I'm going to give the Resident Evil 1 REmake a try. The original GameCube version.

All you guys are sloughing through Bloodborne and I'm just here getting my ass handed to me on RE1, lol. On "easy" mode no less.. It's hard enough trying to take down regular zombies in this game. I've since read online that all the zombies I've managed to kill will come back after awhile as even stronger Crimson Head zombies, unless I find something to burn the corpses.
Great.
I guess I'll restart (again) as Jill (again, tried Jill then Chris but playing as him is supposed to be even harder) and I'll try running away from every zombie I see...
I don't remember having any problems with the original RE on PS1....

Fire Emblem Awakening.

So. Damn. Good.

I brought it on release then kind of forgot about it as I was bogged down with work. Dusted it off a couple of days ago when I realised my new 3DS was being seriously underused.

The story is progressing quickly though, hope I'm not anywhere near the end because I'm not done experimenting with different character pairings/classes.

I had to work most of the weekend, so only got a few hours in on Bloodborne. I managed to kill the first boss, the Cleric Beast, and explored all of upper Yharnam. Grinded a bit to level up and stock up on blood viles. Ready now to explore lower Yharnam and find the next boss.

This is a Souls game through and through. I love the convertible weapon (I went with the Axe). I have gotten used to lack of shield, but have not gotten used to the parry mechanic of the pistol yet. I've only successfully parryed-riptosed the lowliest of henchmen. I haven't figured out how to sneak attack backstab. I don't think it is R1 anymore, but R2 strong attack.

I think I prefer the Estus Flask mechanic to the blood vial mechanic. I can see farming/buying these a bit of pain down the road. On the other hand, you get 20 of them and enemies frequently drop them, so it could be easier to go long stretches without worrying about finding a bonfire which resets enemies. I HATE how enemies can pick up your blood echoes and you have to kill them to retrieve. It makes recovering lost souls way more difficult, as if this game weren't difficult enough already!

The scenery is beautiful, but it is a bit repetitive with coffins and barrels everywhere. While I'd much prefer a classic fantasy setting, I like this Victorian setting more than I thought I would. The layout of the town and level design seems every bit as good as Dark Souls. And yes, opening shortcuts is key.

Only downside is load screens are a bit long. They really should let you warp directly to any unlocked area, instead of first going to Hunters Dream, that would help. Sony said they are working on a patch to reduce load times. No noticeable bugs yet that I have seen. I've played mostly offline mode, but tried a little online mode just to see what sort of notes other players have dropped. I have not tried summoning anyone yet.

Difficulty through the first zone seems a bit harder than Dark Souls. I mean, you have to work your way through mobs of townsfolk in the first major zone. I think this design is purposeful to teach players to think strategically and to lure enemies, but also as an easy means to farm blood viles and bullets. Then shortly after you face up against two insanely difficult werewolves (unless you find the shortcut around them). I can see players new to Souls games give up in frustration, more so than Dark Souls.

My only problem is work is hectic now and don't have a lot of time to game. I honestly don't see myself getting very far between now and when Witcher 3 comes out, where I will drop BB and start playing that. Plus, while playing, I kept thinking about Bayonetta 2 (awesome game!). I'm about 2/3 through that, and really want to finish it. So don't be surprised if I put this game down until later. It's not out of frustration, I can hang with the difficulty, but Souls games demand serious time and commitment...

Finally got a chance to sit down and play Bloodborne for more than just a couple of minutes...

I told my younger brother to buy it and a PS4 today-I keep my PS3 just for Demon's Souls, and would be inclined to get a PS4 (if I was planning it sometime anyway) because of Bloodborne.

A tip for your brother. Amazon has a great Bloodborne PS4 bundle now. Get a PS4 with Last of Us, Bloodborne, and $20 gift card for $400:

I have to try and get out of the need to try and kill everything especially when I'm clearly outnumbered or up against something twice my size. Hopefully I get into the rythm of it at some point otherwise it'll be another game I only get to see 5% of.

What the hell with lack of checkpoints?

Seriously I got quite far after myriad of attempts in first part killing a few really big baddies and such, got to the sewers and died. Right back to start losing everything. I am already growing tired of this replaying same thing over and over and over. To me it isn't fun, it's becoming a work chore.

MRU, as some have said, open shortcuts. Also know that in Souls games, some areas are open that are not meant to be explored until you've leveled up some. I'd save the sewars until after you beat the first boss. Make sure to enter any boss fight with max 20 bullets, 20 blood vials, and 10 molotav cocktails. Use the blood echoes defeating the first boss to first upgrade your weapon to +1 at Hunter's Dream and level up your character. If you get really stuck, use a guide. There are plenty of faqs, written and video walkthroughs already available that can help.

I started Tomb Raider on PS4 this weekend. Great game so far, has a very Uncharted feel to it, just a little less light-hearted. My wife and I love looking for all the collectibles, totems, treasures, diaries and stuff. There's so much though, I think we're missing at least half of it! :D

Fire Emblem Awakening.

So. Damn. Good.

It's in my top 5 3DS games for sure, having an absolute blast with it. What mission are you up to? I think I'm coming to the end of the story - 50 hours in. But I'm really taking my time and doing those randomly generated battles. Honestly in love with how much content is in this one. It feels endless, what with the streetpass stuff and random battles. The DLC is well worth it too. There are some maps that I'm sure are impossible to complete!

But yeah do marry off as many people as you can. It's the virtual equivalent of a kid smashing two dolls together saying "NOW KISS", except the outcome is really good (kids are really valuable in that game!).

I grabbed Destiny for $20 for the 360 a couple weeks ago and am totally addicted. It's a great balance between a FPS and MMORPG.

Ya, I got it for ~5€ on Steam some weeks ago and it was really entertaining!

But, as I progressed (prolly past 80% through now) I've to say it gets also really repetitive. Too easy, way too much action (of the same kind) and way too few puzzles and tombs (!). But I'm coming from the first Tomb Raider game - so that may play a role. Not really keen on finishing it tbh.

Also because I'm occupied by RE Revelations 2 which takes all of my gaming time. Doesn't look half as good as TR but is the better game (imo, of course). Plus it has a good raid mode.

Thanks for this-I think it sealed the deal for him

re: Bloodborne-having loads of trouble killing Father Gascgoine (sp?). He's a tough one. Can get him down to 1/3 reliably, but then I get caught in a flurry of combos and die....again and again...

Took a first look at Demon's Souls tonight.

I really despise games that won't let me pause. What, just assume that life stops happening around me when I play video games??

Did the tutorial, then died and went to the Nexus. Pissed off some dude who was sitting there who now kills me repeatedly. Managed to run by him and activate the stone thingy which warped me to some castle. There, I just run around and kill anything that moves... Weird "messages" and blood stains everywhere, most of them pointless. Not seeing the point of that message system yet...

So far, it just feels like a hack'n'slash. I'm assuming it will have more depth later? Or will it just get more difficult...?

While I haven't played Demon's Souls (only Dark Souls and Bloodborne), Souls games are not hack n' slash, as pure button mashing will just get you killed and not get you very far in the game.

These games require skilled combat learning the enemies different attack patterns. Difficulty will ramp up with more depth as you progress.

I've really gotten spoiled on Souls combat. Once you appreciate what it takes to survive, it makes combat in other action RPGs like Skyrim pale in comparison.

I hear you!

Never really played RE all by myself - just watching at a friends place back in the day when I was a kid.

Started as Jill (she's got the bigger backpack, lol)... but this game is so damn scary! The more recent ones pale in comparison. That damn clock tick-tocking in the main hall unnerves me to no end...

Love it! :D

Hope they REmake the second one too since I never played that as well.

^ I need to grab that RE remake sometime. Looks really nice.

So, Bloodborne...have made quite a bit of progress in it over the last couple of days. Killed a few more bosses: Vicar Amelia, Rom the Vacuous Spider, Shadow of Yharnam (had a blast fighting this, which is three guys at once) and went through a whole new area, the Forbidden Forest.

Not to spoil anything story/lorewise but something happened and now the monsters seem stronger and there are more of them at once; at least in the area I am in now. I was told I needed to find someone now, so let's see where it goes...

Overall in terms of difficulty, I am finding the bosses of this game easier than Dark Souls and more on par with the bosses in Demon's Souls. The one that has taken me the most tries so far is Darkest Paarl but it is not even close to the likes of Ornstein & Smough, The Four Kings, Knight Artorias or Kamaleet in Dark Souls.

Picked up Bloodborne, Farcry 4 Gold and Tomb Raider DE a couple of days ago, finally played them last night. Out of the 3 it's Farcry 4 that's pulling me in! It's so ridiculous and vast.

I'm sure I'll get into Bloodborne... once I figure out how to get past that first enemy.

Killed that guy last night. Only took like 6 or so times until I figured it out...

What an amazing game!

Do it! Guess everybody played it already except me..

What I don't understand with all these kickstarter games banking on nostalgia: why aren't there any (tank controlled) horror games with fixed camera angles out there? So claustrophobic it isn't even funny. You could rather 'easily' render/produce beautiful set pieces and I'm quite sure the audience is there. Dagless, what do I miss? :D

FarCry4 is on my short list as well, but will wait till it gets discounted and / or I've finished a couple of games. Same goes for Dying Light. Have to get a controller for my pc so I can enjoy MK X - really wanting that one. + the upcoming Wolfenstein one.

Playing through Sunset Overdrive and it isnt drawing me in like I thought it would.

Dont get me wrong, the scenery is amazing and really like the unconventional things the game is doing but its constant fetch quest one after another with no big excitement going on within these.

Maybe it will pick up but Ive taken a 3 days break and not rushing to turn the XB1 back on to play it.

I'm only on Chapter 12, with 10 or so hours game time. Glad there is a lot more left! Trying to complete side missions as they come up too. I've made a few missteps though. I didn't level up Donnel so missed out. I destroyed Gaius instead of talking to him (figured that part out just in time to get Tharja thankfully). Also some decent pairings means going back to level up characters that have largely been ignored. I also rashly married Chrom to Sumia instead of Cordelia (or Olivia who is apparently a very good match).

Is there a particular chapter I need to keep in mind as a deadline for pairings?

I felt the same way about fetch quest, and ended up skipping most of the side missions because of this. Sacrificed collecting extra overcharge skipping additional missions, so couldn't unlock some of the cooler weapons, but still managed to beat the game. You can make up for this a bit by avoiding using fast travel and trying to kill as much as you can along the way to your next mission to collect more overcharge.

The game essentially breaks down missions into fetch quest, defend the base, infiltrate, chase, fight the boss, trick timed challenges, or a mix of all of the above. Some of the levels are really fun. What made the game enjoyable was the twisted humor, outrageous characters, art style, and play mechanic (once you get used to grinding/tricks).

I enjoyed the game overall. Stick with it a bit longer if you can.

Good feedback! I am really enjoying the look of the game and the city is beautiful. The humor is over the top which is funny and the actual mechanics are great. I am just boring of the same cycle as you mentioned above and need to mix it up a tad more and enjoy differently.

I just got to the part with the nerds dressed as ninjas or something so no clue how far in I am.

meh.. I'm not feeling the same way. The graphics are really good, for GameCube. It has a creepy atmosphere for sure. But I'm not really feeling scared.
More annoyed.
Annoyed at how many bullets it takes to kill one zombie. Running away from all confrontations isn't very fun.
Annoyed at the lack of inventory space. It would be better if I could drop the items and pick them up later when I actually needed them. But no you can't drop. You have to use up your items or find an item box to put them in. I can already see the large amounts of backtracking to item boxes becoming tedious.
The tank controls are tolerable but can be frustrating more often than not, especially when trying to run away from a zombie in a tight corridor rather than waste 10 precious pistol rounds on it...

I'm starting to think the only thing this game has going for it is the graphics. Maybe it's just been too long since I've played a classic RE game. I beat the original RE1 and RE2 years and years ago. Since then I've been through RE4, Dead Space, Dead Space 2, etc., all of which I found much more enjoyable. Dead Space 2 on Hard Core was an amazing experience!

This not so much..

I've taken all of them down except Rom the Vacuous Spider...this thing is unbelievable but I'll get him eventually. I've also noticed the scene has changed from afternoon sun to midnight moon so maybe the night has an effect on the enemies..and arcane/frenzy being used more by enemies. Last night I made two mistakes...I went to Cainhurst Castle and got my butt handed to be royally then went to the Nightmare realm and immediately turn my butt around...don't go to these areas unless you're leveled up.

I finally got some elemental effects on my +6 spare saw.

Bless

Well, different strokes and so on. Haven't played Dead Space, but I think RE4 is hardly comparable to the original first two. Having fixed camera angles vs free roaming is a totally different experience and I played RE4 a lot (on the Wii which was amazing with the motes-controller!!). Tank controls, although quite frustrating at times add to the claustrophobic atmosphere as well.

Dunno, it makes sense to me that Zombis don't go down after the first headshot. Why should they? I love the depiction of Zombis within RE much better than most I've seen in other games - very true to the original concept of being extremely slow but tough creepers. The later RE formular did change that concept and hence the gameplay drastically. Not a bad thing per se - but I'd love to see some games with the concept of the first iterations. The Evil Within et al don't do it that way. ZombiU on the WiiU was a goodie tho!

Do you remember Alone in the Dark back in the day (think there was a remake some years ago, haven't seen it so no comment)? I'd love to see more games like that - seems like they died out like the point and click Adventure genre. Now it's Action-Adventures everywhere with a litte bit of emphasis on this or a litte bit of emphasis on that, except that they're all actioney and wanna-be cinematic, but they all feel quite the same to me (see Tomb Raider for example as well) in general.

I'm not sure! I played up to Chapter 8 without knowing about the kids mechanic, so then I really worked for that. I'm onto Chapter 20 now and there doesn't seem to be a deadline, just don't miss or let any more characters die off ;)
