...This would tend to relate a problem with the machines, not "high demand." If demand was high, some machines would ship. My gut says its an issue with the batteries. It was something that when the machines were announced was still not really "hashed out" in the design; we never had an estimated run time out of them at release, and who knows what batteries the plugged in, pre-production machines had in them at macworld.

Wouldnt that be a trip. I'm _not_ saying this is true/believable/whatever. But having to revamp the MacBookPro would be a painful milestone in Apples history. I remember when my Powerbook 1.25 was delayed in shipping, it sucked - but things happen.

MacBook pro: The fastest mac laptop in the- *sleep light glows* Dang it!

I thought I recalled a post somewhere from macworld where someone unplugged the machine, and the battery life wasnt that great. Perhaps these machines were running Li-Ion batteries, where the production models have Li-Poly.

another note: the MBP extra battery has an estimated ship time of 6-8 weeks.

edit: I dont mean to say any sort of redesign is/was needed; I am just saying the particulars of the battery at the time of launch were not production-ready. It would only have an affect as to what is in that battery enclosure, not the machine.

I will be phoning first thing Monday to complain, not only about the multiple failed shipping, the failure to honour the promise they made to ship in February but also about the terrible service of sending an email saying that they are ignoring it.

If, when they call me on Monday, they tell me that mine is indeed delayed until late Feb or March then I will be complaining that...

1) On the 5th of Feb I was told there were no delays and that mine would indeed ship on the 7th.

2) On the 7th of Feb I was told mine was currently in manufacturing and that it would ship in the next day or two and definitely by the end of the week.

3) On the 10th of Feb I was told the order would not be shipped until late Feb or early March yet they had no idea why this was. They could not cite a single reason for the delay.

4) The emails say the delays are due to "high demand". I find this extremely unlikely because no units at all have shipped. If the delay is due to manufacturing difficulties (such as the battery) then these emails are quite simply lies.

It's probably not a lie, just what the automated system tells you as a standard message.

if a company of Apple's proportions had only this one standard message in their repertoire to inform customers of the whereabouts of their orders, this would be morally not much different from a lie.

How About quit da Mac

Hey... how about wait till 15th and if it isnt shipped we all cancel the orders together? Sony VAIO FE has identical hardware spec (or even better) with more gadgets like 8-in-1 card readers built-in and i'm really start thinking to get one....

how about Tiger iFoto SpotLite?

well i think i can use Picassa and Google Desktop Search...

and maybe keep going with my Win Server 03 (mst stable windows so far)

lets bring down apple together if it disappoints us... lol

If you could get OS X on a Sony or an Acer then I probably wouldn't buy the hardware from Apple. I've had loads of problems with deliveries and returns with them in the past.

My store said sooner

My local Apple store said they'll be in the store the end of February. So you lose a week or two if you wait to buy it in the store it seems.

I was in mine last week (boston, well actually cambridge) and they told me they would be in the store in 1.5 - 2 weeks. I asked if they had any to ogle until then and they said they would not.

Ahh, but companies don't have morals like individuals do. I think what is likely going on however is that the part of Apple that is actually responsible for when these ship aren't really connected to customers in any way except for a standard form, so there's no way of them letting us know why if they dont ship on the expected date. We'll see what happens on wednesday.

The thought had crossed my mind, but I bet the build quality and reliability won't come up to Apple's standards.

For the time being, I would prefer to run a Mac OS on a Mac. By the time I come to replace my MacBook Pro, who knows.

I personally think that the Customer Care Reps only get the same information that we get. Yes there is someone up there that has a better idea of when we are going to get our machines. If I do not get mine shipped on the 15th, I am going to go and try to get them to upgrade me to 2-3day shipping for free. But other than that I will have to wait. I am going to have to go out and rent a computer for my photo shoot then. That will suck but I can always write it off as a business expense :) Got to love having a CPA as a mother. Can get away with all that stuff. In the time that I am waiting on my computer, I plan to learn the art of zen. And if that does not work. I will just continue to hit the refresh button on my Apple Order Widget off my GF's computer.

Really?

Wake up and smell the coffee

I will take Sony's/Leveno's/Fujitsu Siemen's build quality over Apple's many times over

Cool!

I'm from the UK with a ship/delivery of 15th/22nd Feb for a 1.83, stock apart from the 7200 HDD, ordered 11th Jan through my Uni.

My debit card has been charged for the full amount of my order.

It's not actually showing on the full statement yet, but it has departed my account. AFAIK, in this country, by law, debit cards cannot be charged until goods are actually confirmed for transit.

Apple store still showing same dates.

Have a nice day!

Finally?

We'll see. I think the people with the 7th ship date had their money taken out and then restored.

Maybe, but this is a debit card and AFAIK when the money leaves, it's for real.

We can always hope. It wasn't just a hold? I know when I use my debit card, it will show full amount in my account, and then "Available" which is whatever my amount was minus what i've charged on my debit card.

Did they actually take the money or did they just allocate it? When you pay with a debit card the company puts a hold on the money for a period before they actually take it in order to ensure it will be there when they do ship.

I really question these people that claim they had Feb. 7 ship date. Post a screen capture of the emials from apple.
- U.S. law states as well that full amount of goods cannot be billed until actually shipped. (I think this is streched a bit all the time, though). I doubt a huge company as Apple risks violating this law due to possible law suites.
Therefor, any U.S. buyers have charge confimation? Sounds like the U.K. orders will be in transit from this last guys message.
-Ordered a 1.67, 1 Gig. on Jan. 10......my order still says shipped by Feb. 15....deliv. by 23rd.
-Rest assured that I will probably recieve my gem on Fri. :)
I am currently working off a compaq laptop and am lossing it with this thing.

I'm just extremely curious why people who ordered on Jan. 10 and had the feb. 7 date got pushed back to march and the people who ordered after them are first.

Geez... why would we be lying? One sec and I'll get the screens.

If you read the entire thread it will become clear to you that the people that had Feb 7 dates only got notified of the delay on or after that date. The interpretation is that Apple waits until the last moment before they tell you the shocking news. That is it will only hit us US people on Wednesday. Let's hope that something different is the case.

In particular let's also hope that this guy:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=360853&tstart=0

is either making his story up or does not have as reliable an information source as he thinks he does. It does seem somewhat fishy as other computers use the Core Duo's as well and seem not affected by supply shortages.
