But then you can't use an iPad as a computer replacement either...so there you have it. Despite what Apple would have you belive.....my MBP can do things my iPad can only dream about in its sleep. iPad is NOT a computer replacement...not close. But I will agree Apple makes better tablets than anything I have found out there.
Sure, but neither is Android

iOS for my use cases is dumb and oppressive which makes it more like a blown up iPod with calling capability. Trying to use it as a computer substitute I run into limitations like limited background multitasking so active SSH session with Termius now dies in the background after about 20 seconds on iOS 13 when it used to be 10 minutes on iOS QUOTE]

So the advantages of the 11 Pro are what then to stay relevant to the OP’s question?

Smh, the iPad is a computer... by Webster dictionary is a programmable usually electronic device that can store, retrieve, and process data.

Of course, the iPad has shortcomings.. it’s a fairly new OS compared to mature OS like Windows and macOS. But to say it’s not a computer.. makes no sense. And I’m currently using it as a laptop replacement.

So then my phone is a computer too? My watch.... there a lot of things that fit that description ..... doesn’t make them computers.
My programmable coffee maker can do those things....

By that description, it does. A phone is a computer. Why say otherwise? Because it doesn’t have a keyboard attached to it... or a mouse? Heck, Android phones is capable of using a external keyboard and mouse.

Why try to pigeon hole a computer into a screen, keyboard and mouse? That’s a tradition way of thinking...

If it has computer chips, then yes. It is a computer, however the technical aspects of it... makes it highly limited in the functions it can do.

But my point is... iPad can’t replace a laptop for you. Which, you probably have software that’s not available for the iPad that rules out that possibility. But there are plenty of folks that feel a iPad can fill that void.

My point is... as the iPad is limited in the scope and functionality just as my coffee maker is. It can do something’s but when compared to a real computer like my MBP it severely fails.

It is what it is. And I agree that in terms of functionality... the MBP is far more capable than the iPad. All I’m trying to acknowledge... that it’s a computer. But now that you are going even further by using real computer, I’m just going to give up on it. Agree to disagree.

Yeah we can agree to disagree :)
But I only used real as an adverb in that sentence. Because if computer then you mean being able to do basic things then yes it is as much a computer as my programmable coffee maker.

Computer never meant that it can run app or spreadsheets or the like. Computer is a very generic term. Hence all of Apple’s digital devices ARE computers.

Real doesn’t ring a bell as a definition - Apple’s stuff is hardly unreal. You just use it to describe personal computer stuff.

well you certainly subscribe to Apple's marketing scheme. Sorry but computer in the general term that it has been used by since well computers came along...the iPad does not fit that definition.. It is very limited in functionality. Like I said my programmable coffee maker can do some basic things too...does that make it a computer as well?

Most smart devices are computers. And the servers of your internet hoster and provider as well as the computers in your car. None have all features you refer to as real.

Personal computers are not the only computer devices. Quoting Wikipedia:

“Computers are used as control systems for a wide variety of industrial and consumer devices. This includes simple special purpose devices like microwave ovens and remote controls, factory devices such as industrial robots and computer-aided design, and also general purpose devices like personal computers and mobile devices such as smartphones. The Internet is run on computers and it connects hundreds of millions of other computers and their users.”

Hope that clarifies it for you.

I don’t give much about what Apple says in its ads.

Sure they do.....my definition is the general definition of a computer whether it be portable or not.
I tried using a 11 inch iPad Pro last year as a laptop replacement. It went horribly bad. From the keyboard replacement to mouse replacement to just using it in general it failed to replace my MBP.

iPads are great for surfing and general entertainment. They are NOT computer replacements.
Don't buy into the hype just because Apple says so :)

Most smart devices are computers.
That does not make them computers. They have computational abilities but that doesn't make them computers. It makes them smart devices. Technology is evolving and changing daily and sometimes the lines get blurred.

There hope that clarifies things for you. If you want to dumb down the meaning of computers to fit iPads then do so.
Hope that clarifies things for you.

A car is one kind of vehicle. You insist that every vehicle needs to be a car. I am not the one dumbing down the definition. I even quoted from Wiki so I am hardly alone.

You are not alone. It’s pointless going back and forth, because I think they know that the iPad is a computer... he admits it very apathetically.

The fact he mention that he tried to use the iPad as a laptop replacement, gives me an idea he understands the meaning behind it. He just refuses to use the iPad as a laptop replacement, doesn’t change the fact that people has actually made it possible. And given that the term laptop was used, I would conclude that encompasses what a computer is.

True a car is a vehicle...but it also has computational elements inside. Does that make it a computer? It does by your definition! LOL. Then no I don't insist every vehicle needs to be a car...where did I say that?
You are getting offtrack with your analogys.

Wrong...not that I refused...it could NOT do most of the things I used my MBP for. It failed quite miserably.
My iPad is a great entertainment device....but it fails as a computer replacement.
Can it do computational things...YES but that doesn't make it a computer any more than my programmable coffee make is a computer...or my car is a computer because it has computational abilities as well.

Lol... I’m curious, by YOUR definition. What is a computer?

Tablet computers are computers. Different strengths but those who disagree may feel free to rewrite the Wikipedia article on the subject. Or maybe read it it first to understand what counts as computers and what types there are.

it isn't just because you call it that.
Then by the strict definition you are using so is my programmable coffee maker and my car.....
