Is there a way to display the direction (heading) to the start point? (aka "the car")
I found the distance to the start point, so I'm half way there.

Nevermind, found the start compass.

Yes, the green "start" compass always points in the direction of your starting position, and if you tap it then the app displays the distance and direction (albeit just as a description) back to the start.

There are also several "course" metrics, one of which is called "Course (Workout)". This shows the bearing of your current position relative to the start of the workout. So that would be exactly 180 degrees out from what you want to see. It's not ideal but may help.

I've been seeing issues with heart rate not establishing until 10-20 minutes into a run. Running ios 14.5 (18E5140k) and WatchOS 6.2.9 (17U203) on a watch 2. GPS stabilizes long before, but seems something regarding getting the heart beat API data from the OS doesn't take hold for a while?

This seems to be a newer problem, but given that the watch is EoS the OS firmware hasn't changed on it in a while.

My workflow is that I only use the watch for running so it is docked until minutes before the workout starts, and I also toggle bluetooth on the watch off at the start of the run (since the watch creates bluetooth congestion with BT headphones if it is left on).

Attaching an example. Anyone else seeing this? On today's run, the app seemed to have to relaunch fully on the watch (got the white circle around the workoutdoors icon for a bit instead of it launched from background cache).

I’m sure the app just taps into the watches standard hrm data. My watch often takes a while to log on during exercise but that’s the same if I use the native app. I use a polar hrm i wear on my upper arm and that works much better for me

Unfortunately this is quite common, especially in colder weather when your blood vessels are further from the surface. Apple have some hints on how to improve it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207941#heartrate.

However, as @andrewstirling says, some people find that they need to use an external sensor instead. For some this is only necessary in Winter, whilst others prefer to use an external sensor all year round.

Oh the temperature being a factor is interesting! It has been when running around low 30s Farenheit and I haven't seen this much with warmer temperatures the majority of the year.

An outdoor walk, fine, heart rate starts read immediately. Outdoor run, it takes approximately 5-10 minutes to start reading properly. As is written in the Apple website article, it’s because the cold but in my case specially the movement.

Yes, it is easier for the sensor to get a lock when you are stationary. This is another reason why I wish Apple would let the app use the heart rate sensor outside of a workout. The app could then show the HR metric on the main menu and you could wait for an HR lock in the same way as you can wait for a GPS lock.

They allow some apps to do this but I have asked repeatedly and never got a response. It would be great to be able to wait for both a GPS and HR lock before starting a workout, especially because it is easier to get both when the user is stationary than when they are moving.

Yes that would be cool.

Garmin and others do this.
You choose your Sport then wait until gps and heartrate is ok and only then you start the Workout.

I hope Apple will answer you qu

Hi Ian!

I have a request regarding routing, waypoints etc. When and if You start working on it - please make it also work in "only map" mode. I just can't live without AOD and I like stock app data more, but every time I use it with WOD.

I just open WOD > Only map > set it to 180 min GPS and without starting a workout I jump to the stock app and I have a nice GPS lock from the start and if I need my breadcrumb trail, a map or to see my preloaded route I just double press the crown and I'm I WOD, double press again and I'm in stock app. It's a win-win for me, so it would be great to have GPS based functionality without starting a trening session in WOD. I also would be happy to pay for that and support You. I almost feel guilty for all those updates for 1 time purchase years ago :D

I haven't really considered whether routing will work in Map Only mode yet. My first thought is that it won't because there will be the concept of starting a workout by selecting a route. Sorry about that, but I will bear it in mind. If it is easy to make it work both for workouts and for Map Only then I will do that, but workouts are the main focus of the app.

You don't have to be sorry :) Thats just my wishlist and probably no one will need it. Thanks!
Hope apple will open up AOD to 3 party (but I doubt it :( )

I could understand them not allowing 3rd party apps to use AOD with watchOS 6, because it was a surprise feature when that was announced, but I was quite hopeful they would allow it with watchOS 7. As they didn't then I am not optimistic for them adding it in the future.

I imagine they have similar reservations about letting devs use AOD as they do about letting us create custom watch faces, but maybe they will be allow both in the future.

After a few days of testing, I can recommend the best combination if you like go hiking or trail running. Komoot app for planning the route and WorkOutDoors for the rest. Plan the route, export the GPX file and import it later in the WOD app. Works perfectly.

WoD still pauses my podcasts in Overcast. What setting should I use? Is it mix?

Hi there!

Yesterday I was sledding with my son on a ~15 m artificial hill and I've notice something. I had a Hike started and all was great on the watch but in WOD and also in an exported file a lot off data is missing. Single sampling points are sometimes 40 sec apart! (attachment, time column) That causes sometimes a 30 m jumps in the track. I've noticed, that the same thing occurs on other activities when I'm not moving while resting, on traffic lights etc. WOD is just not saving them and every activity is missing HR data because I'm not moving. I know this isn't an AW limitation, because sessions from the stock app are always 1 sample per sec (not counting auto and manual pause).

Is there a way to set WOD to always save a 1 sec/sample?

The app should generate a point every couple of seconds if you are static and every second if you are moving quickly. Please send the "wkt" file to info@workoutdoors.net and I will take a look. To do this tap the Export button 3 times quickly.

Hi,

Is it possible to change the hour color over the map?

Thanks
Do you mean the time in the top right? Unfortunately that is drawn by watchOS and cannot be removed (legally at least). However the app allows you to control the darkness of the background behind it, which makes the time more or less obvious. To do this go to the Map settings and change the "Time Background" setting.
