Mighty Mouse..

I must agree about the keyboard. Absolutely top notch... using my microsoft one at work just isn't nearly as enjoyable as is used to be. :( The 'action' of Apple Keyboard is just so fast and crisp. I really can't say enough about it.

The Mighty Mouse was a different story though. I made a VERY quick purchase of a Logitech MX Revolution after the new imac arrived. I am very happy with that decision. The Mighty Mouse was just not cutting it.

I have the MX at work, and I'm not all that impressed. I know allot of people praise it on this forum, but for me it's just meh. I don't need 5 buttons, and 2 scrolls wheels. I kinda like the simplicity of the mac mouse. At least for now. I've read complaints about the nub on top getting all cruddy.. but will cross that bridge when I come to it.

I just got my iMac 24" and am really satisfied. I've never seen a more satisfying machine.

It's amazing! I recommend one for anyone that's interested. No problems at all -- period.

I understand what you mean. However, I find that the Revolution makes my work a lot faster. Setting the side buttons for Expose' and the top button for pulling up spotlight or quitting a program, really saves me a ton of time. I found the mighty mouse's squeeze feature hard to implement and that the mouse in general was not very "ergonomic". the Revolution fits to my hand a lot better, and I would recommend it to anyone who does a lot of multi-tasking.

Maybe the MX is particularly ergonomic for those with larger hands. I have large hands and have never used a mouse that felt better. Back in my PC days I used a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer that was a close second in terms of fit to my hand. But the MX blows it away in functionality, especially in Leopard. I program my buttons similarly to you. The free-scroll wheel is awesome.

Not to change the topic of this thread: I think I may have said it before but I am still loving my 24" aluminum iMac 6 months in. I had my LCD panel replaced because of a faint scratch on the first panel and the second one is even better luminance-wise. There are no gradients to speak of once it warms up.

It i not clear what you are asking. It is:

1) Does your imac have any problems? or,

2) You would have preferred some other Mac but Apple does not make it so you compromised and got the iMac.

Now that you mention it, the title of this thread is a bit of a loaded question. :p

Why does this thread keep popping up every other week?

I have been seeing this thread since shortly after these iMac were first available last August. Don't understand why people feel the need to ask this over and over again. While it seems as though there were some issues with a handful of people when these models were first available, Most people seem to be very pleased (myself included) with what they have gotten. I love this machine. No gradient issues, no heat issues, no noise issues, and now with 10.5.2 installed even speedier than it already was. I used to do Macintosh Support full time and currently do it as a consultant so I think I can speak with just a bit of authority on the subject. The people you hear from on these forums most of the time are the ones having the issues and are the most vocal. Then there are the handful of us happy users who kind of jump in every now and then to make sure there are things other than complaints on here. I happily count myself among that group.:D

Excuse me - a handful of people? I've read hundreds of complaints about this problem. And I got the machine *two days ago*, and it suffers from the gradient issue. I am very interested to find out whether the gradient thing on my machine is seen as within acceptable boundaries. Because it is clearly brighter on the left side of the screen. Applecare offered to give me a replacement, but from what I read, I gather I might get a screen that has the same problem or worse. That being said, the picture is very good all over, but tends to go a bit grey/yellow on the far right side. It is noticeable when you there is much white color on the screen.
And I repeat, I got the machine two days ago, not in August.

I was very happy with my 24" iMac until a week after I got it, I realized it had a very bad "backlight bleeding" problem on the lower left-hand side of the screen. I didn't notice it until I went to watch a movie and the screen went black. I called Apple and they sent me a replacement and also put $150 back on my credit card. I just received my new iMac today and there are no problems with it. I love it, the screen is huge... I couldn't ask for more.

It is excellent that you got a good machine in the end. But it's a about time Apple starts shipping the good machines in the first place. Seems that quality control is totally unknown to Apple these days. So many people receive bad displays initially (including me) and have to go through all the hassle before you finally get a good one.

I absolutely love my newly purchased 24" 2.4 C2D iMac, although I must admit I upgraded from a 20" 2.0 CD which was a great machine as well.

Only thing I can't get over is the keyboard, I find myself mistyping to often. I find the new wireless keyboard crippled without the number pad. Luckily, I still had my previous generation wireless.

I actually like the new WIRED keyboard. I also have a previous generation wireless keyboard and I am upset that the new wireless lack a number pad. I can see why some people would like it to be smaller for things like putting it in your lap... but I have never done that. I use it just like a regular desktop keyboard, it's just nice to have an extra USB port and also have less wires.

Well, my iMac was the 24" extreme model - which I promptly upgraded to 4GB.

It went back after 14 days because of a gradient/brightness issue. Funny thing is I saw it after I set it up, but thought it was my imagination - till I read about it here and tested for it. Anyhow, Apple gave me a replacement and the issue is much less pronounced. There's a *touch* of backlight bleed on the lower left but nothing really to complain about.

It never had a kernel panic, runs pretty hot too. I've been running Boinc with seti@home for about a month now pegging both cores at 100% and had zero issues with heat.

I really like this machine. I was really leery going to an iMac from a Powermac (DP800, which served me very well over 6 years). Now I need to to get one for my wife.

Oh a gripe? I hated the new mouse & keyboard. After a week, I got used to the keyboard and really have no opinion on it other than it's small and quiet. The mighty mouse was a constant pain in the ass and I tossed it aside and used my (now 6+ year-old) logitech optical mouse on it. My wife likes the keyboard and I got her one for her G5 iMac last week.

I guess I'm glad that either my eyes are too bad or I just have a good screen as I've not noticed any kind of gradient issue. I've had my iMac for about a month now and I love it! Mine doesn't seem to run particularly hot and cools off pretty quickly during sleep. So far so good...

The keyboard was a bit of an issue at first. It is a great keyboard, small but very well built. The key touch is a bit difficult to get used to. I'm a pretty good typist and it did take an adjustment--especially the space bar. But I don't seem to have as much trouble now with the spaces so I am evidently adapting.

The mouse was kind of an on-again, off-again, on-again love affair I suppose. I have a wired mouse and keyboard. I have read lots of bad things about the mouse--especially the durability of the tiny track ball. And it really didn't dawn on me that secondary button meant right-click:eek: I found a Razer pro 1.6 mouse that I though would be a nice change. But it really didn't fell as good in my hand and the scrolling ball seems hard to work to for me. I used it for 2 weeks. Then the other day I figured out what secondary button was  (what can I say, I'm an ex-Windows user) and now am glad to have the mighty mouse back. Hopefully, the tiny ball will last longer than those with the complaints!

Hi. I posted my experience from yesterday here..
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/437178/

Short story is I ordered a 24" iMac 2.8MHz, 2GB Ram, 1TB Harddrive off the UK Apple store website last week and it finally arrived yesterday. Set it up, switched it on and very loud clicking noise started coming from the back of the machine. Phoned Apple who are replacing but have to wait another 7-10 days before I get my new one! Doh! Wish I'd picked one up in the Apple Retail Store at Lakeside now when I bought an Apple TV!

Very happy, except it runs rather hot. But I took care of that with SMC, except now it's not very quiet :/

Six Month Ownership Review ....

Model: 24" 2.4Ghz Aluminum iMac

It saddens me to have to report the following ......

I LOVE MY IMAC !!!!! :D:D:D:D:D

I know the naysayers are out there just waiting for a bad report so they can feel justified in bashing the Aluminum iMac. I am sad to say you wont get that report from me! :D:D:D

I won't lie that I am a MacManiac and :apple: scores way higher than anything else but to be really honest I only had 2 issues with apple for quite some time.

First issue - 20" iMac - screen was faulty and I found out that apart from that it is also a 6bit so I replaced it for the 3.06

Second issue. ACD 23". I had to go thru 3 of them till I got my perfect one. ANd for real. It's perfect :D

As for my 3.06 wheeeeeew! What a joy :):D:apple:

on the fence

I don't own an iMac but I would like to get one, and these threads have scared the crap out of me! Why can't I just get the guts of an iMac in a box that doesn't come with a monitor? Just a little more oomph than a Mini, but not quite as expensive as a Pro.

I guess I will return to waiting for the expected Mini upgrade and hope for the best....

Then again, a refurb 20" aluminum unit for $949 isn't much more than a current gen Mini at $799 (for specs as close to the same as possible).

If you have an Apple store in your area, I would recommend buying one in person, even if you have to buy new pay a little more. Since it looks like my first two iMacs have been lemons, I'm glad I can just go down to the store and deal with my original salesperson rather than deal phone support and shipping. I really like the machine, I would just like it more if it didn't randomly shut down.

I just got my new 24"/2.8 stock w/2gb last week and it's great! None of the problems I've read about here. No dead or stuck pixels, no noises, fan or otherwise. The glass screen is no problem for me.

The screen was a little too bright when it arrived, but I made a custom gamma for it and now it's much better than the CRT it replaced. Also no noises or hums when turning down the brightness slider.

The monitor has a SLIGHT gradation, it's not perfect, but for the price it's better than fine. If you expect perfection in your monitor, grit your teeth and spend the $5000.

I know there are some legitimate complaints, but I have none at all. I wish all of my purchases were this satisfying.:D
