But one of the reason also is because of Android and iOS. Always three or so apps at the bottom.

A Dock makes more sense than a taskbar on a phone or tablet.

A windows 98 or windows XP look would be really hard on a phone or tablet.

Well people get use to iOS, Chrome, Android Dex it is well less of learning curve for all the people using iPhone or Android phone now.

And more OS makers are going that way now, and well Microsoft is making more midway look. I don’t think Microsoft will go all the way to not come across OSX clone. But a looking really close just not a clone.

Even Android Dex and Chrome OS have it so it less of learning curve having a app like icon than a taskbar.

This is less friendly on a phone or tablet.

Sort it be more like taskbar that acts more like Dock.

Even windows 7 started this move. Not a classic taskbar but a taskbar that acts more like a Dock. Windows 11 just moved it to the middle than the left and the start menu displays icons and name now not a list view like before.

Also making the learning curve similar to people use to way Android, Chrome, and more so the iOS that is very popular in the US.

It comes down to really.

A. classic windows 98 and windows XP look
B. OSX/ iOS look
C. midway look that is used in windows 7 and windows 10 and more so in windows 11

D. Windows 8 metro look.

Windows 8 was a major flop so Microsoft does not want to go that way and does not want a pure OSX look so is finding a midway look.
I prefer the Windows Vista taskbar with the Quick Launch toolbar. Back then, it actually made sense and was unique, but then they just ripped off Apple with Windows 7. The Start button no longer served its purpose and just acted as a logoff/shutdown button basically.
The media event is tomorrow, and we're all basing a lot of what to expect on a leaked unfinished version I'd hold off on any judgements until you can get your hands on the actual beta.
One thing I'm excited for though... 👀

Well even in beta if the text is blurry Microsoft could fix it from some where in beta to when it comes out.

Android uses Google's "Material Design" language.
I think this is what I got confused over.

When unveiling Android 12 in May 2021, Google unveiled a concept known as "Material You", emphasizing increased animation, larger buttons, and the ability for custom UI themes to be generated from the user's wallpaper.

Why Apple is going in other direction.

Material Design is always in a state of flux. Unlike Holo, which was a standard, Material Design keeps getting revised over and over again, and ends up fragmented especially with many third-party developers unable to keep up. Holo was far more consistent.

That being said, Samsung's One UI is going towards more the 'utopian' or 'neuomorphic' approach, getting a more modern TouchWizzy vibe which has my interest peaked. I never was into the whole flat UI bandwagon in the first place--I'm glad it's finally looking like it's over.

Apple on the other hand is still stuck in iOS 7/Mac OS X Yosemite land.

So if you or some one here where to speculate what design Apple will do next year or the year after because the look is getting really old now going all the way back to iOS 7 so what design will Apple go after?

I can’t see Apple not doing any thing now after windows 11 and android 12. So probably next year or the year after Apple will being out a new design.

Now that windows 11 is coming out and Android 12  Yes Apple must feel embarrassed now but they could not bring out a new design in less than year. As it probably take year or more likely two years to they switch.

Well I'm not sure if Apple will copy some one design or make their own design. If you where to speculate what design Apple will go after?

Unfortunately, no one seems tired of flat UI or iOS 7/Yosemite UI. Skeuo got 'dated' to folks six years in, yet we have surpassed 9 years of flat with not much end in sight. I don't understand it myself.

Jony Ive isn't even the UI designer, and we've seen what Big Sur became. It has an identity crisis--one part skeuo, another part flat. Until it harms sales, I doubt Tim will even do anything.

However, Apple did copy the flat UI bandwagon when Microsoft released Windows 8 one year prior, so who knows? Maybe Microsoft will be the barometer they use again!

The problem is Windows 11 seems to be going to a neuomorphic look now and Android 12 to a Material You look.

I don’t know if Apple can copy material You or neuomorphic with out getting a copyright strike. So Apple will most likely make it flatter or some where in midle like close to neuomorphic look or may be similar to Android 12.

Well many of the threads here many of the people are tired of iOS 7 and want some thing new. But skeuomorph supporters are probably still a minority.

When you look at most of the Linux distros now it the flat look now. So even jumping to Linux you not going to find skeuomorph. So the only way now is if you have old copy of OSX or windows.

The new android 12 well not skeuomorph does seem more refreshing and more appealing to computer tinkers that like changing themes.

I had an iPhone than got tired of it and switched to Android because I really like the Holo look.

And man I like that look than Android switched to the Materiel look and I lost interested in Android. Also the fact that iOS had more apps to choose from and better quality of apps. And with Google it is tracking you every where on Android and no privacy along with littile apps to choose from and lower quality of apps I switched back to Apple.

In way Android Materiel look was way flatter looking than iOS. And only had short time with Holo look.

Oh man, trying to watch this is so painful. I finally got it going somewhat on my iPad. Kind of ironic, my PC just hangs there, and yet its working on my iPad ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Uhm... says starting at 11, but nothing... not to mention the buffering issues. Powered by Microsoft™ (yes this is an inside joke).

Android apps with mouse and keyboard. I can't imagine a better user experience than that. Looks like they really didn't change the OS at all, they just added more features like stupid widgets and a different taskbar, leaving EVERYTHING ELSE as is. Unbelievable.

That's it? With all the buffering did I miss the release date and price?

Edit: Found the answer elsewhere.

Microsoft says that Windows 11 will begin shipping to customers this fall, and Windows Insiders can begin testing a preview of the release next week. Windows 11 will be a free upgrade for Windows 10 users, as long as your existing PC is compatible with Windows 11's new system requirements.

That's good, at least.

So, they're adding Samsung split windows group and Android apps but through Amazon app store? Hope you can side load Google Play Store.

I have to use Windows at work because of my company's Microsoft addiction. They'll eventually "upgrade" to this. This is a freight train coming towards me. Maybe I should just change my job...

I like it.. The UI looks much cleaner and modern and Android apps are a nice addition for those who might want it / use it. I also really dig the widgets. I might be in the minority here based on previous responses, but I am looking forward to it...

They did not mention system requirements. If they are going to require. TPM 2.0 that’s is going to leave billions of capable computers unsupported.
