I'm not even trying to "improve" anything directly, as in hoping that Apple has an intern jotting down notes from all my posts and turning them into a wishlist for next product.

But I've had fun discussing it, and have even learned about some new tools for customization in the process.

Okay, and some people like the way Harry Potter ended, and some people loath it, and it's still worth discussing. If I said I didn't like the end of Harry Potter because of X, Y, and Z, you wouldn't tell me it's because the ending "wasn't written for me, it was written for everyone," would you?

Why is the UI better "for everyone"? How are single color icons more accessible than multi-color icons?

That goes for all of us by the way, including me—we should all try our best to enumerate what we like and don't like about an interface, or we'll only ever go around in circles. It's hard! I work in a company of mostly professional graphic designers, and even they sometimes have trouble defining what is or is not working in a design. But it's the only way.
am not saying the UI is better for anyone! it's just is exactly what it is. and i love a 'lively discussion'... am not mad at anyone, we're all entitled to our opinion.

opinion is not fact, tho. i keep coming back to that. the new GUI is not ugly, it's ugly to some. it's not problematic... it's problematic for some. and that's what frustrates me, this "big sur sucks and if you can't see that you're blind' attitude that some here take. for the rest, we're good 👍

being new to macs, i don't know how new os's are done? so with big sur, if they choose to, they could what, either do an update to the big sur os that would change it's looks, or, come out with a new os like "little sur" that would replace the big sur os?

They usually don’t make any significant changes to the OS’ appearance until the next release of macOS. And even then they are unlikely to change much unless they’re going for a new look (Big Sur, for example).

on average, how many new os's have come out that a person can install on their current computer? let's say a person bought a mac in 2011 with the lion os, and he still has that computer now, how many newer os versions could he install on that 2011 mac? could he install the latest, big sur?

It varies depending on the hardware. I actually did buy a 2011 iMac, which came with Snow Leopard, and the last OS it supported was High Sierra. So in total it got 7 OS updates.

since the M1 is out, and if a person had the M1 with big sur, and if he wanted to, could he revert back to previous mac os's, and if so, how far back could he go?

No. The earlier versions of macOS do not have support for Apple’s new M1 chip, so it’s impossible.

I am just laughing at the people complaining about Big Sur UI. Can't believe they kept complaining the entire day about details that don't even disturb the result of your work on Big Sur.

Come on, neuomorphism will never be a success. I am yet to see a full fledged website or app done in this ridiculous aspect, even if it existed I would never use it. Flat design is here to stay for years. Accept this fact or die. =)

Meanwhile, I have spent a few hours recreating my colorful folder icons collection for the Big Sur folder style. Previously they were made for El Capitan/Catalina and I carried them through subsequent upgrades until Big Sur. I think I did a pretty good job, considering that I haven't slept more than 4 hours last night due to work assignments. Might change a few more icons later. I actually remembered how I did change the Applications folder icon before on Catalina and used the same trick to change the Documents folder icon this time. A nice touch of brazilian colors for my folders on my dock, and after I move to Spain both Applications and Documents folder will be red, to form the Spanish flag =)

Good night y'all, I'm off to watch my episodes of F1: Drive To Survive Season 3...

i appreciate your optimism... but doubt that, with tech in general, and computers. we'll see much cyclical behavior. i think things will get simpler, perhaps more abstract; i mean, if you're 25, you've grown up with computers, you didn't have to adapt to them; and over time, no one will remember (or care) about what a filofax was, or a paper notepad.

whatever happens next, i look forward to it; i love change, find it challenging (in the best way), adventurous.

and apple controls all of this; we'll see where the next OS takes us (and how many on this thread show up to 'not meltdown' about it) ;)

There is a grain of truth in this. I was 19 when I purchased my first computer—the year was 1982. So, like the current couple of generations, most of my adult working life was sans computer; in fact, I still have (and use) my DayTimer on my desk.

So, has apple fixed any of big sur UI since first release?
1. Downsampled window previews are not smoothed in mission control.
2. Menu bar using incorrect colors, both background and text, while using same wallpaper.
3. Stuck toolbar button hover color.
4. Glitchy titlebar separator.
5. Blurry icons.
6. Using old table UI (e.g. in activity monitor only Disk tab uses new style).
7. Active/inactive tab intersection not creating lighter color in dark mode.
8. Scrollbar not adjusted for new window corner radius.
9. Tab overview is extremely glitchy and not adjusted for new appearance at all.
10. Glitchy text rendering in menus.
11. Animations suddenly getting laggy.
12. Toolbar buttons color flashing while in fullscreen (only Xcode?).
etc etc

Big Sur could look good but is very unpolished.
Apple needs to hire some people that have attention to detail and put them to macOS team if such team even exists anymore.

[Recent Office versions'] backstage drives me nuts.

As do various other unnecessary changes to Office applications, such as flat-design scroll bars which are non-obvious as to what’s the scroll bar and what’s the background slider, and how Microsoft dumbed-down the controls for Excel spreadsheet tabs (now takes pressing ctrl to arrow over to the right-most or left-most tab, where previously the arrow icons for that were always visible).
-----Agreed; Office 2010 had the best UI design for Office on Windows. And, if you go back and read all of Microsoft's blog posts about it at the time, it was based on actual usability research. Then they had to go and start throwing some of it away…

Another gem of an interface "improvement" is transparency of titlebars that I think started with Windows 7.

Talk about distracting the user...

While many of us are fighting to recognize & differentiate the flat-design monochromatic titlebars/borders (or non-existent borders) amongst other nearby or overlapping windows, how possibly could making a titlebar/border blend in with the surrounding background have been considered a good idea? A different/new idea yes, but good?

There's good reason the world has not moved to translucent/tracing paper in books and on our desks.
-----I don't recall Windows 7's translucency and transparency effects as not having been just foggy enough that you couldn't tell windows apart; then again, that might have depending on having a high-contrast desktop background, and the computers I used at the time always did (more often than not just a solid swath of black, IIRC? Perhaps my memory's a bit fuzzy on that, though.) Plus, the drop shadows helped here.

I've decided to improve my folders, I wasn't satisfied with the consistency of my colors and a few other details on the icons I did yesterday. This time I optimized the process and you can clearly tell the difference between the default folder icon and the custom icons. Applications is still using the default:

I just did a small batch of icons, the rest of the icons will be updated later... when time permits.

Good work. What app do you use for editing the gradients, shadows, etc?

I'm considering selling my one month old M1 MBA partly due to how much I hate Big Sur UI. I'll even go as far as to say that I prefer the OS X UI on a non-retina screen than Big Sur on a 218ppi display.
This is what I'm afraid of and what makes me hesitant to buy another Mac. Mine is a 2016, running Mojave. The keyboard sucks and the tabstrip is useless, but Big Sur is not a good trade-off because aesthetically, everything about it gives me a headache. And as far as I can tell, not one single new feature is valuable to me, while they have further locked down the ability to change anything.

Yes please. What do you think of Big Sur?
i think it's fine. i like the look of it (but i like sleek minimalism); most importantly, all my work apps work, and life goes on.

to be honest, i work just as i did in catalina, and every mac os that preceded that. am, as always, more interested in what happens under the hood; most important of all, i want to be able to do the things i do on my macs... and i can.

that's just... sad (hey! only in my opinion). you're stressing details in an OS, over that OSes functionaliy, speed, capabilities. besides, soon there will be the next OS, and perhaps that will look better to you (perhaps).

i buy my tech gear for what i can do with it; yes, aesthetics matter (i spend a LOT more on my video projector over another brand for it's design); but (for me), macs all look pretty good, so mostly, i want a mac that is up-to-date, and ready for what's next.

The problem with this is that everything "works" for me perfectly on Mojave. Since then there hasn't been any feature that appeals to me in any way.
* Sidecar, aka CLOWN Car: Why? I don't even own an ipad but if I did, still... why?
* Emojis: I don't mind that they exist, they're easy to ignore, but it's embarassing that a company would actually market this as a feature

None of the features they highlight matter to me at all.

And if I buy a new MacBook Pro, I am forced to use Big Sur, or whatever the next disaster release is.

I agree. It is sad that Macs haven't innovated a single cool new feature since 2018, and that I will have to use the exact OS version dictated by Apple because what do I know about my own needs. I'm just renting the software AND hardware.
