We're 100% sure that X cases will fit on the XS, right? Like, they didn't slightly move the buttons or anything?

Actually, there are 2 changes, the speaker and the back mic. For this reason some of the manufacturers are creating updated versions. I’d say all of us buying X cases may be doing so with some slight risk...but hopefully the impact is minimal or easy to resolve.

I keep seeing a lot of people mentioning the iPhone Leather Cases and they do look sharp but I have always been afraid to buy a case what doesn't enclose the whole and the leather case has the opening at the bottom near the charging port. I keep my phone in pretty good condition and upgrade every 2 years and only drop it a few times but never had any issues.

Has anyone dropped their phones near this open section and had issues?

Yeah I hear you. I boycotted apple cases with the lower opening since I dropped my iPhone 6 and it cracked nearly the earphone jack. At that time I was using the apple silicone case. And since I only use slim cases with 4 side protections.

Yup, I loved the leather cases but the open bottom just begs for trouble. I like the spigen case as it covers all edges and has a decent lip to keep the screen away from surfaces.

Nooo... sadly no... not only the speaker are different but also the camera! ( I just read that in another thread in the accessories section... https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/case-for-iphone-x-work-for-iphone-xs.2137556/#post-26498582 )
The camera is slightly longer now ( I think). From the photos I saw maybe 1-2mm so most cases need a new camera cutout...

I asked Spigen about compatibility of the Spigen neo Hybrid ( iPhone X version) and they said it won’t fit... :( needless to say I ordered it already and can’t cancel it anymore... I guess I just try to make it fit with a carpet knife....

I guess many out there will have cases on Friday that won’t fit...

Dropped my X in the leather case a few times without damage to the bottom. The exposed stainless steel is actually in great condition.

I prefer the open bottom, because of the swipe gestures.

The leather case is a beast, at least through about a year of use. Bottom corners of my case are cut up and scarred badly but the bottom of the phone has no wear. On the 8+ leather case I have now the bottom corners are really tearing up badly (combination of drops and regular usage I think), so it's good timing to move on. But it's seen a lot of action and it's performed in as heavy-duty fashion as I could hope for.

If you're coming from bulky cases like lifeproof or otterbox or something, it may not satisfy you. But I've always used Speck and Spigen and the like, and the leather case has far outperformed those for me.

If your cases tear up like that usually Apple will replace them for you. Have had a couple silicone cases break off in the corners and went to the apple store. They usually just grab a new case off the wall and hand it over. 1 year warranty.

I recieved my Otterbox Symmetry and am actually dissappointed in it. The new "slim" design they are claiming is accomplished by them removing the rubber that previous lined the back interior of the case from the design. So now, the back interior is entirely plastic, with rubber only around the frame of the phone. The buttons are also hard plastic that is inserted into the rubber, which feel like they may rattle or not be as precise and feel mushy instead of clicky. I think that the design change may make this less of a durable case since the back glass is not protected only by plastic. Once I get the phone I will have a better idea of how the case feels in actual use, but the first impression is not good, and I feel that this is no longer the best "slim" protective case for my $1250 device.

Just in case I end up not liking this case, I pre-ordered the Rhino Shield Solid Suit, which I have seen and heard good things about. It looks like this case still has rubber throughout on the inside, and despite users claiming it is slippery, I feel like it may offer better protection. Being able to change button colors is just an added bonus.

Where did you order this “slimmer” version from?

Directly from Otterbox. There’s no option for a slim version, that’s just what it is. The packaging has a sticker that says “new thin design”. It seems that for the 5.8” XS they are differentiating the thin design online and it has a new model number because they are still also selling the old design.

Looks like the inside design is how you can tell compared to old version. Amazon’s picture shows the new inside on the black one.

Have a clear ringke case and going back to a speck case. Haven’t used a speck case since the iPhone 5 days.

Yeah I would say that this is definitely the way to tell. I am probably going to return this one as I am worried about the hard plastic back against the glass back of the phone for drop protection. I feel like cases that have rubber on the interior would offer superior drop protection.

Just picked up the Cape Cod Blue case from Apple.

Thanks for sharing. The Cape Cod Blue looks much darker than the pics on the Apple Store. Is that the Blue Horizon Silicone XS case you have in comparison?

So far I’ve just ordered one of those Totallee thin cases for the XS, since they emailed me a 70% off code. Will probably pick up a nicer case soon.

Is peel case thinner than the totallee case??? Im confused.

Anyone got promo code? :D

Did you have the original symmetry? Was it actually thinner?
