphasis on "old"... I can tell you that these old eyes are very happy with the non-glare 17" monitor I've been using for close to 10 years now. I don't care for the smaller "retina" displays, so that's a downside for me. Replacing a machine we paid a fortune for with another that we'll be paying a second fortune for is second downside...and, finally, the lack of user serviceability and connectivity is a problem for me.

Thanks for getting back to me about this, but there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of confidence in the current "Intel" version of the MBP 16 in the Mac community.

Please dont pay for a mac if its for you a fortune....no tech is worth it this way ....it doesnt worth it
Go with windows, there are few and great 17" , so no need to downgrade to a smaller display either...and are less expensive too :)

Just checking in to this thread, I was a member of the waiting for skylake mbp thread about six years ago (great thread) but got tired of waiting and got a 2015 15" mbp and never regretted my decision but did miss that thread.

The 2015 mbp is still going strong but the time is coming to pass it on to my son, I've held off buying before because of that god awful Touch Bar and it's associated price bump.

All I want is :

New mbp (probably 14")
M1 chip or derivative of
No touch bar
At least 16 Gb RAM

Can't wait to see what Apple come out with

My biggest hesitation and reason I can't buy any of the current offerings is due to lack of multiple display options. Since what feels like the dawn of time I've had my laptop + 2 external monitors (so 3 total). Big limitation of the current M1, even though power wise and size wise I'm more than happy with what's available. Very annoying.

I guess I will get the first M1 equipped 16" MBP. My 13" MPB from 2013 is acting strange at the moment, e.g. interrupted and bad audio quality, screen flickering...

I read that the new Macbook's may be released as early as the third quarter, does anybody know what month that is?

July-September. Might mean a WWDC (June) announcement with July availability or a July MacBook Pro event. That would fit with previous summer MacBook Pro releases going back to 2014.

Calendar quarters are just Jan/Feb/Mar, Apr/May/June, July/Aug/Sep, Oct/Nov/Dec. They aren't talking about other fiscal quarters.

Seems pretty possible we could get a WWDC announcement, though they traditionally have not done hardware announcements then.

I've also a mid-2015 15" MBP and am looking to upgrade, probably to the 16" as I've enjoyed the larger 15" over the 13" MBPs I had before.

Have been waiting to see how the hype surrounding the M1 chip panned out and now it is favourable, I'm swithering between jumping in and deferring gratification even further ..

I'm also considering what to add-on to the basic configuration and have come up with the following:
  • 2.3GHz 8-core 9th-generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.8GHz
  • 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory
  • 2TB SSD storage
On usage: I like to keep purchases for a while, I also tend to have lots of things open and have really benefitted from the 16GB RAM in the 2015 MBP. I occasionally do some heavy numerical processing and I've just begun experimenting with video. I also (used to) travel a lot.

Given how close we are to Apple releasing their Apple Silicon versions of the high-end 13" (maybe 14") and their 16" MBPs, and you can wait (sounds like you can), I would wait. We don't know what we don't know, but expectations are that these versions will significantly outperform their Intel-chipped counterparts.

So I would recommend waiting to see what those look like before making a decision. Especially since you said you prefer to keep your laptops / purchases for awhile, even more so better to do so when you have more information. And if there's ever a time where there's a significant information gap, it's now, on the verge of the full line-up release of the ASi Macs.

After you see what the new 16" ASi MBPs look like, and you still want the Intel version, no problem, and it's fair to say those Intel versions will likely be cheaper than they are today.

Yes, and I'm also hoping that at least one of my 'add-ons' might be bundled ;) Part of my impatience is the 'deal' I've made to pass on my 2015 MBP to a daughter who is toiling with a much earlier model.
