Thanks for awesome work. App is brillant :)
One question , is it possible to end the workout and then continue it after for example few hours?
Nice option for several day hikes

Unfortunately that isn't possible at the moment. The app uses Apple's workout system, which doesn't allow workouts to be modified after being ended.

In the future I may allow workouts to be edited and merged within the WorkOutDoors iPhone app. They would then be inconsistent with the workouts shown in apps that read workouts from Apple's health system, such as the native Fitness and Health apps. However this may not be an issue for some people.

Thank you for answer. I am a new AW user, in the past I used Suunto and Polar watches.
It would be a good feature to be able to change the workout screens using the dial. None of the apps I tested have this capability. Is this a result of some restriction from Apple regarding assigned functions for the buttons?

WorkOutDoors uses the digital crown to zoom in and out of maps. It would be possible to make this configurable, so that you could make it do something else instead, but no-one has ever asked for that before.

Glad you like the app!

It will be very usefull during run to check the screens. In my opinion finger swiping works poorly especially when you are sweaty :) . Another sport brand company - Coros uses their digital crown for screen swiping. It works very well.

75 pages later, a new WOD user and late to the party!

Being a current Garmin user there are two things I'd like to see come to WOD (yes, they have probably already been suggested but there are a lot of posts in this thread!)

  1. Importing routes with TBT directly from plotaroute. Plotaroute already supports creating routes with TBT.
  2. Support for offline maps. There are dozens of websites offering this.
  3. Direct export back to Garmin if possible (TCX or FIT file). I much prefer seeing my route, stats, etc on a browser page than on a phone screen. Strava isn't really an answer unless you pay their subscription fees which I will never do until they offer family subs.

    -or-

WOD has its own website for viewing activities recorded with WOD :) I'd happily pay a subscription for this ability.
A couple of questions too:
  1. Is it possible to delete data fields? I don't need a map screen with 3 data fields below it. One is enough for me.
  2. Downloading map tiles. How large an area does this support?
  3. Import routes from plotaroute or elsewhere via TCX or GPX. Am I missing something or can this not be done?

1. Yes, in app
2. You can download as much area as you want. One time downloads are only limited. You download a larger piece of the map piece by piece
3. Import works. Upload your gpx (not tcx) to icloud and then import it via WOD app. It doesnt work if you want to import gpx from local iphone memory.

Thanks for buying the app. To address your points:

1) I am planning to add a "compromise" turn by turn solution which will do exactly as you describe: give turn by turn instructions if the route contains them. I call it a compromise solution because the ideal solution would be giving TBT for all routes, but that would require me to pay someone, which doesn't fit the current business model. This is high on my To-Do list but probably not in the next version, which is focussed on Stryd.

2) I am not quite sure what you mean by support for offline maps, but the app allows you to use the maps when the watch is offline.

3) At the moment you can export to Garmin via TCX or GPX files. Garmin do not offer an official way for apps to directly upload workouts to their systems (unlike Strava). It is possible for an app to programmatically manipulate the Garmin Connect website, but that is hacky and subject to being broken if they change the site. If they ever add an official (and free) way to upload to their systems then I will look into including it.

I am just one guy who writes apps and doesn't know much about websites so it is unlikely that there will ever be a WOD website for viewing workouts. It would also mean going up against Strava and the like, which doesn't interest me even if I could do it. My main focus is on giving the best experience possible on the watch during a workout.

And for your questions:

1) There is no real concept of deleting fields. You can configure many different screen layouts in the app, although none of them involve just one field below the map. You could set the other fields to be blank, but the screen space would just be wasted.

2) As @Maryn says you can download as much as you want but there is a limit for how much you can download in one go. This is because I have to pay for every map tile that is downloaded and without the limit I would not be able to only charge a one-off payment for the app.

3) Importing GPX files should work fine. Occasionally there are issues with iOS when people import in less common ways but I usually suggest emailing the GPX file to the iPhone or simply downloading it from Safari.

I hope that helps.

Examples of websites that offer downloadable OSM maps for running etc:

garmin.openstreetmap.nl or talkytoaster.me.uk

I know they're labelled Garmin but there are other sites that allow you to download the same and it saves you having to pay Mapbox or whoever you use to provide your tiles.

I'd rather manually download and install one big OSM map that covers a wider area than required than having to do it whenever I change my running direction :)

The app is written for vector maps in a certain format. I don't have any plans to write a map renderer for other formats. Sorry about that.

+1 here. Swiping while running is cumbersome. While swimming even more ?

Hi cfc, is there any way to get around the AOD only displaying the time? I don’t have rise wrist motion turned on and I always have to tap my watch to see my stats.

This is a restriction of watch os. Apple doesn’t allow third party developers to display an active screen when the watch is in always on mode

That’s a disgrace to apps that are better than apple’s own. I’ll make a shortcut to activate wake on wrist rise then. Cumbersome.

Unfortunately not. As @andrewstirling says this is controlled by Apple who do not let us use the AOD. If they allow it in the future then I will change the app to use it.

The always on display is really under utilised in my opinion. Most of the in built apps fail to support it as well. I think it’s only the watch face and the activity app? But it should wake on wrist raise already.... can’t see why you’d need a shortcut

Because wake on wrist raise is standard shut off. I can’t stand the screen waking whenever I move my arm or do a movement.

Add my vote for digital crown use for screen swiping. And by the way - your app is phenomenal and everyone should have it on their watch. There is no better fitness app! And your continued support and help here is amazing too! Thanks!

I have added four new shortcut gestures for rotating the crown up and down both with and without a map visible. This will be in the next version. I also added a couple of new commands for zooming in and out so the default is that the app will work as it does at the moment.

In this screenshot I have changed the commands for rotating the crown when no map is shown to change screens:

I have also added a new 'shake' gesture, to see how that works.
