Just hung up...basically got the same answers. They got very confused with my order as well because I had a corporate discount. Upgrades are automatic and we will be getting an e-mail within 24 hours confirming the new config. No updates on shipping though.

FYI, I'm on hold too. I've been transferred once already. They're even more confused since my order price is $1999, so they can't wrap their heads around the fact that I ordered the higher end model and got the $500 ADC discount. Will report back once I get a satisfactory answer. :)

How did you get a $500 discount? I only get a $200 discount with my university discount. What gives?

read the press release!!!

"The $1,999 model now includes a 1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, up from the previously announced 1.67 GHz, and will begin shipping next week."

This is from the press release. So actually the lower end models ship next week and the higher end models ship this week.

Apple Developer Connection Select membership discount. The ADC Select membership costs $500/year and as one of the perks you get a hardware discount credit to use on one machine. The discount seems to be 20%, which worked out to $500 on the MBP I ordered. I'm told that the ADC Student membership also confers the same discount, only it's one hardware discount credit ever, and not once per year. The ADC Student membership only costs $100 though, so you could save $400 that way.

He's talking about the developer discount. You pay a membership fee, and then get a once a year $500 off new system option. For students, it's only $100 a year IIRC.

I also called. Confirmed: the upgrades are automatic. The rep told me that my ship date was pushed out to the 28th. Despite what people are saying about the 2.16Ghz option making the ship date earlier, she said adding the 2.16 CTO option would push my ship date back a month beyond the 28th.

I am thinking that Apple is not doing this out of the goodness of their heart. I think they are having some sort of severe parts shortages and therefore the MBPs will be slow coming. In order to avoid the negative backlash they are doing this free upgrade thing.

For anyone that thinks their MBP will ship tomorrow: they couldn't do this if they actually had any MBPs assembled (unless I'm wrong and this upgrade has been the plan all along). Otherwise they'd have a ton of 1.67Ghz MBPs sitting around that nobody can upgrade to (or a ton of 1.67Ghz core duo chips if they were swapped out).

Therefore they probably started assembling last night and have a few to ship out today.

It's a theory at least.

Of note in the press release, they say the 2.0 GHz machines start shipping this week and the 1.83 GHz next week. That does seem to indicate that none of the 1.67 machines had been built, or that they're going to be returning some 1.67 chips from previously built systems to Intel. Who knows, I guess we'll find out when the shipping notices start going out for the 2.0 GHz systems.

Of course this is just a theory as well, but I'm assuming they were planning this already and were already building them this way and just waited to tell us.

Ahhh, now I don't know what to do! I originally ordered a 1.83 MBP on 1/11, then cancelled, thinking Merom would be sooner than later, now that Merom's out of the question for a little while and the faster processors are out, I'm in quite a predicament.

On hold to find out if i can get the membership and apply this to my order. This would be nice but i have my doubts they will let me do this without canceling my order. Sigh...

Woot, I called and upgraded my Mac Book to 2.16Ghz- Also, the Apple Care representative told me that warranty replacements take priority in the shipment and build to order queue- so I should be getting my Mac Book any day now!!!

I really don't know what to tell you. I got an Intel iMac as a holdover machine. I figured it was a smart choice, it gives me the speed I want, and allows me to get thru the transition period without spending 3,000+. Honestly tho, there are going to be limitations to these notebooks w/ software issues when it comes to Rosetta. Of course at one point these limitations will be gone, but at that point there will be a Rev D MB Pro or so sporting Merom, 16X SD, who knows. My goal is to sink the $3000+ when I know its the best value for my money.

I jumped on the transitional bandwagon with the iMac, but only cause its less expensive, and so I can get a feel for these machines before going all in with a beautiful MB Pro!

Yeah, I doubt very much you will be able to as well, particularly since you have to place the order throught the ADC Hardware Purchase Program Store The good news is that the 20% applies to CTO options as well, so you can actually end up saving more than $400 if you want some upgrades.

I think you got quite the deal. Actually now i'm confused. You were being bumped off from a 12" powerbook to the lower end MB Pro, right? The 2.16 option isn't on the lower end model of the MB Pro.

well I gotta say, good on apple for this. Everyone was getting pretty antsy that their books hadn't shipped yet and now they get a free upgrade.

I have some info for the UK people. I just called Apple here and they say everyone is getting the automatic upgrades. However, if you want a 2.16GHz then you have to do a new order. Furthermore, they can't set the 2.16 in your order just yet as their system hasn't been changed over.

The guy said that they are due to get the update to their ordering system within the next 48 hours (probably tomorrow) and that he will call me back the moment they do so that I can place the order for the 2.16.

Sorry i read some discontinuity in your post. So if you want the 2.16 ordered TODAY you have to do a new order? But, if you wait til their system changes over you can place the 2.16 inside your current order?

Even exchange from a 17" 1.67 Ghz PowerBook with 2GB of RAM, I upgraded to 2.16Ghz and a 7200 RPM drive for a total cost to me of $400.

No sorry... you can't upgrade a current order to 2.16 today or anytime in the future. If you want a 2.16 you have to do a brand new order. That's what they told me anyway.

When the guy calls back I will ask again if I can upgrade my current order because I don't want to wait longer than I have to. But I doubt I'll be able to as two people I spoke to both told me that it'd have to be a new order (I talked to normal store then got put through to education store).
