Not even a whisper of an apple even for October… maybe November? *sighs*
my 2019 5k iMac is slow as sh*t, not a fan of low powered gourmet iMacs. I’ve had better luck with MBP, was eager for this 2021 MBP
Man, ya'll with 2019 and 2020 macs waiting to upgrade are crazy. I've got an early 2011 macbook pro which has been upgraded as much as possible and actually performs well but hasn't been able to install the latest OS for the last few versions and now all the software is complaining as well. I've been waiting for years for Apple to release a decent mbp.

There's a catalina patcher apparently that lets older macbooks upgrade, but not sure if you want to trust it or not. I feel like it's sketchy to hack anything at the OS level.

I think I looked in to this at one point and it didn't support the Radeon HD 6750M GPU in it so I would be limited to Intel HD Graphics 3000 graphics

Assuming you order a MBP the first day it comes out what's the longest it could take to ship in the US? I assume it's first come first served and adding extra gigs of RAM is going to increase the expected time.

When I see the videos and pics on newscasts of all the ships waiting weeks to get into a US west coast port…I just don’t think it will happen when even Apple wants it to happen. Alas…I hope for an Oct event, but don’t think it’ll happen. Pessimistic today.

We can definitely learn a lot from the new 24” iMac and the M1 MacBook Air. Apple is definitely trying to reduce the amount the amount SKUs and custom options. We can also see that Apple has kept the base pricing the same. Last but not least, we can see that Apple uses chip binning to help keep the prices down for the base model.
Very good summary. If that's going to be the case and the 14" will have a 32GB option, I'm going for the base 14" and upgrade SSD and RAM to 2TB/32GB. I currently have the 5500M with 8GB and don't use it at all.

As for shipment, would the power outages in China have something to do with it? Or would that be not related to where the MacBook Pros are built?

NGL, pretty bummed if this doesn't come out on Oct. 12th. I'm still on my late-2016 MBP and I'm really dying to upgrade.

It won't. Monterey isn't ready. If the trends hold up, there will be 10 betas of Monterey, followed by 2 Release Candidates, then the Gold Master that gets seeded onto the new hardware, then the release of hardware and OS.

That trend has held up for Big Sur, Mojave, and Catalina, and High Sierra (Beta 10 was the Gold Master for High Sierra). Each one of those had the OS released along with new hardware around the same time, with roughly 1-2 weeks between the last public Beta and the first release candidate.

Right now we're on Beta 9, so there won't be an event without having a release candidate out first, or announced at the event. We'd still have one more Beta release first. They do not and will not rush those.

Believe me, I'm just as needing an upgrade, if not more; I'm surprised that my mid-2011 13" MBA hasn't needed a single bit of service and is still going strong (I'm posting on it). But with Intel going out the door next year, I'll need the upgrade.

I don't see it happening in October at all, and it has nothing to do with the port of Long Beach and the congestion there. Apple flies their hardware into the US. Case in point: the iPhone, and being able to track your phone's movement from being shipped from China all the way to your door, up to and including the actual plane it's on:

The same flight following can be used for your Macs as well.

I guess it depends on how Apple has improved the cores since the launch of the M1. Current estimates say the full 32 core GPU will be comparable to an Nvidia 3070m. So a binned 24 core could get us somewhere around a 3060m which would be a nice upgrade for current base model 2019 16" owners. Of course that's just an estimate based on the tech used in the M1 GU cores.

On the 14", current estimates say the full 16 core GPU will be comparable to the current mid range 2019 16" MacBook Pro with an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M. So a binned 12 core could bring performance comparable to the current base model 16" with an AMD Radeon Pro 5300M. Again just a guess but if that turns out true, that will be a very nice update from what the current 13" model has with its integrated GPU.

CPU power was already fantastic with the M1 so I expect Apple to spend a lot of time talking about the multicore performance and GPU performance of these chips. Who knows, maybe we will get some extra surprises like ray tracing capabilities.
I just rented a 16" I9/16Gb/5500M from eBay and it felt slow with maxed out resolution (custom, using ResX), an external monitor and many heavy tabs open. Do you think that my best bet is to buy 32GPU to be on the safe side?

The 32GPU option will mostly accelerate 3D graphics or other intensive calculations (video exports or conversions, AI, ...). Was it 3D that was slow?

If it was just while using macos, what do you compare it with?

No 3D, just heavy dash boards with real-time datasets. Trying to understand if it's a GPU or Processor limitation.

Sounds like the processor to me. All 2D (normal user interface) is normally a piece of cake for any GPU these days. Is the dashboard sluggish, or do you get delays/stuttering when dragging around a window?

Dropdowns are not instant and slightly sluggish when dragging a window or switching desktops. Wondering why if i9 has plenty of power?

Apple stopped doing "gold masters." I'm inclined to think that Apple would load a "release candidate" build on new hardware & then update it to the "general availability" build after. It seems this happened last fall with the new M1 MacBooks & Big Sur.

I'm still leaning towards an announcement on the 26th or 27th. That would fall in line with a 10th beta this week & then a release candidate the following week. The RC is loaded on the new hardware. Then a general availability of Monterey shortly thereafter with whatever delta in RC builds in tow.

What if.......

The invites come out tomorrow & the event is Monday October 18th? 🤔

Spitballing on a Sunday afternoon... pardon me. Carry on.
can't see it unfortunately..

apart from WWDC (starting on Mondays) I can't recall a h/w product event not being on a Tuesday in the last few years at least! (they've launched Apple TV+ on Monday 25th March 2019, the XS on Wednesday 12th Sept 2018, clearly avoiding the 11th)

I'm still thinking 26th is the only plausible date in October. I'd really be surprised if Apple would ever do an event on the same day as competitor (but do think they could send invites out on the 19th).

so my guess

invites on the 19th
event 26th
order from 29th
BTO orders shipping 1-2 weeks after

That's very strange in any case. Are you taxing your CPU? Check the activity monitor. Same for RAM. On my 16", those actions are very smooth (macos 11.4).
CPU was not taxed, RAM iswasswapping and catching, but nothing extreme, really weird - should have worked flawlessly

I think that guy who predicted 21st as the event date will probably turn out to be right. If that's the case, we should see invites go out this Thursday and have a nice 30th anniversary event on the 21st.

It definitely not going to be cheap to increase the ram, they’ve always charged a hefty price for mem bumps.

For the first time, the ram is built into the CPU, so they may or may not go with a hefty price bump. The fact that it is integrated means the bump may not be as high as previous intel models.
