I think I'm going to order a 13" midnight 16/1tb. what are you getting 32 gb of ram for? i'm curious
FWIW, I went with 16GB on my M1 because 1) for most users who are just doing some light emailing, surfing, etc., the base 8GB was plenty, but since I do some Lightroom (not professional) and I like to have plenty of browser tabs open, the extra RAM made sense, and 2) $200 (or whatever it was) over the 3 years (or however long I anticipate keeping the machine), is really not that much.
I was actually a little surprised that the base is now 16GB. I have looked to see how much impact Apple Intelligence pushes and so far it seems to be totally inconsequential. Although, the actual implementation of Apple Intelligence
also seems to be totally inconsequential so far. All the same, I occasionally run into memory pressure into the yellow but nothing to do with Apple Intelligence, it seems. It doesn't concern me, because the more memory you have the more you should use. But going forwards I also want to also do some light LLM stuff, and I know Apple Intelligence will at some point be a slight burden as additional features continue to roll out so I went with 24GB.
And I have not installed LLMs on my M1 yet, but my M1 still runs great. For general use I would absolutely not be upgrading if I wasn't having my employer subsidize it. I just happen to get some money from work I need to spend or lose, so an upgrade makes some sense from that perspective.
Based on what I've seen so far, 16GB seems like almost overkill for those who are just doing simple or routine stuff. The 16GB M4 is a lot of horsepower from the processor and a lot of headroom from the RAM, for most people. And Apple is not cheap, so yes, that
should be the case. I think it's a good move from Apple, and I think it is a good move from a technology perspective too. I'm going to step up from the base 16GB all the same, just in case, and because of the light LLM stuff I plan to do.
