I have never heard of that before. Are you by any chance running another workout app at the same time? WatchOS does not allow that and would kill off the workout session in WOD. This would cause many issues including the app no longer appearing when you raise your wrist, and would probably also affect the icon shown by watchOS.
My bad, I tested this again. Turns out the return to workout screen function would kick in after a few seconds of dropping the wrist (during the previous test I was raising and dropping almost within a second). Also, the running icon thing only works for apple watch workout app, but not WOD app icon, even if I launch a workout under WOD.

Is there a way to further tweat the "Next Interval Countdown" setting? I mean change how many seconds it starts to gives you a voice update. Or change the 5 second countdown to say 3 seconds or no countdown at all with just the x seconds remaining voice.

Can you enlarge the text on the other screens? I am getting to where I need reading glasses and some text is hard to see.
Which screens do you mean? If they are on the watch app then I could bear it in mind whilst I rewrite that for the AOD.

For example, as a result of the previous comment, I have just rewritten the summary screen at the end of the workout to use much larger text.

I may make that more configurable in the future, but it is rarely requested and to be honest I have to be careful not to overdo the configurability (which is a common complaint about the app). It sounds a good idea though.

The text when choosing the correct Interval Schedule on Watch could be bigger and more meaningful. It would be great if it listed the overall workout time or distance (if it’s not open ended) and it’s not necessary to list so many details about each interval.

Or, a way to show a detaile3 summary of a single Schedule from the selection screen would be awesome !

Those are good suggestions and I will add them to my list, but at the moment I am mainly focussed on getting it working with the AOD. Changing text size whilst rewriting the user interface is easy, but improving the functionality would take more time.

It's a hard choice because there are improvements that are best made now whilst I am rewriting, but at the same time I am conscious that people are waiting for AOD. So I have to consider each area as I rewrite it. For example the main menu and the screens during the workout are almost identical. However the summary screen is now radically different.

Over the years more and more metrics have become available (power, ground time, vertical oscillation etc) and the current summary screen was looking cramped and limited, so I have rewritten it. This took time and has probably slightly delayed the AOD version, but it felt worthwhile. It would have been a waste of time to rewrite the existing screen and then change it again in the near future.

I have not yet started on the Start screens, including selecting the schedules, so I will consider making changes as I code them, and will bear in mind your suggestions.

Garmin give some beeps to the User before the next Interval will start. And the beeps are getting faster to the interval start.

Why is the volume in workoutdoors on apple watch so low compared to the workouts app on Apple watch? The volume in settings is already maxed out...

When I start running, the app gives no heart rate. After 1 km it's detecting my heart beat. Is it due to the app or the apple watch sensors?

Mainly the watch screens where you have the different metrics, like on the Speed page you have mph, av pace, speed, etc. Whatever one has configured it to be. Just so at a glance you can recall what that specific reading is.

The app uses Siri for speaking alerts, so make sure that your Siri volume is not low.

The heart rate not updating is a common issue with the sensor, especially if it is cold. I very rarely hear about it over the Summer months but it is a regular complaint during every Winter. It is getting better each year, so I think the hardware and/or software are improving but it is still a problem for many people.

Apple have some hints on how to help here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207941#heartrate. I have also heard that wearing the watch on the other wrist can help for a few people, maybe because their blood vessels are closer to the surface on that other wrist.

However even these hints don't help for some people and then I recommend using an external heart rate monitor, which work in a very different way. These detect electrical impulses whereas the watch sensor is optical. The watch beams a light into your wrist and detects heart beats from the reflections. However the effectiveness of this varies between people (tattoos, deeper blood vessels etc) and is also greatly affected by cold and also by motion. Some people only use an external monitor in the colder months and can get by in the warmer months, but a few people need it all year round.

You can control the text size on the main workout screens in the Screens tab. It is a trade off between the size of the text and the number of metrics that are shown.

Doing that changes the data readout, It doesn't seem to change the sub-heading that describes what that data is. Like the actual text of "av. pace" "speed" etc.

Sorry, that can't be changed. I don't think anyone has ever asked for that.

It is deliberately small because it doesn't change and you rarely need to see what it says, so making it small allows more room for the values, which can be constantly changing and therefore benefit more from being larger. If you do need to see what the metric is then you can tap it, which will show it full screen for a few seconds, with a full description.

Hello, I saw a mention of this in an earlier post on page 156 I think, but is there any progress to that planned elevation profile and where your position is on it? I'm an avid hiker and that's one feature I'd love to see.

The route improvements were joint top of my to-do list, along with the always on display. I like to work on more than one feature at a time so that I can swap between them when I get bored. However the always on display seems to have taken priority. Sorry about that. There are so many aspects to the rewrite that I haven't got bored whilst coding it.

However the navigation improvements will be top of the list after the always on display.

At long last, I have finally found the smoking gun for my elevated heart rate numbers.

The situation is: I use WOD to connect to my Wahoo sensor. I do absolutely nothing with Apple Workout on my watch, but apparently it still records regular heart rates during the workout. Absolutely No idea why Apple Watch is consistently recording a heart rate in the 180s at the exact same moment that WOD is recording 140 from the Wahoo.

In any case, now that I know what the problem is ... can I assume that there's no way around it? I guess I need to connect my wahoo to Apple Watch so that it won't use the sensors on the watch itself. Which is unfortunate because it's so much more convenient to connect via WOD.

Does anyone have any ideas here? Or can I just assumed that I am out of luck and need to stop using WOD to connect to my heart sensor.

It's almost too ridiculous to mention, but I have found somewhat of a "Workaround" to my long-running problem with Apple Watch heartrate monitor recording un-realisticly high values during WOD workouts.

I have found (by accident) that if I wear my watch all the way up to the top bony part of my wrist, this is where the bad behavior happens. It's no uncommong for me to get readings as many as 40 beats higher from Apple Watch than for my external heart rate monitor.

However, if I wear my watch about 1/2 inch below the bony part, for whatever reason the heart rate values from apple watch are more consistent. They might be 2-3 beats higher at times, but it doesn't completely ruin my average and max heart rate values when I wear my watch this way.

I have tried the "below the wrist" method for about 5 runs now, and this is consistently working. There are no outlandish (190+) readings when I wear the watch lower.

Likely nobody else cares, but this is a serviceable workaround to this long-running problem for me. As a result, my VO2Max values are starting to get reasonable again and my running program (TrainAsOne) seems to be throwing me more challenging runs

Would you consider adding Orienteering as a workout? I went orienteering today and used Running which was fine but I was trying to use the Ultra compass and the watch kept defaulting back to Workoutdoors. I would double click the crown to get the compass back but it was a bit annoying. I wondered if it might be possible to add a compass as a screen you could add to the orienteering workout.
Great app btw!!
Edit: I see direction and heading are available which is cool, but it would be nice to see an actual compass similar to the actual watch compass. May not be possible?

This would also be useful when hiking.

Are you not seeing the small compasses in the bottom right of the map in WorkOutDoors? The one with the red tip points North and the one with the green tip points to your start location.

In terms of adding Orienteering, the app uses Apple’s workout system, so it is limited to the activity types that offers. In the future I plan to allow the ability to create custom activity types that map to Apple’s types so you will be able to add an Orienteering activity.

Is there any way to set a steps goal, instead distance or time?
That should be possible on the same screen where you set a distance or time goal. If you tap the circle with the dots inside and then tap Fixed Length then it should show Set Distance, Set Time, Set Calories, and Set Steps for activity types that involve steps.

Hello @cfc is it possible to have WOD auto detect workouts with some type of setting eg heart rate level for example?

I always remember to start WOD when I’m going for a run but often forget at the gym. Thanks!

Also any update on AOD? We are all eagerly awaiting the next release :)

Unfortunately that isn't possible. Only watchOS can do that because it requires constant monitoring, which 3rd party apps can't do.

AOD is coming along well but I am not setting myself any deadlines!
