And don't forget the size of the case - a point that seems to be forgotten when discussing large phone specs :)

720p display that will cost you over $850.00 will not sell out.

1) $750 and 2) 828p, 1792x828 (between 720 and 1080). Not even the iphone 8 was 720p, it was 1334x750.

And, again, hogwash. See below. The usage statistics show that the average user doesnt care about screen resolution/PPI. 34% of smartphone users are using screens under 1080 just fine.

To the topic, the "average phone buyer" simply doesn't care about resolution or being on the "PPI patrol" as Flossy Carter would say. If you're a spec wh*re, well the XR is not meant for you to begin with; thats why the XS and Max exist. The XR meant to replace the iphone 6/7/8 line at the low end of the current model year phone spectrum, not the Plus, and not the high end users who demand top specs.

If 326PPI was "garbage" we would not see 5 of the top 10 phones being used (data taken in Q2 2018) in the US being 326PPI; 34% of smartphone users in the US are ok with 326PPI by the data below.

And last I checked there was somewhere around 235 million smartphone users in the US alone. That is a BOATLOAD of potential XR buyers; 80 million.

Country Position Phone model Share
USA 1 iPhone 7 12.05%
USA 2 iPhone 7 Plus 9.96%
USA 3 iPhone 6S 7.77%
USA 4 iPhone 6 6.22%
USA 5 iPhone 8 Plus 5.68%
USA 6 iPhone X 5.00%
USA 7 iPhone 6S Plus 4.34%
USA 8 iPhone 8 4.04%
USA 9 iPhone SE 3.89%
USA 10 Samsung Galaxy S8 2.96%

Same wide angle lens and computing software, but does not have the 2x zoom lens
I think there’s a couple of those extra lighting modes missing too. I can’t remember which ones. Stage lighting (whatever the one with the black background is called) is missing. I don’t remember what the other one was. Sorry, long day. Zzzz

If you want an unlocked XR, you just pick your carrier and pay the full price. When you pay full price, you get an unlocked phone and a sim card for the carrier of your choice.

This is what it says in my cart when I try to buy the XR: "Unlocked iPhone with AT&T SIM"

Yup. That's more or less how it's always worked with paying full price. Keep in mind that this only works if you buy through the Apple store. If you buy through a carrier, I'm fairly certain it's still locked to the carrier.

And it's going to destroy the XS and Max in sales.

Its Kind of already obvious the XR will do well. I mean, Apple slated this phone to be highly successful by including a lot of the architecture and key components from both the iPhone 8 and iPhone XS, with an adequate price point, six colors to choose from and it includes a new form factor and Face ID. So when you factor all those things together with a _cheaper_ price under the XS, clearly it’s going to sell.

For all the flak Apple gets for the 2012 screen tech, they did something I never thought they would do, put the same chipset in as the Xs and Xs Max.
Apple's M.O. would have been to put last year's chips and save a bunch of money and use up existing stock.
Of course they are charging $$$ like it has current chips in it but still...

They ensured the phone will have a really nice screen, be really really fast, and have an amazing battery life (on paper at least).

When Apple puts a price tag of 50 Usd above the last years Iphone 8 the least we can expect is to have the current chipset. Especially when you compare it to flagship phones from the competitors which are priced at same 700-800 range.

Reading these forums I am starting to feel that Apple was somewhat succesfull in their marketing to make people suddenly think that the Xs is the new normal for pricing and the Xr is the “budget phone”. While in fact you are paying more for it than for the past years flagship.

Right but the much bigger (4.7" vs 6.1") edgeless screen has more cost than a usual smaller phone model by size and design alone; so does the face ID hardware.

From the X parts cost, the Face ID array is $16.70 part cost.

$50 more is really a drop in the bucket increase in that respect.

I agree, it will sell well, but I don't think there is a chance in hell that it will outsell the iPhone Xs Max.

If every new feature that the advances in technology brings we could expect infinite increase of prices (discounting the inflation). The way I see it is that the new features are more of a natural progression and on the contrary we can expect to have more for the same money at the next year than this year.

You think the global market for an £1100-1500 iPhone is bigger than the one for a £749? I can’t fathom how that would be the case when the cheaper one reaches far more people through its lower price tag? Just from personal experience I know very few people who are interested in paying £1k for a phone let alone £1100+.

Most people don't pay outright, they pay in installment plans and then keep or trade up again so the actual price of the device doesn't really matter. This whole idea of comparing the overall price between devices when the mass majority of people don't pay outright full price is not a legitimate comparison.

You think the phone that starts at 1100 dollars is going to outsell the one that starts at 750? Apple and pretty much all the professional analysts disagree.
Yes, I do. Overall price of the phones isn't really an issue...most people pay in installment plans. They don't care what the overall price is, they just want the flagship device.

Even on contract or on an upgrade program with a sim only deal an iPhone XS is at least £67p/m. The XR in comparison will be between £30 and £45 so even if people don’t buy phones outright, the price difference is still reflects in a monthly payment.

You also state ‘people want the flagship device’ but that depends on the market. In Europe flagship iPhones have been relegated to 8th most popular in some countries if the iPhone X is anything to go by.

5 Pages of people saying a 720p phone will never sell. Has anyone ever stepped foot outside this forum? This phone will be sold out through Christmas. I'm honestly worried I won't be able to get one for my daughter for Christmas. Do you think teenage kids know what 720p is? We have a 4K HDR tv and my kids watch netflix on iPads.

This forum is a bubble of insanity.

You realize even Apple projects that the Xr will comprise 50% of Apple sales right? If my math’s right, that means it’ll handily outsell the Max.

Pretty simple really. Price something several hundred dollars lower with specs similar to the more expensive model and offer more colors. Your average Macrumors reader may not bite, but your average Joe sure will.

Yeah, if you live on tech forums all day, you're bound to be completely out of touch with the real world. The vast majority of users aren't going to give a damn about PPI. They're going to care about "Omigod it comes in coral now?! And baby blue?! How do I choose?!"
