my 2010 13" mbp was probably about as thick as this thing is, and laughably nowhere near the performance as other than it being 11 years older, it ran a core 2 duo.

i'm irritated because it's thicker for no good reason. hdmi wasnt necessary, we already had many, many means of addressing usb-c to *anything else we wanted* for 5-6 years now. it's not even implemented in its most current and widespread form, making it obvious apple threw it in as the "here ya go, now ****", not because they genuinely wanted to put this back on.

absolute guarantee the next mbp form factor revision gets rid of it again. and i can't wait.
HDMI is great, just not when it's HDMI 2.0 for no reason.

I know that Apple lists the 14“ with 1.55cm on their website and the 13“ Pro with 1.56cm.

I know that Apple lists the 14“ with 1.55cm on their website and the 13“ Pro with 1.56cm. But all comparison videos on YT clearly show that the 14“ is way thicker than the old 13“ Pro.

I don‘t know how Apple measured the thickness values on their website but they didn‘t do it the same way for both machines.
I think its the feet. When flipped upside down the difference is less noticeable

Any more watts of battery and you can’t take it on a plane. 99.5 watts is the max they’ll allow.

Actually, airlines can allow up to 160w per the FAA Regulations:

Size limits: Lithium metal (non-rechargeable) batteries are limited to 2 grams of lithium per battery. Lithium ion (rechargeable) batteries are limited to a rating of 100 watt hours (Wh) per battery. These limits allow for nearly all types of lithium batteries used by the average person in their electronic devices. With airline approval, passengers may also carry up to two spare larger lithium ion batteries (101–160 Wh) or Lithium metal batteries (2-8 grams). This size covers the larger after-market extended-life laptop computer batteries and some larger batteries used in professional audio/visual equipment.

The key is airline approval so you'd need to check with them before flying. My guess is most do allow the larger battery size as that would mean a number of passengers would not be able to fly with them.
Mine arrived this afternoon. I booted it, installed Parallels and Windows 11 ARM, confirmed there is no possibility of USB to Serial connection through any form of adapter, and none of my Windows programs could communicare with any device.

I'm not sure what uo mean by USB-Serial (RS-232?); but I'm running Parallels /Win11ARM and when I plug in a USB drive it asks what I want to connect the device to - the Mac or Windows. If I select Windows the drive shows up just fine.

All I know the new Mac Book Pros are NOT aimed at gamers, it was aimed at picture and video professionals on the go! You millennials need to realize that most gaming is now done via steaming and consoles new streaming now too! So when steaming platforms target Mac OS M1 Max users then just fire up your console instead!

So in future the better gamers will have to have faster and faster Internet speeds! We a are fast coming to point in America where speeds at ISP need to be at least 3-4 times better than they are now!

I could understand starting a thread about returning the MBP if you had a genuine gripe like: design defect under high-load; drivers aren't supported; etc.

Things that have a genuine impact on your workload...but to complain that it looks too "clunky".

Some people obviously do not have enough things to keep them busy to worry about such issues...

I’m half certain it’s a shill thread anyway. These threads always pop up any new release, and I think it’s deliberate astroturfing.

These new MBPs are performance and power beasts! But they also look thick, clunky and bulbous. I've cancelled my 16 inch order because it is hard to spend thousands on a laptop with design cues from 2012. I may consider the 14 but even that looks bulbous. Anyone else considering cancelling/returning?
I saved up for over a year specifically for this computer. Could not WAIT to hit that 'buy' button. If I want thin and portable I'll grab my iPad Pro. That's what it's for. What I wanted was a machine which could run FCP without lag, lag, lag, and the deafening noise of fans gasping for breath. (On my MacPro 15). The 'beast' M1 MAX with 64gb I ordered on Oct 18th is going to beat FCP into submission... when it gets here... without breaking a sweat. I want ever ounce of power Apple can shove into that gorgeous machine , thank you very much, and if it's clunky... you'll hear no complaints from me. ?

In terms of footprint for traveling purposes, should be OK but for aesthetic purposes, it looks much chunkier. Who is going to use the laptop flipped upside down. I guess after some time, everyone will get used to it.

Dude, why do you assume it’s a shill thread? Why do you dismiss people who favor more balance between form/function?

Too bad they can't filter these threads...the signal to noise ratio on relevant content has gone way way down. Sadly.
There‘s a forum dedicated to MBPs and there you can find relevant content which all seem to be issues such as blooming/screen issues, Safari crashing and not working with higher refresh rates, wrist pain when typing on the 16, the chunk of the 16, etc.

Why are people upset that others are complaining about the design and form of these new MBPs? Let us speak and opine without harassment.

There’s a lot of concern about the weight of the 16" mode, which actually concerns me. If carrying something that weighs under 5 pounds burdens you, you might want to consider exercising a little bit. Maybe even do a little weight lifting.
I apologize if this offends anyone.
People keep saying this same phase... lol.. its NOT the weight, its the footprint, its simply HUGE, Huge when carrying it, huge in a back pack (if it will even fit) huge at Starbucks, HUGE on the plane (won't even fit on a tray), huge about everywywhere except home.

Not returning, but I did cancel my order after getting to play with a 14" MBP. The size was bigger than I had expected, which was no fault of the machine's - it was just a mismanaged expectation on my part. I never had any need for the horsepower - I just wanted one and excitedly pulled the trigger on the day of release. But now that I got my hands on one, I began to wonder why I'd haul around the extra size and weight over a 13" ultrabook if I didn't actually utilize the reason for the extra heft.

None of this is the MBP's fault - it's one hell of a piece of hardware. But when holding it I realized that what I really wanted was something like an 13" Air/XPS/Surface sized machine.

I mean... of course it is because its a 16" laptop. How was anyone surprised enough by the size, its the same footprint as the 16" Intelbook, to where they returned a big laptop when they knew they wanted a smaller laptop?

Still, returns mean more refurbs so someone will benefit from these dumb purchasing decisions.

I once used a 17" Apple Macbook for work/play. I loved it. You could easily get inside it to change the battery/RAM/HD. PS. It did come with a crane :p

These "I'm returning my new Apple "X" product posters always com across as Intel shills. They appear within a day of release and universally start exaggerating the silliest things. It's as if they didn't read or see anything about the product before they ordered and then it is "The sky is falling!".

I’ve been an Apple fan boy for years. Seriously, I think Apple rushed the release of these new MBPs. The notch is strange looking and apparently has some issues. The brightness of these screens are still 500 nits for SDR. The battery life is mediocre on the 14. There are ghosting and blooming issues. The 16 is a chunk and feels so heavy. I understand every new product will have its early issues but some of these issues that were flagged by others may be deal breakers.

Congratulations, your photo shows that a 16" laptop is a lot larger than a 13" laptop.

He is intentionally misleading in that video because he doesnt mention that menu bar items wrap around the notch. So all Apple has to do is add the same automatic notch-wrap that it has for menu bar items to status bar icons; it's a testing oversight and literarily a simple fix. I use Bartender to hide infrequently-used status bar icons so its literally a non-issue to me.
