Wonder how or if Apple will segment their CPU into tiers (as of now) like clock speed

They will do what they do with the A series CPUs iN the iPhones

A8, of A8X for iPad Pros. They are up to A14 in iPhones and A12X for iPad Pros.

Im gonna wait for the M2X with the 120Hz OLED MacBook Pros. The current M1 and M1X can’t handle 120hz Displays.

Im looking at 2022.

#1. M2X more cache, faster Cores
#2. LPDDR5 RAM (my Note 20 Ultra has 12GB of it) Apple needs to go LPDDR5 in 2022
#3. 120Hz OLED Display made by Samsung (60Hz MiniLED is a fools trap)
(built in Face ID
)
#4. WiFi 6e
#5. HDMI 2.1 output
#6. Thunderbolt 4

You are waiting for a product that may not even exist. OLED and 120hz in the same generation is unlikely, let alone it occurring next year. All the others seem feasible.

Apparently, we are going into another summer with hot 15" and 16", that will be boiling hot if we connect external monitors.

So, if I want a cool 15" and do not want an eGPU, the only choice I have is to buy a used 15" MBP with Vega or even more expensive 16" with 5600 correct?
Vega looks like a less insane choice, but it will still depreciate by like 40% in 3-4 months when AS is out, correct?

Probably core based, M1X with 6 performance cores, M1X with 8 performance cores and maybe M1Z (incorporating better ‘lifuka’ graphics) with 8 or 10 performance cores. Similar to now (i7 6 core vs i9 8 core).

Yeah I could see that happening too.

I hope so. I have money to throw at them!
All I know is it would super wise for Apple to drop new laptops at the end of this month - what with everyone getting their stimulus... not that Apple could have known but damn! I really thought they were going to drop the new MBP’s in April of this year. *sigh*

I’m praying I get through to fall. I’m starting to regret returning my M1 now.

4. Get rid of that "Macbook Pro" right in front of your face like what Dell did for their XPS 17's "infinity display".. c'mon the competititors are catching up.. be minimal..

This is actually one of my greatest pet peeves with the entire MacBook line up post-2015. I can't believe I don't see more people bring it up often.

It's just so incredibly unnecessary and pertually clutters your line of sight. MacBooks are distinctive enough for anyone to know what you're using in a single glance.

Reminds me of every Nokia Smartphone nowadays, which aggressively pushes their name onto the front of every single phone to remind people that the company still exists. It so tacky, ungraceful and honestly, reeks of desperation.

I have doubts, although nothing in my mind has changed recently about that. My hesitation though is less about thinking Gen 2 will have that much better features (this kind of thinking is pretty much always true), but more on risk of being initial buyers of Gen 1 redesigns.

I was a Day-1 purchaser of the 2016 13" MBP with Touchbar, the first year of the current design. And while I've still loved my MBP, I've had the spotlight issue on the display as well as had to replace the butterfly keyboard last year after some keys started sticking. Overall, it has given me a bit more hesitation on buying into 1st-gen redesigns.

I think I will likely still buy the 14" or 16" ASi MBPs, but for me, no need to go out on a limb and decide for sure now until it's actually announced and we have better info.

I'm having doubts about the M2X Macbook Pro. M3X will be much better.

Yes i completely agree with this. I think putting branding on the face of the product like that is so egregious. Apple should focus on the overall design being standout enough that the design itself is the branding. Like how the notch on the recent iPhones is the standout physical feature where you can just glance at it and know it's an iPhone. AirPods had the same thing going on when they were new. Let the design do the marketing for you.

Oh please, the M4X is going to be better and the M3X should be ignored.

Might be that MiniLED is the higher end choice than OLED. It makes sense, most colour accurate and reference monitors are LED. Apples own monitor is not OLED. The more FALD zones, the better quality screen.

The pricing tiers will definitely be interesting, especially when you consider the 14" and 16" will probably both use the M1-X. Personally, I'm thinking (and hoping) Apple does something a little more simple with upgrades so the lineup looks like this:

- 13" Air: M1 (8 core CPU / 7 core GPU). Can upgrade SSD, RAM to 16 and extra GPU core.

- 13" Pro: M1 (8 core CPU / 8 core GPU). Can upgrade SSD, RAM to 16)

- 14" Pro: M1-X (12 core CPU / 16 core GPU). Can upgrade SSD, RAM to 32)

- 16" Pro: M1-X (16 core CPU / either a 24 core GPU or a 16 core w/ Apple Dedicated GPU). Can upgrade SSD, RAM to 64

Too be fair, I can’t see a 16 core this generation. I mean it would be great but personally I think it’s doubtful. Same with 64GB RAM, I think the maximum will be 32GB. If what you say does come true, I think I’ll end up spitting my tea/coffee out during the announcement in shock :)

Do you think they will also update the keyboard a bit?

There & Back Again
The more I read through this thread the more pumped I'm getting for a new 16" Had my 2019 15" stolen 2 weeks ago - limping along with a couple of borrowed computers to avoid buying an intel 16" - but I'm struggling as I need it for my business!

I envision both MacBook sizes will use the same set of SoCs for economy of scale, maybe an 'M1Z' (see below) will be exclusive to the 16" similar to how dedicated graphics currently are, depending on how much heat it produces/ what the thermal envelope of the 14" is. I think your M1X core counts might be slightly optimistic at this stage.

M1X options with a 12(?) core GPU, probably a 30-35 watt TDP:
M1X - 10 cores (6 firestorm, 4 ice storm) - corresponding to the 6 core i7
M1X - 12 cores (8 firestorm, 4 ice storm) - corresponding to the 8 core i9

And at least one M1Z option with an upgraded 24(?) core GPU and likely a higher TDP to facilitate that:
M1Z - 12 cores (8 firestorm, 4 ice storm) - upgraded graphics option

They've already established with the iPads that 'Z' processors are graphics enhanced versions of 'X' processors, so the logic is in place for this already. I don't think they will simplify the upgrade tree too much, plenty of extra options are a good way of getting people to dig deeper in their pockets and raise average selling prices (which is an important metric in their financial reports). Assuming those three chip options each have 16, 32, 64 GB RAM options, that's 9 chip SKUs, for two MacBook Pros and likely a high-end Mac mini. They could trim it a bit by making 64GB exclusive to the M1Z.

Greetings to all. Just read this latest article on the 14": https://www.macrumors.com/guide/14-inch-macbook-pro/
I am in need of IT !!! The wait is going to be painful but worth it. Hopefully as soon as July, after the WWDC in June as mentioned here: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/02/25/14-16-macbook-pro-mini-led-display/
No chance to read all the thread yet, but can't understand why we can't get a non-integrated (removable / replaceable) battery. Had to pay a fortune for the whole keyboard section to replace a swollen battery on my early 2015 pro, & now it's swelling again after 2-1/2 yrs. That said, the M1 version battery performance has been noted elsewhere here to be far superior. Thanks for all the great posts here.
Blair.

The branding below the screen has never bothered my line of sight / tracking. Apple could have out the name on the bottom plate but, that would have been very unApple like. lol
