Wow, after that keynote I am totally let down by Apple for the last time. We were told last year that a refresh was supposed to be for iOS 12 but was pushed to iOS 13 to make room for performance improvements. Now that the keynote is over and the big takeaway is freaking Dark Mode, like that was the most requested item. No homescreen changes, no icon updates. Incoming calls still take up the whole phone as do Facetime calls. No multitasking on the Plus or Max iphones. Like they spent 20 mins are freaking Minecraft? The updated security Im sure is a welcome from the news of breaches. It says you can now sign in with Apple. Apple is just trying to hide the fact they wont be sharing with Google but they will still have access to peoples data. So for people to think they are safe from all tech companies then you must be blind. They finally added swipe to text. Android only has had that since day 1. Faster performance, like seriously, you build one of the fastest chips on the market and you are now only supporting 6s and up. Whos slow? The only thing keeping people on iphones is seriously iMessage. Seriously people know they have better features for the money on other phones like Samsung, Oneplus, etc yet your all now blinded that Apple is the best. Where is Jony Ive? Doesn't he still work at apple?

You must've watched a different keynote than the one I watched. This was the biggest keynote, with the most significant and compelling updates that I've seen in many years.

I'm just waiting for beta 2 or 3 to come out before putting it on my devices ... can't wait!

I had to add the neighbor’s android phone to her car yesterday. Now there’s some non-intuitive stuff right there. Just putting in her 4 digit passcode was difficult - you have to press a weird enter key tucked into the keypad. The settings was hidden in a folder and the 3 directional keys (back? Enter? something else?) really got in the way of simply getting into the bluetooth settings. It seemed like it had the same grid of apps as an iphone so I’m missing the customization argument.

Android users can choose to have no apps on the home screen as well as their choice of launchers. One android can look and function completely different than the next (swipes v. Buttons, etc.) due to the various “skins” the manufacturer uses or one chosen by the owner. I prefer IOS, but wish the home screen was this customizable. Apple doesn’t want these mistaken for anything but an iPhone apparently.

Operating system updates shouldn't be sexy or flashy. They should feature:
1) Usablity for everyone - changing the UI dramatically will result in a lot of frustrated users,
2) Improvements to security & performance - just look at the mess over on the Android side with apps crippling phones with adware,
3) Feature improvements and enhancements - add features as technology, security, and reliability allow

Once you realize that keeping the status quo is preferrable over breaking and confusing things, you won't be disappointed by any software updates. Come on, Android hasn't added anything dramatic either, and it takes years for updates to land on all phones. Look what happened when Windows rethought their design (Windows 8)!

Y'all need some chill. Apple isn't going to be flashy here - they have to maintain solid, usable software.

Please please stop going on about Apple maps... No gimmicky AR feature is going to save it (And yes, google maps has all of the AR implementation now as well). Do you drive much? If you did you would know how bad it is compared to google maps.

Apple Maps Street View: Notice the 3 businesses on the left represented by the pink and yellow icons? You can click on any of those to get info on the business while IN Apple Maps street view (hours, phone number, pics, yelp reviews). I just checked my friend's latest Android phone and google street view does NOT have that feature so you're wrong.

"Do you drive much?" I live in Los Angeles, my daily commute to just work alone is 32 miles with traffic.

I've tested Apple Maps side by side with Waze and Google Maps and all 3 apps have given me proper ETA's and used the same routes over all.

Google Maps:

What I like:
  • The ability to add stops along your route
  • knowing how long you are going to be stuck in traffic
  • the music app integration it offers (not a fan of what they did recently though. too many taps to get back).
  • iOS travel times widget
what I don't like:
  • Sometimes I have to drive half a block for Google Maps to figure out what direction I'm headed
  • Sometimes Google offers me a faster/alternate route but it does on such short notice that often times I just miss it.
Waze:

what I like
  • users reporting traffic, objects on roads, cops hiding etc.
what I don't like
  • Ads: No, I don't want to stop by Carl's Jr. for a burger I have somewhere to be
  • Aggressive routing: So you want me to exit the freeway, go down some side street, turn to another side street and get back on the freeway to save 5 min? No thanks.

Apple Maps
what I like:
  • No hiccups in the display when navigating. Smooth.
  • Sharing ETA with others using iMessage (new in iOS13, no 3rd party required)
  • Apple Street view is a nice added feature.
What I don't like:
  • Apple uses frequent locations to guess where you intend to go and gives you the ETA. I'd rather see an ETA for predefined locations like Google maps offers.

Has the OP not seen the Android Q update?! Talk about a total letdown

Literally Google only nightlight three things at I/O dark mode, “better” privacy, also better location control (which iOS has had forever) and supposedly faster updates with the phone not having to reboot (which Google promises with Android O) LOL.

Yeah but iOS 13 is seriously underwhelming.
Thanks for making me laugh, Google and privacy in the same sentence, what a joke!

For those saying why not use Messenger or WhatsApp, try end to end encryption that is missing from both of them. Also friends on Android use them in my presence and I’m forever listening to messages not received (either in a timely fashion or at all) or conversations where it’s always cutting out or just completely unintelligible. This is in the same locations and network that I happily use iMessage and FaceTime on with no problem at all. Added to which I would never let 3rd party apps access my Contacts or other information on my phone.

Personally I wouldn’t consider new icons to be an upgrade at all - also not bothered about being able to organise home screen or dark mode. I like the look of iOS13, especially allowing both Sims (on dual Sim phones) access to iMessage and (hopefully) FaceTime.

OP got his big thread, if not the level of support he may have been seeking.

The internet version of "15 minutes of fame", no doubt.

@gwhizkids nailed it... after 12 releases, the OS has matured... any new enhancements will pale by comparison.
[doublepost=1559757492][/doublepost]And for all the hate on Memoji, isn't it just possible that Apple is using some childish schtick to prototype something in the future? Maybe something creative? Maybe something that will turn into sone key piece of AR or something even beyond that? I see it as "proof of concept" that has a fun application in the current.

Good post. You obviously took some time to illustrate your point.

Google maps has pretty good eta implementation with a live, updated view of the traveler in the app.

I don’t understand this. Why are you acting as if he or anyone who posts cares about how big their thread gets? Talk about childish.

Very thorough and well thought out response. Much better than "Your answer sux" (and no, not accusing anyone in this thread on that, but just a general observation on how some of these discussions go sometimes....)

I believe I've heard Rene Ritchie, on Vector, the iMore Show or MacBreak Weekly (hey, I drive a lot!) refer to the animojis/memojis as ways of getting people used to the idea/means of motion capture-like technology. Then, when the A/R games and other apps come out, there won't be as steep a learning curve. It also would't surprise me if there wasn't some analytic data going back the other way on the accuracy of capture.

I think at least for the iPad it’s the biggest release since the introduction of the first ipad.

People can use their iPad now like a real laptop, with all the benefits of a tablet, completely silent, fast, secure, easy to backup etc..

I'm ok with people venting, as long as its respectful. Everyone has their own set of expectations. Some more realistic than others. But its ok to have aspirations.

Where its not ok is when it devolves into "Apple is stupid"; "people who like X are stupid" and the like. Apple is a company with vast but finite resources, the 2 most constrained of which are humans with the skill to work on this and time. The first is limited by the pool of qualified software engineers and the second is absolutely constrained. Add to this, Apple's rational desire to save some features for the future. So, they are not stupid and users are not stupid for thinking that the features rolled out this week are good in and of themselves, even if some preferred feature was not implemented or did not make the cut.

I would suspect any other major changes/advancements would be saved for the keynote where they demo this year’s new phones. There is always more that isn’t revealed at WWDC.

I wonder also how much the lack of “wow” is due to leaks of features. We had people complaining about the implementation of Dark Mode before it was even formally introduced by Apple.

The constant leaks, and the life cycle of the product (maturing) ... are definitely factors that leave people less "wow'd" ... however, I'm happy with iOS 13, there are definitely features that will be used by myself. A number of new features in iOS 12 I didn't use. And iPadOS seems to be quite a step forward.

No notch would be nice in this years new models. Maybe Apple has found a way to at least bury the notch under the screen leaving just a few holes, like that Android phone (can't remember the model but I think it's a samsung).

I still don’t really know what the major features outside dark mode, Apples own data tracking vs social media/google, and the performance upgrades yet again.
The privacy issue is not whether it's Apple or Google or Facebook who knows things about you; it's about what the third parties whose services you're signing into know about you.

When a third-party app or website has "Sign in with Google/Facebook," they scrape a lot of personal info from your Google/Facebook profiles, like your email address, interests, friends, location, etc. I shouldn't have to explain why this is bad.

"Sign in with Apple" won't give these third parties this amount of personal data, and won't even give them your real email address if you don't want it to.

Sure people have the right to express their opinions but every year there's a thread like this and then when the new iphone comes you get the 'iPhone something is a total letdown' thread. People always have something to complain, it could be the best software/hardware ever and people still will make a thread about how it's a total letdown.

Here's an article about how that google secretary 'feature' is working a year after they've launched it and it was only launched for restaurant reservations and hasn't been updated for anything more as of right now.

https://www.theverge.com/2019/5/22/...uman-callers-25-percent-ai-restaurant-booking

I didn't mean the service that reserves a table for you, I meant actually answering your phone for you...

I totally understand all of this... so the obvious question is "why would third party sites use 'Sign In with Apple'?" There is no advantage to them at all - just like ApplePay, they get the connection (cash in the case of ApplePay) with none of the ancillary data.

Will Apple require the "Sign In with Apple" for any app that also uses the "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Facebook"? it would appear to me that would be the only way they would allow it - and give up all that mineable data. I love the idea of "Sign In with Apple" and the added security, I just don't see the upside for the third party apps/websites/services.

Some food for thought. Many many year ago you made the choice to use Apple as a brand in your hand. You still have that choice. Google, Microsoft all give you that choice as well.

Yes features that were out many many years ago on other platforms, but do they work well?? serious question. Android OS has issues with it's features all the time. But some fail to mention this when comparing....

Apple pretty much has stated they won't provide a feature or service until they get it right. And this is what they have done countless time. Touch ID, Face ID, rather than past issues with other platforms who brought it first but failed over all.

Dark Mode, as simple as it may seem, Apple wanted to get it right, not listening to us users, but they had dark mode for the past 2 iterations of iOS. But we never knew it because I am sure the internal testing team said “not yet”., but I am sure it just was not what they wanted to release until now. And I am not talking of inverted colors. Apple is surely working on iOS 14 already.

Heck look at the new Mac. 2 years in the making.....

Why change what works for 89% percent of users. Not many really care about design and icons, they want to click and go. It's about what the device does or the app does, not what it looks like, that would count for about 5% of most users honestly.

I think bottom line you had a lot of things in mind that you only wanted and didn't please you. Which is fine, that is why choosing Apple or any other brand is a choice. You can chose to use what ever you want, what ever device you want.

Sure take up Android and have a top line phone, then something else comes out and support or updates are dropped very very quickly. Yes it's happened many times already... How far back does certain Android OS's go back for support?

3-4-5 years of OS support for a new OS release from Android, even flag ship devices get booted.

Since Apple has disappointed, let me recap the thrilling changes to Android Q (7 of the top 15 new features compiled by AndroidCentral):
  • Better privacy controls
  • Dark mode
  • Native screen recording
  • App info page now shows more information
  • Sharing shortcuts let you easily share content
  • Easy Wi-Fi sharing with QR Codes
  • New modes for foldable phones

Don't get too excited! I know how many people have been clamoring for shareable QR codes.

One of the best features this year imo ... I never use those facebook/google sign in's ... nice to see Apple making privacy an important factor for their consumers.

No upside for companies that want your data. There are plenty of developers that love this
