I’ve given an ultimatum to my friends. Either use iMessage or don’t bother. Then I deleted WhatsApp.
My husband uses the note 8 and I can’t get him to use an iPhone so we have to carry on with what’sapp. I’m definitely not using google maps anymore though after the latest scandal especially when Apple maps is good enough.

I tried that but nooo they still use WattsApp..
Pain in the you know what.. I think once it starts getting adverts as is rumoured it’ll be fine and forgotten, it’ll be use iMessage or nothing!
If it gets adds then I’m deleting it and my husband had better get an iphone!!

For me Safari is a buggy, despite its supposed memory leaks and that the phones RAM limits how many tabs you can have open, plus the obtusely annoying habit of reloading webpages for no reason every time you go back into them..

Safari is still the best mobile browsing experience I’ve had, and that includes the five Android devices I’ve had.
Plus I like the less cluttered look if iOS and that it’s boring, because it’s then easy to use.

iOS 11 has rrreeeaaaalllllyyyyyyy tested my patience with the iPhone and especially my iPad Pro, but I am still sticking with iOS.
Oh and I find iOS apps to work better and smoother. I also had a Note 5 but wasn’t able to setup the home screen how I wanted as some widgets wouldn’t adjust to the resolution correctly.

Another thing with iOS is that the new versions work on older phones for a long time.

I would of also added iMessage but other iPhone users I text seem to insist on using WattsApp, which is just infuriating as I much prefer iMessage, and it’s also not owned by Zuckerberg...
Don’t really like chrome. The samsung browser is alright but safari is the best mobile browser I’ve used by far. I use it on my iphone, iPad and MacBook. I even had safari as the default browser when I used windows.

Just curious.
iOS is developed in close protective environment, exclusive to Apple. Android operating systems are developed in unprotected environments - can be developed by anyone and extremely vulnerable to cyber security risks. Whenever you go to any cyber fraud and security conferences, cyber security experts would advise attendees to steer away from android devices.

I just take my surface pro, so I can watch tv and really do some stuff. And I don’t need cables, keyboard or extra monitors with a pretend operating system.

I don't need a keyboard/mouse but prefer it. The phone acts like the keyboard/mouse for me if needed.

Right, but my point is, I got real windows, real browser, real office and can do up to the capabilities of the surface pro without compromise in an easy to use form factor with the keyboard cover. To me that beats a half-baked solution like Dex.

But that is me and one should use what they want, need and require.

Because the Gap between iOS and Android seems to be smaller and smaller. I don't see much that I miss that Android has, that iOS does not.

Android/galaxy still has been many more features over iOS and the list is growing not reducing.

People want the features that they want, no more, no less. Extra features the vast majority of people don’t use isn’t a positive thing, it’s a waste. Samsung would be wise to spend their time developing their own OS and ecosystem to break their reliance on Google that’s holding them back from competing with Apple rather than adding extra features people don’t want.

I don’t buy Samsung because it doesn’t have enough features, I don’t buy Samsung because they use Android on their devices.

Besides the bugs in iOS 11, I've always preferred iOS over Android simply for the simplicity of the design and how easy it is to use. Essentially iOS 6 works the same as iOS 12 (yes I realise there are some changes) but the base OS works in the same way. As for Android, I don't understand how they work as they've updated it so much and every company has a slightly different spin on how they want you to use it.

Plus with iOS I enjoy having years of support (this might be an Apple thing instead of an iOS thing) but I love how my 5 year old iPhone 6 Plus can still get the newest operating system version, where as Google stops android updates on certain devices after like 2-3 years.

Android also lacks a compelling desktop/laptop OS, tablet and smartwatch. All of which Apple does supply.

I wanted to include that but didn't know if it was going more into the Apple Vs Google type debate.

It’s impossible to look at as just iOS and Android in isolation as there’s a much broader ecosystem outside of that that will determine which OS you own.

There’s precisely zero point in me buying an Android Phone because a) it’s google, so no, and b) why would I deliberately hamper the ecosystem experience by getting a phone that doesn’t fit into it?

That doesn’t necessarily suggest either is more appealing over the other though as each user has very different needs and preferences.

When Android and iOS are compared side by side it’s clear they both fulfil all the standard everyday tasks that the average consumer needs. This is why both are successful and all it boils down to is preference over the interface.

I like them both to be honest, but iOs just feels a little slicker and the apps are generally better than their android equivalents in my opinion (especially for the iPad, there just isn't an android tablet that can compete with the iPad). The gap is close, though, and I don't understand the mentality of people who stick with just one and hate on the other.

I recently bought an Honor 10 because I'd been all Apple for a while and while it was £359 it comes pretty close to what my iPhone 8 can do. Android has gotten better at the design and build quality of some of its devices, too. In fairness, I hardly use the 8 since I got my X. But as a main phone I wouldn't use the Honor over the X. I'm just too comfy with iOs.

I haven't been well this year and have had several spells in hospital. I tried out both the X and the Honor 10 during my stays (the hospital had no wi-fi) and preferred the X - apps were that bit quicker and smoother to use although the Honor is quite well specced for an android device.

If you are using this loose criterion, then a $100 Android fulfills the same needs as a $1000 iPhone. Is this what you are saying?

Well of course it does. What does the average user really use their smartphone for?
Phone, text, email, social media, YouTube, camera etc. This is where personal preference comes into play and consumers will decide what platform they prefer, what their budget is, what phone they think is cool and so forth.

You seem to be convinced the phone you’ve chosen and android as an operating system is the outright best for everybody and those who don’t agree are either in denial or too thick to see it. That’s naive in my opinion to the fact both platforms have pros and cons that appeal to different people.

Nope.

Why are you even here debating if you are just looking at lowest common denominator? It is like saying a Porsche and a Toyota is the same because they both take you from point a to b.

I'm debating from the angle of merit of a Porsche against Toyota or a Ferrari. How these cars stacked up against each other. And yes, many buyers may not use the full capabilities of these cars at all but that's not the main deciding factor...if it were then nobody would have bother to build a Porsche or a ferrari in the first place.

What you are trying to compare seems to change depending on what point others make. One minute it’s straight up Android vs iOS, then it’s a combination of that with different devices added to compare hardware too. If you are just comparing the OS then pretty much every smartphone on the market is capable of achieving the basic demands of the everyday user.

At the high end of the market the flagships are all close in capability. They are all fast, have stunning cameras, screens and are beautifully crafted pieces of product design. We all have different views on what is the best package for us and for me it’s the combination of iOS and the iPhone. Others like yourself have different needs and priorities but personally I don’t care what others use as long as they enjoy it. I have never needed to convince anybody my choices are better in order to feel good about what I’ve bought.

Unfortunately threads like this go beyond discussing the merits of different devices and evolve into tit for tat bickering over finer details that not everybody really considers or cares about.

I have used every OS that was and still is out there and I now pretty much stick to an IPhone. It just works out of the box without much tinkering (I’m not much into customization.). Security is the overriding consideration for me and I will pay for hardware from a company that makes it’s money from the hardware and not from ME as a product. Every time I have tried the latest android, I have to alllow Google to track everything I do just to use Google’s voice assistant and I just couldn’t stomach that. I have nearly every tracking thing turned off on my iPhone and I can still use Siri for mostly everything I need. I haven’t seen it mentioned but I like that there’s an option to let a particular app use my location only when the app is open. That’s missing from Android and is just another check against it in my book. Now, my son loves Android, has a Galaxy 8 that is still running as fast and smooth at the day he got it a year ago. No matter how much I try to cajole or bribe him with the latest IPhone, he refuses to switch....sigh..where did I go wrong. >

Of course, but that means I have to carry my work laptop, the surface pro, and my phone. When I can do basic stuff with my DEX for personal use and have my work laptop. Since I take my phone with me anyways, thats all I need.

I like both equally, switch all the time. They both bring good things to do what I need to get done daily. Don't hate either one or love either one more than the other. I will say this tho, everything is constantly evolving and Android is not what it used to be by a long shot. I don't judge either tho one way or the other, use what you like and like what you use, simple.

So my reason for why iOS is my preference over android has been restrengthen recently with visual proof.

The new Note 9 which is an overclocked snapdragon 845 is faster than the Samsung S9 which beat the iPhone X in real world test when opening and closing apps when the first S9 released.

Now with an iOS beta 12 update, we see last years X beating the Note 9 that was just released.

Wow.

Not to mention ALL iPhones back to the 5S will see an increase in performance when iOS 12 goes live!

Looks like they improved the hell out of RAM management.
