I think I'm going to order a 13" midnight 16/1tb. what are you getting 32 gb of ram for? i'm curious

FWIW, I went with 16GB on my M1 because 1) for most users who are just doing some light emailing, surfing, etc., the base 8GB was plenty, but since I do some Lightroom (not professional) and I like to have plenty of browser tabs open, the extra RAM made sense, and 2) $200 (or whatever it was) over the 3 years (or however long I anticipate keeping the machine), is really not that much.

I was actually a little surprised that the base is now 16GB. I have looked to see how much impact Apple Intelligence pushes and so far it seems to be totally inconsequential. Although, the actual implementation of Apple Intelligence also seems to be totally inconsequential so far. All the same, I occasionally run into memory pressure into the yellow but nothing to do with Apple Intelligence, it seems. It doesn't concern me, because the more memory you have the more you should use. But going forwards I also want to also do some light LLM stuff, and I know Apple Intelligence will at some point be a slight burden as additional features continue to roll out so I went with 24GB.

And I have not installed LLMs on my M1 yet, but my M1 still runs great. For general use I would absolutely not be upgrading if I wasn't having my employer subsidize it. I just happen to get some money from work I need to spend or lose, so an upgrade makes some sense from that perspective.

Based on what I've seen so far, 16GB seems like almost overkill for those who are just doing simple or routine stuff. The 16GB M4 is a lot of horsepower from the processor and a lot of headroom from the RAM, for most people. And Apple is not cheap, so yes, that should be the case. I think it's a good move from Apple, and I think it is a good move from a technology perspective too. I'm going to step up from the base 16GB all the same, just in case, and because of the light LLM stuff I plan to do.

Why not MacBook Pro I am curious!
Do you just sit on the Air threads and tell people to get a Pro all the time? Every time someone says something about higher specs on an Air it's "get a pro" from you. Every thread in the Air area, people are talking specs and bouncing ideas off each other.... and here you are "why not get a Pro?", "Get a Pro", or others.
  1. Not everyone wants a Pro
  2. Not everyone needs a Pro
  3. If you're not buying that person a Pro... or even giving them the difference... let they buy what they are happy with.
  4. I am glad you're happy with your Pro, but let people talk about Air specs without you butting in and say "get a Pro"
  5. It's not helpful to people who really want an Air.
I pretty sure an Air will be fine for me, especially I will probably replace it again in 4 years. $400 plus extra every 4 years I don't think is worth it to me... and obvious others feel the same. I cannot stand the mentality " I have (insert item), so everyone else needs too have it".

I use to be the type to get the best whatever is out there, now... as long it works... I'm fine.

I am typing this on my 2020 Intel MBP running Excel, Windows, Outlook, Teams, Apple TV (watching a movie), running 2 external monitors. My fan isn't running, it's still kicking, this is why I am on the fence even getting a new computer, do I really need it?

I’m not going to pre order as I don’t think there’s a need to in terms of I’ll likely only be getting the base model, and I think you’ll easily be able to have next day delivery or in store pick up at any point on them

But I also want to go have a look at the colours again in person, and I’m torn between a 13 or 15.

I never go out the house with it, so portability might not matter as much to me. And getting a 15 would make it feel like even more of an upgrade

Currently have a 2019 13” MBP which runs fine so I don’t actually need a new MacBook (also I like the touchbar and would love it to still be an option) and the size is perfect (14 would be the sweet spot though)

But I want to upgrade so I can sell that and still get a decent amount of money for it. Also the jump from Intel to M4 would be great. I do only use it (and rarely at that) for web browsing though pretty much and the odd document typing.

So I’m holding out to 1, see them in person. And 2, see if the urge/want to inpulse by passes.

Ideally I’m thinking of holding out till June if possible and getting the back to school promo that usually runs

pre-ordered the 13", bumped to the 10 core GPU, 512gb disk, and 24gb on the RAM.

This'll replace my 2020 Intel air, I suspect Apple will drop Intel support this year and decided it was time.

Even if they don't drop intel this year this'll be a nice upgrade.

The 2020 didnt quite last me as long as my 2012 that I used for 8 years, but 5 is still respectable. I'll prob toss linux on the 2020 and use it to replace the 2012 in turn which I currently have hooked up to my 3d printer as a pre-print workstation.

Well I am gonna wait until they are in stores so I can see if the blue 15 inch is for me. My trade in is an early 2015 MBP 13 inch in mint condition and they have an additional value for it until April 2. I think it’s time for an upgrade!

I won’t preorder - but I will swap out my 15” M2 for either the base 13” or 15”. Likely the 13”. It will cost me about $300 net. After having a many iterations of Apple silicon laptops, I figured out I use the smaller ones more. The lower price will get me into a machine I will use for the next few years at a small loss. I need to look at the baby blue as well (I could go with starlight, blue or silver)

Not upgrading my M3 MBA as it does more than what I need in a laptop

But very keen to see what the new sky blue looks like in person. Whoever ordered that please post pics! Looks lighter than 13PM Sierra Blue and grey/silver in some pics I’ve seen so far.

Your fellow forum members count on you for launch day pictures and first impressions. If you can't find it in yourself to continue embracing your forum role, you will leave me no choice but to report your post to the mods and let the Apple chips fall where they may.

When my wife needed a new laptop, I tried to steer her towards the base model M4 Pro. We went to the store and she tried out both and still chose the M3 Air. I know it's hard for some people to believe (not you specifically), but sometimes people just like the Air better.
What does she use it for? I’m on the fence and I really like the Air. I have a 2020 Intel MBP and over all, it’s still kicking.

She is a teacher and uses it to make classroom lesson plans, etc. She's also back in school for her Masters degree so she can be a principal and uses it for all her online classes. A few home movies, and email are the other main things. She came from a 2019 MacBook Air and really likes it. I'd say she is the perfect stereotypical "average home user" that the Air is targeted for.

On a side note, Mr. Heckles was awesome! "You owe me a cat.." 🤣

Thanks! After I made my snarky post to someone, my fan in my old Pro did kick on when I was screen searching on Teams, but it didn’t last long. I’m still leaning towards the Air. I feel like a Pro would be overkill for me.
I also find myself carrying it around more than I use too, so the lighter Air would be nice.

He was probably my favorite character, my wife says I’m turning into him 😂

I’m replacing my 13” 2018 MBA 8/256 with the 13” M4 MBA 24/512. I’m pretty sure I’ll notice the improvement 😁

The weight difference, although small, was another reason she liked the Air over the Pro. She carries it with her in a laptop sleeve stuffed in one of those oversized Coach bags daily. That bag has a lot of stuff in it, so I guess saving weight wherever possible was important enough to her.
