Wow, after that keynote I am totally let down by Apple for the last time. We were told last year that a refresh was supposed to be for iOS 12 but was pushed to iOS 13 to make room for performance improvements. Now that the keynote is over and the big takeaway is freaking Dark Mode, like that was the most requested item. No homescreen changes, no icon updates. Incoming calls still take up the whole phone as do Facetime calls. No multitasking on the Plus or Max iphones. Like they spent 20 mins are freaking Minecraft? The updated security Im sure is a welcome from the news of breaches. It says you can now sign in with Apple. Apple is just trying to hide the fact they wont be sharing with Google but they will still have access to peoples data. So for people to think they are safe from all tech companies then you must be blind. They finally added swipe to text. Android only has had that since day 1. Faster performance, like seriously, you build one of the fastest chips on the market and you are now only supporting 6s and up. Whos slow? The only thing keeping people on iphones is seriously iMessage. Seriously people know they have better features for the money on other phones like Samsung, Oneplus, etc yet your all now blinded that Apple is the best. Where is Jony Ive? Doesn't he still work at apple?

Sir this is a Wendy’s.

I had to add the neighbor’s android phone to her car yesterday. Now there’s some non-intuitive stuff right there. Just putting in her 4 digit passcode was difficult - you have to press a weird enter key tucked into the keypad. The settings was hidden in a folder and the 3 directional keys (back? Enter? something else?) really got in the way of simply getting into the bluetooth settings. It seemed like it had the same grid of apps as an iphone so I’m missing the customization argument.

The android OS has convenient search bar for the internet (granted it's Google), an app drawer, it displays the address and time on the home page and it's nice and large, it displays more apps on the page, and you can move apps or app folders wherever you want on the home page. That's just off the top of my head.

That being said, I don't disagree with what you're saying. I bought an older model car that had an updated audio system installed by whoever owned it before. I couldn't get my android phone to work, so I now have an iPhone and it worked perfectly. Also, I have an 11 year old son and use the Find My Friend feature all of the time.

So understand, I'm not arguing that I hate the iPhone and won't use it or something, I'm just asking for Apple to make some simple changes with the iPhone home screen and I can't believe they didn't really do much AGAIN! Is this literally the best they can do in 10 years?

Why don’t those who seem to really dislike what Apple has done or is doing with their upcoming iOS updates just switch to a non apple device(s). I was happy with the recent WWDC, and it’s announcements. Not sure why some people expect the reinventing of the wheel.

If android seems to be going in the direction that some of you feel is the correct one, then switch?

My intention is to not offend anyone.

Because some, like me, are heavily invested in the Apple eco-system, and generally do like Apple kit. And I don’t think, correct me if I’m wrong, that anyone is asking for a reinvented wheel, rather, some iterative updates to the home screen UI. It is pretty much the same stagnant design we were first shown 11 years ago.

People whined incessantly for their stupid dark mode and Apple delivered, so they do listen and change things up.

It’s unlikely Apple will ever change the basic look of the home screen. It’s iconic and makes it easily identifiable as an iPhone, Just as Mercedes is never going to change their hood ornament, it’s basic marketing.

Same for customization. Apple could have designed iOS with it from the start, but chose not to for whatever reason was behind their design goals. Changing now, again removes an integral aspect af what makes an iPhone. Consider what happened when Microsoft took away the star button in Windows for example. I’m not trying to argue that customizable screens are bad, they are in themselves probably very useful for some people. They’re just not something that fits in with design goals.

The other reason change is unlikely is that iPhone, and smartphones in general, are in the mature phase of the product lifecycle. At this point change is likely small and incremental with the goal of stealing market share. Its why Google and Apple keep cribbing features from each other’s products.

The huge change some are clamoring for isn’t going to happen with iPhone, but whatever comes next. Just how smartphones did with features phones.

I like all what you say, but this part is the tip of the cake. Being iconic and easily identifiable is super important for marketing.

And I have grown past the age where customisability is something that can swing my next purchase decision a lot. I don’t even change my home screen layout on my iPhone and app collections often, knowing that “in this folder, the google maps will always be here for me to use”. I still download apps from time to time, but I would prefer keeping the icon where it was.

People will say “give us the option to make it look more personal”. All I can say is maybe in Apple’s mind, a customisable home screen is not considered as making the device “more personal”. After 12 years, icon grid layout has become a staple whenever I skim through someone’s phone home screen, knowing that guy is using an iPhone.

...and it still works. I don't need innovation on the home screen any more than I need innovation in doorknobs. I like it when things work.

Of course it still works, that’s obvious. But, does that mean it shouldn’t allow more customisation? And just because you’re happy with it, which is great, there are others, like me, whom would like to be able to mix it up a little.

When the op puts one his first major complaints as being they didn’t change any of the app icons... I have to seriously question what he finds important vs what I find important and if the two lines would ever meet.

And who cares if they don’t? Both opinions are just as valid and as important as each other aren’t they?

Everyone has different priorities. Mine are no doubt not the same as yours but that doesn’t mean mine are any more important than yours

You are correct in that neither opinion is more important or more valid than the other... but given Apple's history of not changing the overall design of the user interface in iOS, it was a bit presumption to expect that they would change it for iOS 13. Again, my opinion, but I really believe that the best predictor of future behavior is past, relevant behavior.

At least they could have added a app drawer with a toggle like the default S10 launcher or any other launcher from 2010. I am tired of folders on a phone like a XS.
When I had an Android, the app drawer was far and away the most annoying feature. Quick search and good folder organization eliminate any need for a clumsy app drawer. If newer versions allow you to turn that off without loading a clunky third-party launcher, that would be a step forward.

My iPhone home screen has one panel (plus the widgets panel to the left). I have everything organized into 16 folders by category, with 7 of my most often used apps on the bottom 3 rows (including the toolbar).

Here’s an idea: do what Windows does and allow users to hide home screen icon/folders. That way those who want to see a clean home screen with just wallpaper could do so. Just leave the dock for common used apps or a launcher that would bring up the most used apps. More often than not when I need to quickly launch an app I swipe down on the screen and type the app name in the search bar (or just tap the app icon if it’s one listed).

You can delete pretty much all the stock apps now, between that, folder organisation and using multiple home screens, you can do pretty much all that.

Of course it would be easier to just check a box in settings. On my Windows laptop I just right click on the desktop and check hide desktop icons.

I am excited for this iOS13 update and after seeing this 40+ min video of so many features not mentioned in the keynote - I'm even more excited. That's just me.

I watched this the other night. Holy cow. The keynote made it seem as if some of the upgrades I was interested in were only for the iPad, such as the editing gestures.
