the iphoneX had design thought out into it: 5.8" screen that could still be comfortably held and used (or at least just as comfortably as an iPhone 6).
What does the 6.1" iPhone 12 Pro have that the 6.1" iPhone 12 Max doesn't anyway? Better cameras and LIDAR? I doubt the average consumer cares overmuch about those.

I'm someone who has an X & is looking at a similarly sized iPhone 12 model that beats it in every area at the most affordable price. I'm also not interested in the rumoured "Pro" features of the same sized model.

I'm glad Apple has given us choice & not forced us to pick one of two models.

The only thing the non-pro 6.1" has going for it over the 6.1" Pro is the price. If you want a compact phone there's the 5.4", if you want big there's the 6.7" Pro, but if you are after a 6.1" model the only reason to choose the non-pro is if you can't afford the pro. So it makes sense to me that this would be the least popular model here.
Not just if you can’t afford it but if you have decided the Pro isn’t worth the extra money. I’m in that camp as I’m not comfortable paying £1049-99 for the 6.1” Pro even though I can legitimately afford to do so. It’s not always clear cut.

Funnily enough, I've skipped the 5.8" X, XS and 11 Pro for the past few years because none of those models were worth $1K to me and yet I'm willing to spend more than that total for the SE2 and 5.4" iPhone 12 this year (128-256GB models). Happily, the Walmart deal knocked off $200 from the SE2.

You would be getting the iPhone 12 max. That's the same size as your XR (but with flat sides instead of rounded edges) and a much, much better screen and camera system.
I’m pretty sad that Apple are finally consigning LCD screens to the history books. One of my main reasons for getting the XR is I preferred LCD over AMOLED, plus I have little interest in the extra features with the more expensive models. If it can do all the usuals plus take a decent snap then that’s all I require. I may hang on to my XR for another year then get the 11 as a replacement.

If I could get the 6.1” 12 Pro for £800 on a contract then I’d happily opt for that but the chances of that are slim. I know a couple of good friends who work within EE but I haven’t got the cheek to ask for their staff discount lol.

I think you are quite a common sort of consumer in regards to having paid out £1k for the X and have kept it longer due to the fact it cost much more initially. I’ve noticed carriers in the UK are pushing the Pro devices on 36 month contracts because it drives the monthly cost down and makes them more attractive. A lad I work with got the 11 Pro Max last year on an upgrade scheme for £70p/m and told me he was ok with that because he was paying £60p/m for his previous contract. I said to him when he first told me about it; ‘yeah but you have to get a data plan on top of that’ and his face dropped. He’s now paying £85p/m all in and this year is getting a non-pro model as he’s been furloughed for the last 6 months . It’s certainly turned into a rather expensive luxury.

I think you misread my post. I've never owned a X, XS or 11 Pro. I've actually stuck to the 4.7" iPhone 7 for the past 4 years because I wasn't very happy with Apple's upgrade offerings during that period.

Meanwhile, I'd likely spend more combined on the SE2 and 5.4" this year than the cost of an iPhone Pro.

Kind of feel bad for those upgrading to their first Face ID iPhone this year. With masks compulsory in many countries, people are going to miss out on using this great feature, or at least not make the most of it.

If they’re mostly at home then life is good.

I only wear masks in shops to be fair so it won’t really impact me. I’m sure if I need to open my phone whilst in the supermarket, I can use the passcode.

If I upgrade (I have the 11 Pro Max) I will get the biggest screen option. I think IOS 14 with picture in picture and widgets will be a lot better in the big screen options, so either the 6.1” 12 Max or the 6.7” Pro Max.

i‘m not sure I will update tho, my 11 Pro Max still has great battery and I’m not sure there will be anything to make me want to upgrade. I will probably update my Apple Watch tho from my Series 4.

Exactly. It’s why I’m going with the smaller 12, and then this new iPad Air. I have a home office and just don’t travel like I used to. And it will take years before the things I used to travel for return to any sort of normal.

I find 6.1 inch is the sweet spot myself. Anything larger is for me too much and anything smaller is like going back to a 3310. :)

Ah, good ol' 3310. That one was built like a tank. Can't remember how many times I dropped mine. Good battery life, too.

I prefer smaller phones myself but my brother really likes his 6.1" XR. That and the 6/6s/7/8/+ are the biggest that will fit in his jeans pockets (and not very comfortably at that) so he has no desire for a bigger iPhone.

An entire household having iPhones (or even all Apple) is pretty common though particularly if one values features such as Continuity, iMessage and Find My. There's no program but going all iPhones is a choice much like choosing to buy iOS over Android, or choosing the $699+ 11 over the $999+ 11 Pro (or vice versa).

While people may be able to afford to spend $4K on iPhones, why spend an extra $1K much when $3K will do? You can buy 1-3 iPads or Apple Watches with the money saved going the non-Pro iPhone route. Or maybe save the money towards a fancy vacation for when it's safe to travel again.

Apple products are not cheap but if Apple wants to keep a certain level of mass adoption, going $1K minimum on all iPhones is not the way to go about it. That's why Apple releases products such as the 6.1" iPhone XR and 11. I expect their accountants and marketing people have researched and analyzed that the $600-800 price range is where they can get max demand while keeping high profits.

MacRumors forum members are not the norm. Despite these poll results, I expect the 6.1" 12 Max will sell just fine in the mass market. Likely more in terms of units compared to the 6.1" 12 Pro but probably lower in terms of revenue owing to the cheaper price.

You yourself have mentioned not being willing to pay over $900 for a Pro 5.4. Why not? It's just another $100.

I've gottten a few iPhones with top storage so with that and 10-11% sales tax, I've already hit $900+ per iPhone a few times. Based on current rumors though, there's nothing in the Pro models that interest me so between ~$750-850 for the rumored 128GB 5.4" iPhone 12 or ~$1300 for a theoretical 256GB 5.4" iPhone 12 Pro, I'd rather save the $450-550.
Yea by their logic, since I can't afford to have a Porsche, I shouldn't even have any car. There's a thing called a budget where you figure out how much disposable income you have for whatever.

5G rollouts may happen quicker than you expect. I know here, where there isn’t a massive 5G map, the main provider says they’re now planning to cover over 80% of the country by mid 2021, so for many here, a 5G iPhone 12 will be a decent investment.
And once more 5G devices are bought, there is more pressure to have coverage. Someone has to start, or neither side will ever make a move to 5G.

I can just fit the 11PM with the Smart Battery case in my jeans, so there is probably no chance for the 12P 6.7 without major shrinkage or bezels and notch.

I will get the 5.4 the moment (the very second) it's available. Then the 6.7 dual sim from Hong Kong when it is available. I will have both

The 5.4 Hong Kong version will not have physical dual sim too?

I was thinking going smaller to 5.4, but after using ios 14 for a few weeks I will either just keep my 11 pro or get the 6.7 12 max, I see now why android phones have had big screens for so long. Widgets.
