You're acting like that's a final build...

It's almost like you purposefully want to be disappointed.
more like I lost all hope I guess. I’ll be happy if I’m wrong and everything that’s currently in this build and not reworked changes, but I doubt it

Were you expecting a complete rewrite of the operating system in a very very very early build?

Well, I would certainly expect a total re-write of the Kernel at some stage.

Apple has done it twice, going from System 9 to OS X, and more recently going from macOS 10.14 (Mojave) to macOS 11 (Big Sur) via Catalina. (Catalina is to Big Sur as Win 8 is to Win 10. A nice first attempt, but not really there.)

Microsoft has twice announced moving to a Linux/Unix style kernel. Once in the early 1980's and again more recently.
They can do it with the equivalent of Rosetta (i.e. build in a robust version of WINE/Crossover) to support older software until the developers catch up.

It is disappointing. I don't expect a ground up rewrite as they need to retain underlying compatibility with apps.

I was expecting ALL the UI to be refreshed and consistent.

Again they stopped short. So many UI are still legacy.

It's very responsive on my laptop with 4GB of RAM.

The kernel hasn't been rewritten since 1993.

The kernel (xnu) was not rewritten in Catalina. Catalina lost support for 32-bit applications, if that's what you're thinking of.

No, I was thinking more of the separating off of the System Volume from the Data Volume, and the adoption of a new CPU architecture.

Like i said, dont expect big things from Win 11...it looks just a UI small changes with rounded corners
the under UI is the same
A lot of users are asking if Microsoft will replace win10 with this...this change will make some old laptops with iGpu struggle with the new UI...

On my very modest i5 SFF Dell, upping from 8 to 16 GB made a very significant difference (despite a fairly fast SSD for swap). Using a Surface 7, I don't have that upgrade option and am convinced some of its performance issues are due to memory.

On that basis, I'm not going to buy a Windows machine with only 8GB.

I'm a big believer in getting as much as possible within budget as excess RAM is used for caching commonly used files and it generally makes the CPU feel faster by lowering latency which is a huge cost in instruction execution. A lot of RAM can compensate for a slow CPU. Even moreso than replacing a HDD with an SSD.

They can still surprise us and say: look, that was an early beta missing half the new features. But I'm pretty sure it will be more like: look, that was an early beta and it was missing the new volume rocker ui, and we will update every other part of the system later down the road.

Just as they promised last time. lol

Is W11 finally based on Unix/Linux? If not, I will use W11 exactly for what I use previous versions, to play Solitaire (and a few other games).

No. It be NT

But the screenshots of the new taskbar and start button are looking more OSX like and Ubuntu like than windows did in the past.

Yeah, I want them to overhaul the experience on touchscreen devices.

Heck, give us Windows 11 Mobile! :p

Microsoft killed windows 8 the metro interface.

The windows 8 metro was a disaster for Microsoft. Part of that it was terrible for desktop experience but okay for mobile. People where really bad at Microsoft for forcing mobile OS on desktop or laptop computer.

But windows 10 is terrible for tablet or phone. As Windows 10 is desktop OS.

One of the worst aspects of Windows 8 for me was remote access. Trying to help people when you are connected remotely and being forced to do odd things to get round the touch aspects of things...

8.1 helped, a bit.

It isn't 100% gone. At least the last time I messed with my Surface Pro 3 in tablet mode it basically reverts back to a fullscreen Start Bar experience.

It's an early leaked build that was never meant to be shown to the public right now. Don't expect most of the changes to be implemented right now.
