The reviews released on Monday are from professional Apple shillers. They all had nothing critical to say. Absolute sheep.
Personally, I agree with you, but that is a reflection on them, not on the product. iJustine foaming at the mouth because it matches her current wardrobe doesn't mean it isn't a great product, technologically and ergonomically (if you match your needs to the hardware).

I do understand the worry about the thicker and heavier element to the new design. I am going to be travelling with my 16" and it's probably going to be somewhat of a pain to cart halfway around the world. But I made an informed decision based on much more important concerns than aesthetics alone. Luckily there are great alternatives to the Pro if the design isn't to your liking or won't fit your practical needs. The MBA is a beautiful machine and it's probably smart for the OP to head in that direction.

BTW there's no reason to ban the OP for not liking the design or even deciding to return it. Not everyone is an Apple cultist lol

What I see is a bunch of kids trying to find thought as to complain at the Mac Books Pro little notch! I guess you didn't like a 1080 camera to video chat with these days! Sure they could have gotten rid of the camera in your book!

The new 16" MacBook Pro is smaller and weighs less than my beloved 15" 2012 model. So I have no problems with the size and weight of the new one.

2012 15"

Height: 0.95 inch (2.41 cm)
Width: 14.35 inches (36.4 cm)
Depth: 9.82 inches (24.9 cm)
Weight: 5.6 pounds (2.56 kg)

2021 16"

Height 0.66 inch (1.68 cm)
Width: 14.01 inches (35.57 cm)
Depth: 9.77 inches (24.81 cm)
Weight (M1 Pro): 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)
Weight (M1 Max): 4.8 pounds (2.2 kg)

Oh thanks a lot - this was very interesting and reassuring especially as you are comparing a 15" model with a 16" and the 16" is both smaller and lighter lol

Size comparison on the 14":

- easy fit in my SFBags/Waterfield sleeve case left over from my 2015 13" MBP (perfect fit)
- tight but do-able fit in my SFB/WF sleeve case from my 2018 13" MBP.

So as far as big, clunky, whatever - that doesn't really match the facts. I'm sure it's heavier, but as a coincidence I no longer care. Before the pandemic I was carrying a 12" MB and then the 2018 13" MBP everywhere...but I'm 63 and I am never again going to be in the office more than one day a week - yeah, not everyone's use case, but it is my use case and at this point another quarter pound or half pound is a completely worthwhile tradeoff for the bigger display, smaller bezel and sizzling performance.

Not really. MBP 16" is half a pound heavier and looks chunkier than Lenovo Legion Slim 7 that fits a 3060 dGPU and two NVMe SSD slots for 16TB storage (currently available 8TB x 2). I prefer the centered keyboard/trackpad without numpad on the MBP though.

MBP 16” is still physically smaller than Slim 7, even though it has a bigger screen. It is also more powerful with much better battery life. So, I’d say the MBP is quite well-sized compared to the competition.

I see that argument quite often and I think it’s stupid. I‘t‘s just not that easy…

Many of us (like me) are professionals who earn their money using MacBooks and don’t like everything on these machines but don‘t think the Air is perfect either.

I am a software developer, I love the CPU performance of the M1 machines and I would totally appreciate the M1Pro for these reasons. I also love 14“ screens and do prefer them over 13“, especially when they are as great as the new MacBook Pro screens!

However, I don‘t care about GPU performance. I just don‘t need such a powerful GPU for my professional job. And I dont need ProRes stuff etc.

Most of the „heat“ that is produced by the M1Pro/M1Max chips comes from the GPU cores. Therefore they are fat as ****, require more battery and are heavier. And I don‘t want that. However, I want the great CPU cores and the great 14“ 120hz 500nits+ screen.

Oh, and the Air cannot drive 2 external display…

The new MacBook Pro is only for Video Professionals and overkill for everyone else. But that doesn‘t mean that the Air is sufficient for everybody else.
Wait, you don’t want a better GPU, but you do want 2 external displays? You don’t think the better GPU is what gives you that?

They gave you the M1Pro with the pro features you want and the Max with double the GPU cores which you don’t need.

MBP is quite a bit more powerful, so, this is not a good comparison.

Too soon to tell since there are very few native software to run to compare. For things that can run under Rosetta 2, 3060 40W plus AMD CPU averaging ~15W is about double the fps in CSGO and about same in Fortnite.

Offtopic much? Guess what, there are only 300 million of you out of a total of 8 billion people.
Eventually you will also learn to use the far more convenient metric system, like everyone else.....

My strong assumption: The reason for this is because of these new feet. They are far more pronounced, and when people place both models next to other on a table, those feet lift the new models by around 2mm in addition. Actually people should do this comparison with the models laying on their "back". And then make photos from a perfect 90° side angle.

Again, it's mostly an optical illusion. And a matter of perspective: For 2012-2015 Retina owners like me, those new models ain't too thick. The messed up 2016-2019 models were simply too thin. I never heard any complaints about the first Retina generation being too thick or too heavy, there was zero need to "(we) made them even thinner"
Maybe I read it wrong, but I think he was making a joke about the usual stereotype of Americans because of your intro “I want, I want, I want” critique. Or maybe I’ve just watched too much Monty Python.

Nope, the size of my 14" is not an issue, the screen is beautiful and I like the design. It's not THAT thick. Fortunately Apple make a laptop for people who value thinness and portability over everything (MacBook Air).

Anyway each to their own hey!

You’re comparing games? A Mac running, basically, emulation vs a Windows gaming laptop running DirectX?

Yes, in games, that gpu is faster, check out AnandTech cpu breakdown, they say as much. For anything else, MBP is quite a bit faster. There is a lot of software to compare - Blender, Cinema 4D, Photoshop, etc.

And, not only is it faster, it also has twice the battery life in a smaller (yes, smaller) physical size. And yes it weighs more.

And this is compared to one of the smaller PC gaming laptops. Usually, PC laptops are quite bigger at this performance tier, and still they lag behind these Macs.

So, as I said - compared to the competition and what they offer - these laptops are not huge. Not at all.

Can’t resist a wisecrack here about the size and weight. The old design wasn’t so elegant when accompanied by a dongle.

These new MBPs are performance and power beasts! But they also look thick, clunky and bulbous. I've cancelled my 16 inch order because it is hard to spend thousands on a laptop with design cues from 2012. I may consider the 14 but even that looks bulbous. Anyone else considering cancelling/returning?
Apple is really dumb. I mean, who the hell still uses SDXC card slot, crappy slow speeds and outdated hardware that will be obsolete. They might as well ha put a floppy drive. What a waste, I would have much rather that space be used to add a few more wats of battery.

Any more watts of battery and you can’t take it on a plane. 99.5 watts is the max they’ll allow.

Remove the ports and replace them by two usb-c slots? Maybe a small touchpad instead of the F-keys with flexible contents? ?

More battery life, especially on the 14 would have been amazing. The 14’s battery life is really inferior to the M1 13. Here’s a comparison of the M1 13 vs the 16 Pro. I’m drawn to the 16 because of its screen size and great battery life, but that would be very hard to travel with. Not sure if that would fit on your typical coach cabin food tray. I actually was not aware how heavy it is too. It’s a little under 5 pounds which is very heavy.

I actually don't like the entire black keyboard and wonder why the playful iMac colors are not available on the MacBook Pro or Air devices?

You don't need a high-end GPU for that. The cheapest 15" MBP 2016 with Radeon Pro 450 had only 40% of the GPU power of the M1, but it still supported four external 4k displays or two 5k displays. The M1 is constrained by external bandwidth rather than raw power, because it was designed for entry-level Macs.

I used a lot on my old MBP and am glad they brought it back. A liw profile adapter for micro SF and 256gbcard plus Carbon Copy Cloner/QRecall and I have an always there backup / version control with me.
