Looks like 22000.194 is the general release version since that's what the new Surface Pro 8 is shipped with. Coincidentally, ran into a visual bug today on that version where playing Spotify in a browser tab in background then watching YouTube in a foreground tab caused the speaker icon to falsely show muted.

its out early :) running it on my Surface Laptop 3, its different!

Yeah, word got out that MS released it early - I'm on build 22471_rs_prelease - not sure what my next steps will be. I do think at some point in the near future, I'll want to stop getting the betas. I may just wipe and reinstall clean just to be safe. With that said, the developer previews have largely been stable for me but yet at the end of the day they are betas.

I'm reworking my PowerShell script and once that's done I can do a clean install If that's the direction I choose.

Normally you should be able to opt out the insider ring in the settings and you'll be back to normal releases with the next bigger update for 11.

I've been running it on both my Surface Pro 7 and Surface Book 2 since it was available to test in the insider program and really haven't had any stability issues at all. UI personal preference issues, maybe a little but other than that it's been pretty solid and feels fresh.

So.... I installed it last night. I like the centered taskbar. And.... that's about it.

Bottom right icons such as bluetooth, audio, and wifi settings now take more clicks to do what I want. While the centered taskbar is nice, it's also about double the height of the small sized taskbar from Windows 10. And right clicking it I can't open task manager anymore.

Performance is the same. No standout features except for improved wallpapers. Nothing exceedingly pisses me off. This is nothing but a UI Skin for Windows 10 it seems.

it's a theme with less features than before (taskbar, start menu). But you got Auto HDR and other gaming benefits I think? I don't game on PC though anymore

I'm just confused why Windows 11 exists, honestly. I know they wanted Android apps to work on it and that isn't even in this initial build, not that I would want to run them anyways. Just very odd by Microsoft to release this. It's not like it's bad, but it just isn't, anything substantial.

Yeah, it could have been a feature update and no one would have complained. But they broke hardware compatibility with a huge part of their userbase for whatever reason, so they had to do a major version bump.

I think there are a few reasons..

1. Stricter compatibility requirements = they can stop having to support older hardware and machines.
2. Sales = Since Win 10 has a date with the executioner, people and places are going to be forced to purchase new machines.

I was fine with Win 10 as they had it rock solid for the most part and in my opinion it passed macOS for stability, ease of use and speed... Why they'd take the risk of messing that up I don't understand but since Win 11 is kinda, almost Win 10 with a new skin, it should be fine..

Time will tell though as MS has a habit and a history of stellar OS - followed by a crappy OS - followed by a stellar OS and on and on...

One of the reasons it exists is higher performance on the same hardware. It is better at putting the job you want to do (i.e. what you click on) at high priority and the job it wants to do (scan for viruses, eg) at low priority. You can do more things more quickly, especially just after you have just booted up. You don't have to wait till it has checked for updates before you can open Word. Just that is worth the price of admission.

I think it makes sense, ultimately its not just about a new theme, but changes for quality of life. Better scaling, better multi-monitor/laptop support. Running Android devices. Snap Groups and snap layouts, widgets makes a return, better support for tablets.

Could they have done this in windows 10 - sure, but given how much different it looks, given that they're competing against other platforms, it makes sense to roll out a new version. I mean apple does this annually and most of the updates from year to year are even more meager then what MS is rolling out in windows 11. I'm not knocking apple, but rather pointing out that at this point in time, the era of huge upgrades with giant feature lists are long gone.

Is scaling any different than in 10? It's absolutely the same as before for me, with the same bugs. Restoring window positions works though, for say 90% of the time. That's a huge improvement over 10 where I rearranged everything multiple times a day.

BTW: if you are as annoyed as me, that only few applications support the snap layouts flyout: Window|Meta + Z is your friend!

I don't know, for me it's some long overdue changes and fixes (better settings menu, window positions...) and a reworked taskbar/start menu. All the things they changed under the hood would have been a perfect Windows 10 feature or even bugfix update.

I think they decided to go for 11 so that they can enforce these silly hardware requirements.

I mean, I don't care at all if it's called 10 or 11. I also don't care if I use Firefox 93 or 94. Version numbers should always follow semantic versioning, that works great.

Don't get me wrong, 11 is just as stable as 10 for me. But I expected more. This clearly needed more time, they stopped development of Windows 10X, took the taskbar, menu and rounded corners and squeezed it into 10 and called it 11. That what it feels to me.

btw: the problem with the ui scaling is, that it breaks apart when my laptop goes to sleep. It's then in a weird state where application windows are either tiny and think they are fullscreen or they are normal but not fullscreen or of a certain size. Only unplugging the screen or setting scaling to something else and back fixes that.

So I had the opportunity to upgrade my Lenovo Yoga 6 to Windows 11. Super easy and straightforward. It looks stunning on this screen. Performance was a little poorer than Win 10, but I suspect that will improve as the system gets optimized.

But, the UI. :( The UI is more sparse and with more whitespace than Windows 10. Not as bad as Windows 8.x, but not good, IMO. I guess that's to be expected since Microsoft did away with the "tablet mode" of Win 10.

I miss the more compact UI of Windows 95 ➜ Windows 7 where I could get more on the screen. After kicking the tires on it for a few hours, I went back to Win10.

Why is there a bright, white screen for a few seconds right before I launch certain apps like Edge?
