Can't wait anymore!

My job ordered me a new MBP on 1/18, so I don't have an order number or tracking number - they've got it. I'm going nuts reading these posts. I have NO idea when to expect it. One day they're just going to bring it into my office! AAAHHH

Will the RAM i orderered for my original 1.83 macbook still work for the upgraded 2.0 macbook?

This is sort of off topic, I've just been reading this forum so far, but everyone mentioning their orders coming from China reminds me that my last iPod came from China, which surprised me because growing up in the early nineties, I always heard from the generation above me that Japan and the US made electronics that were high-tech and China made cheap pieces of plastic. Has this changed?

Does anyone have an idea of how much it would cost to make a MacBook Pro in the US? Does the US make anything? Did we ever? I know we ship a lot of raw materials to China, I'm not a smartie or anything, but doesn't that make us the less industrialized country? To ship raw goods and receive MacBook Pro's in return?

Dunno how much it would cost but basically we outsource the labor. Its cheaper to pay Asia to build things then to pay US laborers 5.15 an hr with benifits to do it.

But China is trying to bring in more R&D to their country. In fact, China looses several hundred thousand manufacturing jobs a year to places like Indonesia, and gains several hundred thousand more skilled jobs per year. It is a major step between developing county and developed country.

Also, China has a national healthcare system, which businesses and factories pay taxes to support, so that they don't have to provide healthcare themselves, which makes it even cheaper than here.

Woke up to a shipment notice in my email this morning. The FedEx tracking site shows that they actually have the package. Woot! :)

This is an interesting issue - a really good book on this is "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman. At one point he actually takes you through the making of a new laptop (a Dell :( ) as it is put together, how there are dozens of companies for the components and how it makes his way to him. All this happens in China! So the book is about the global supply chains and about how jobs move where skills and low wages combine.

Me too - my 2.0/7200rpm shipped on the 18th - although the tracking says it got to FedEx after their cutoff, and so probably won't actually move until Monday.

Yeahhh!! :D

Just got my shipping notification in the UK :D

Shipped today (10 days ahead of the last estimate of the 28th) with estimated delivery of the 24th.

CTO 2.0 with 120Gb drive

Sweet :)

Yeah, mine shows that they got it after the cutoff as well, so it'll take a few days, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Excited doesn't do justice to it. :D

I've seen this too... a lot. Part of me thinks it's a ploy by companies so they can say, "We ship everything in 2 business days" or whatever, when in reality, it didn't really get out in that time. It's kind of smart on their part, because they have an extra few hours to get that laptop manufactured. The same goes for when companies send FedEx a shipment notification and are like "Hey we have a package come pick it up." Well, if you're Apple, you can do that at 4:45PM on a Thursday, and you know it won't actually get picked up until Friday morning, well technically it has started the shipping process, but that factory has the rest of the night to get the job done.
