Honestly, most people that prefer the Mini are absolutely in love with the form factor, regardless of how old it is. Touch ID still works great, the large bezels allow for comfortable holding at any angle, and it’s light enough to browse comfortably for hours at a time. It basically doesn’t work at all with iPadOS multitasking tools (too small), but what it does well it does extremely well. I would be wary of a form change just for the sake of change. The exterior dimensions can and should stay the same.

Slightly smaller bezels for larger text sounds great. Copy the new Air form? Sure, but it’s not really needed. The only thing about my current Mini 5 I really want that it doesn’t have is compatibility with the 2nd gen Pencil, as the 1st gen is pretty inferior in comparison. Everything else is still great.

No, most people don't love the old and outdated look with Touch ID, massive bezels and small display. Thats why I got rid of mine. The updated Mini 6 (if it ever comes) will be just like the difference between the SE 2020 and the 12 Mini. Larger and much better quality display with a bigger battery in a smaller and lighter package. Who wouldn't want that?

Yep. I love the size of the Mini 6 but I’m not a fan of the design at all. It’s soooo dated at this point.

To each their own. This is why choice is nice, I suppose - what bothers you doesn’t negatively affect my experience with it at all. So, I hope Apple puts out the device you’re looking for, and I can stick with what is working just fine.

I did explain why I thought it would be surprising for Apple to produce a Mini 6 this year that didn't have the current design.

The target market for the Mini needs the current form-factor. The general public market for a new designed Mini 6 is not large enough to financially justify producing it. There probably will be an update to the Mini 5 in 2022 and a 9" iPad that will have the newer Air/Pro design. This isn't a prediction just a calculated guess based on how the Mini is used and who buys them in significant numbers.

I would actually consider a mini as an additional iPad if they give it the pro treatment (with proportionally smaller bezels), in the same footprint.
Same here ? even though I probably don’t need it. ?

iPad mini pro A14x and the rest of the goodies from the pro line, would be one bad ass tablet ?

It wouldn’t be for sale if there were no takers, regardless how unfashionable some may think the old design is. The same applies to the iPhone SE quite successfully and that’s a much bigger market in phones compared to tablets.

I think there will definitely be issues created translating the current Air design language to the mini form factor, the wider side bezels along with any screen size bump would likely mean a wider/ shorter device, which might make it more difficult to palm in one hand, particularly with the square edge design. That's something unique lost from the current model.

The ONLY reason the iPhone SE is even a thing and sells is because people like cheap, that's it. Very few actually like the design and prefer it to modern designs. Make it the same price as the 12 Mini and it would maybe sell a few dozen lol

Others just want something with a home button. Or small. So much to “only reason” ;)
Again, make the SE 2020 the same prices as the 12 Mini and it wont sell a thing. It only sells because its dirt cheap for an iPhone...

You'd be hard pressed to prove such a claim. I have the 12 Pro Max, and the SE 2020... different devices for different needs... and I got the SE 2020 because it fit what I needed for a specific use... it had nothing to do with the cost...

Well the SE is hardly the same tech level as the mini hence they’re priced differently.

Not a problem in the real world though, it’s not as if there weren’t enough iPhones sold.

The Air 4 got a price increase to $599 so I'd expect a redesigned mini 6 would get a similar price bump to $499. I'd guess the mini 6 would have even lower demand compared to the iPhone 12 mini. ??‍♀️

And I'm betting there's a much, much bigger demand for the iPhone SE 2020 than an iPad mini 6.

Yes I’m one who prefers the mini form factor as is with large bezels and Touch ID. If I had an Apple Pencil 2 I’d probably want compatibility though. And I actually wouldn’t mind if the mini were smaller to more easily grasp with one hand.

I do make good use of multitasking on the mini though. Not split screen so much (occasionally I do find it useful), but I depend on Slide Over daily. I would use Picture in Picture more if the video did more of a split screen instead of overlay which I constantly have to move around because it obstructs things.

If apple make an iphone like this there would be no need for a mini tablet ;)

Apple will very likely make a foldable device eventually, and yes, it would cover the iPad Mini's form factor and use cases. But it's still years away and it would initially cost like $2000.

So I hope there's still a market for a couple more gens of redesigned iPad Mini. I love my M1 Air, and frankly it does it all, but you just can't beat the Mini for bedtime reading sessions or as a robust and cheap-ish yet capable travelling computer.

Not sure everyone is interested in carrying around an iPad mini folded in half in their pocket. My XS already feels like a brick. Now if they make a small phone that folds out to the size of a standard 6.1” phone, they have my attention. And they’ll get my iPad mini 6 purchase as well. Different uses and price points.

Give me an iPad Mini 6 with the Pro design (and similar specs), and I will buy it regardless of cost, to use alongside my 12.9 Pro.

BUT given the reports of the poor sales of the iPhone 12 Mini, I am getting more and more sceptical that Apple will want to spend R&D producing a new iPad Mini 6 for a similar niche market demographic.

Based on the Macrumors reports, there are 2 main factors that may have resulted in poor sales:

1) Covid lockdown, resulting in more people staying at home and hence wanting larger display screens
2) Price i.e continuing availability of lower-cost models like the $399 ‌‌iPhone SE‌‌, $499 iPhone XR, and $599 ‌iPhone 11‌.

The first point will be less of a factor over time, but price may still be a factor (especially against the iPad Air).

Regardless - make my dreams come true on the 23rd of March Apple!

The mini is small enough that the form factor doesn’t bother me. I’m happy to continue with my mini 5 for a few more years. The A12 has plenty of mileage left in it. It’s a good companion to my 11 inch pro and my 12 pro max.
