Completely agree sounds like you are probably not the target audience. Can’t wait for mine to show up
I see that argument quite often and I think it’s stupid. I‘t‘s just not that easy…

Many of us (like me) are professionals who earn their money using MacBooks and don’t like everything on these machines but don‘t think the Air is perfect either.

I am a software developer, I love the CPU performance of the M1 machines and I would totally appreciate the M1Pro for these reasons. I also love 14“ screens and do prefer them over 13“, especially when they are as great as the new MacBook Pro screens!

However, I don‘t care about GPU performance. I just don‘t need such a powerful GPU for my professional job. And I dont need ProRes stuff etc.

Most of the „heat“ that is produced by the M1Pro/M1Max chips comes from the GPU cores. Therefore they are fat as ****, require more battery and are heavier. And I don‘t want that. However, I want the great CPU cores and the great 14“ 120hz 500nits+ screen.

Oh, and the Air cannot drive 2 external display…

The new MacBook Pro is only for Video Professionals and overkill for everyone else. But that doesn‘t mean that the Air is sufficient for everybody else.

The air is nice and very capable, just don't like the screen and lack of color saturation and brightness, I am not of the opinion at all, the new macs are for "creatives" there are plenty of professionals who need power too (doctors, lawyers, professors, etc).

well not, not for us who hate using dongles! lol
While I am not a dongle hater, if you are docking your machine a dongle would be nicer for everyone I would have thought. Just one cable to plug in and all your peripherals, power and monitors are connected.

Yeah, just me, me, me. I want this, I need that, why didn't they do it how I wanted? Apple can't cater to everyone. I think they delivered a great overall package and the 14" M1 Pro will be perfectly fine for you. It is NOT fat, how often shall I remember people to compare the specs again? It's even thinner than the previous 13" Pro and has the same 1.6kg weight as the 2013-2015 Retina 13" Pro. Which is perfectly fine for such a powerful Notebook, the same goes for the 16.2" with just slightly above 2kg. The Dell XPS 17" weights 2.5kg by comparison.

The new MacBook Pro is only for Video Professionals and overkill for everyone else.
Nonsense again.

I return my Mbp 16 m1 max from my online shopping cart. I just realized it is too much for my need and budget.

Well I got my 16" M1M today with 64GB/4TB.. I managed to scoop one up "locally" - so canceled my preorder with 9-16 Nov delivery.

I'm upgrading because I simply cant use the MBP 16" with TouchBar. My middle fingers keeps hitting it when I touch-type. Despite having disabled most of the "middle" space on the TB it still happens occasionally - and then the function keys are "missing"

When the machines are "next" to each-other - neither looks clunky. The M1M is 2 mm taller (ish) on its feet - and screen is slightly thicker as well. But the screen seems a lot more clear.

So for me it is a keeper. Most of what I do is photo/movie and SW development - so the performance seems great so far. I don't give a hoot about games performance. I have a few Windows app's I would like to run but nothing more important than I can boot up an old ThinkPad to do those things.

But so far the best thing is - the M1M is SO SO quiet! With the 16" Retina @ or > 10% CPU usage - I can hear the fan. So far I have not heard the fan on the M1M despite pushing 30-40% so far.

My 2010 15" MBP was my all time favorite laptop. Great keyboard. Wonderful screen. Fantastic battery life. And ports, lots of them. Of course, it was thick and heavy, but I couldn't give a rat's butt about that. I used it to pay my way though life with my writing business, and for that, it excelled. So I'm hoping the 2021 MB Pro will be the reincarnation of my old 2010. Apple took my money two weeks ago, so I'll soon find out. Bring on the new MBP!!

As an obviously intelligent individual, didn't you consider the weight and dimensions before you pressed that last button on your order? How do you get yourself to the point of spending a large sum of money without considering these obvious metrics?
This isn't a large sum of money really. I bought it and waited for the reviews

I actually also miss the Touchbar since there's no longer a key for the launchpad and I've gotten used to having a function button for locking my computer ?
I use four finger gestures for mission control and launchpad so it’s literally been years since I’ve used those keys to access them. You should be able to reassign a key to lock the computer, but I launch the screensaver which requires a password to stop instead.

These new MBPs are performance and power beasts! But they also look thick, clunky and bulbous. I've cancelled my 16 inch order because it is hard to spend thousands on a laptop with design cues from 2012. I may consider the 14 but even that looks bulbous. Anyone else considering cancelling/returning?
I love the smell of posting for attention in the morning.

I think the biggest takeaway for me from these forums over the last week is that if a non-tapered form-factor is enough to cause you to return the MBP, then you are likely not the intended audience (who value and utilize the additions the non-tapered form allow for) and may fare better with a MBA. No shade lol just truth!
They want fashion accessories not functional tools.

Actually that's quite an accurate description (minus the fat as f***). They are chunky boiz though.
But I'll be happy if you let us know about the "nonsense" more specifically.

The 16" is smaller than my wife's 2013 15" MBP, and smaller than most PC laptops. I'll be fine.

Not a chance. Not at gunpoint. I cannot WAIT (7 more days!) for a return to functional port arrays, no dongles, and blistering speed. It looks wonderful and the new 14" weighs 3.5 lbs, half a pound less than the 2016 Touch Bar 15" it replaces, and even $200 cheaper with twice the RAM and a 10/24 core M1 Max.

I know that Apple lists the 14“ with 1.55cm on their website and the 13“ Pro with 1.56cm.

I know that Apple lists the 14“ with 1.55cm on their website and the 13“ Pro with 1.56cm. But all comparison videos on YT clearly show that the 14“ is way thicker than the old 13“ Pro.

I don‘t know how Apple measured the thickness values on their website but they didn‘t do it the same way for both machines.

Same here. I traveled a lot pre-Rona as well and weight is important. I don't like back packs so it's a Tom Bihn shoulder bag for me.

I have an iPad Pro which is great as a mobile device and second screen when traveling. I bought an M1 Air and really like it but man the 14" that came today is really nice. Only reason it goes back is because I want more cores.
Yet again, someone buying and returning these things like it's a lending library. On every level, morally, environmentally, intellectually, and economically it is just wrong. There are dozens of websites (not least Apple's own!) that show you pictures, give you the specs, talk you through what all these specs actually mean.... Is it so hard to do a bit of research and then think about it, rather than buying on impulse?
I mean, muppet thought it is, I've measured across on my iMac to see exactly the difference between 14.2 and 16.2 inches and what you can fit into them. I've even got a can or two from the cupboard to recreate that extra weight to help me decide what I want! Stupid and embarrassing to reveal this to the world, but much smarter than messing apple and other customers wanting an in demand product, around.

Each to their own. You can still use a dongle on your new machine to plug in just one cable and have everything there. Or you can have different cables. It's YOUR choice. That's a nice thing. I guess.
