I really love the new design of Yosemite, and I actually wish they would push the translucency even further.

Part of the visual appeal of Yosemite is to please users of Microsoft Windows

Around a month before Yosemite was released:

… easing potential switches from Windows …

Recently:

As a new Mac user, I like Yosemite, having used Windows, (still will), for many years found Yosemite easy to use and so far no problems.

I wonder what percentage of newcomers to OS X (to Yosemite in particular) finds it nice-looking because of Yosemite's similarities to Microsoft Windows.

I came to Mac in 2011 with the Mac Air running Lion. At that point basically 90% were complaining about Lion in favor of Snow Leopard. Some say even today Snow Leopard is still the best OS for Mac, I saw it at my friends and I liked my Lion better. Then I bought Mountain Lion, but never installed it since I was afraid it would not perform as wel as Lion did. Maveriks came even for free, but I did again not jump for it. Yesemite however caught my eye in terms of design, but actually it was the interface with iOS that made me upgrade. It is just awesome and finally on time OSX and iOS are connected in the way Yosemite and iOS8 provide it to us. For me handoff is a huge thing, even though my 2011 is not officially supported. (I did run the terminal solution found here in the forum and it works like a charm). Airdrop is nice and the UI of Yosemite is definately faster than Lion. The downside are currently a few bugs and a longer boot time for Yosemite compared to Lion, but all in all I am happy with it and it is great we get it for free from Apple! Period.

Yosemite is a visual orgy, I love it; it's the most gorgeous feast I've had yet working on my Mac! Even Mavericks is akin to the darker iOS 1-6.

Having started out with OS X Lion, I just can't imagine how anyone can say that anything was better before Lion. There have been so many great additions to the use of a Mac, such as share sheets, Spotlight, AirDrop, etc. that even Snow Leopard seems like the dark times.

I've enjoyed seeing Apple throw so many great features into OS X in the past few versions, and now having such a great interface now underscores my feelings to stay on the Mac platform!

Are the design and feel more enjoyable on Mac than on iPad and iPhone?

… more than iOS8.

Please, can you explain why the design and feel of OS X Yosemite are more enjoyable than the design and feel of iOS 8?

To you, do both operating systems have the same design and feel, and are those two aspects better suited to Mac hardware than to iPad and iPhone hardware?

I love how Yosemite looks. I use Dark Mode all the time tho.

It feels as fast as Mavericks, except for the startup time, which I feel a little bit slower.

Making sense

I prefer the designs of pre iOS 7 because it was not only consistent but made sense like … you still don't know if the shift or caps key is on. I have an iPad 3 still running iOS 5 and still like the design. I've gotten used to the look of iOS 7 but it has it's share of performance issues even when it was released for the iPad Air.

That said I do like Yosemite and the look of the OS. I know it sounds contradictory but I guess i've been using OS X since 2001 and the fresh coat of paint looks nice to me. I like some of the new features as well and surprisingly enough it runs better on my 2012 Mac Mini than ML or Mavs. Go figure.

I find nothing contradictory in those observations. They make perfect sense.

People learn in different ways. Use cases differ. Environments and hardware choices differ. One person's saccades may be unexpectedly, very different from those of another person.

A Mac is not an iPad, is not an iPhone. And so on.

I'm surprised by the strong negative feelings some have. … I immediately liked the dark look. …

I do like dark interfaces. However with Yosemite, a dark menu bar and dark Dock had the undesirable effect of making excessively bright things elsewhere appear even brighter.

I love the look of Yosemite. The 3D/Aqua thing was getting old and needed to go. Not to mention Lucida Grande. The new font is way more slick. Having said that, I have some minor gripes:

- I don't wish to use the Dark theme, but I do like my wallpapers dark. Problem is, with the normal theme you get black dots under the icons of running apps and they're barely visible on dark wallpaper. I would've preferred the Dark theme had it been light grey on dark grey, Adobe CC style, but blazing white on very very dark grey just looks crude, like those high-contrast color schemes for people with cataracts. Gives the menu bar an 'urgent' look, like it wants my full attention.

- The blur effect on the login screen – they went for the blurriest blur of all blurs, didn't they – looks terrible with some wallpapers. Dark grey with some ugly blob behind the text and text fields. I use one nicked from iOS, it's black with a star field and some swirly galaxy in the middle. On the login screen it looks like the text is floating in a bowl of radioactive snot.

- The three window controls in the top left corner are so dark with the Graphite appearance that the symbols that show up when you hover over them drown in those backgrounds. Looks crisp enough on a bright rMBP/iMac LED screen, but on a TV or an LCD screen that's a few years old, you can't make out the symbols. I know what the buttons do so it's OK to fly blind, except some apps don't do fullscreen so the third button is a surprise button - could be a plus sign or two triangles, click to find out.

Dock: the running application indicator is difficult to see

… with the normal theme you get black dots under the icons of running apps and they're barely visible on dark wallpaper. …

Seven years ago, a comparable problem before the release of Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard):

rdar://5294400 – Duplicate/5240819 – Running Application Indicator Difficult to See

Anuba: in your feedback to Apple, you might mention Radar reference 5240819. The system now is quite different, but the principle is the same: visual indicators should be reasonably visible in all normal situations.

Yosemite and the new pages program question

I have been hearing that after using Yosemite pages needs to be upgraded too. But after the upgrade old documents created in older versions of pages won't work. Any comments on this issue would be appreciated. I am still using Maverick but plan on the upgrade after a few fixes.

It is a month I am having my Mac (I did 1 week of Mavericks and Yosemite until now).
I am totally new to Apple's hemisphere.

So far I did a clean installation of Yosemite at the Store.
So far so good. I barely remember Mavericks I had it for such a short term that all I know about Macbooks refers to Yosemite.

I am coming from Windows and I had a iphone 4s (for 6 months). Ok very close to the mobile. Very user friendly. I even prefer this dock than the Mavericks' one, that was too animated and too far from being professional.

The switch from Windows was ok, except the CTRL+X function missing that has been a bloody issue for the first weeks.

It would probably depend on the file format you saved the document in. I always chose .doc even when using Pages just bc if i shared with others, they more than likely were using Microsoft Word.

I installed yosemite on my 2012 macbook air, and it looks awesome. I am in love with the new look. It gave a well needed refresh to my macbook. I'm using it with the dark mode enabled, and I love it. I had zero problems so far, everything works! Even Mail. haha

My issue with Dark Mode is how all the other applications look. All the other apps are predominantly white/light grey. iTunes, Safari, iMessage, etc.

haha, the random "Toxic Hellstew" cracked me up for some reason way more than it should have.

Yup, which is the very reason I don't use it. I'd much prefer an overall dark-gray type of look, effective on all applications, rather than just the menubar. Dark mode makes it look out of place imo.

I keep two versions of Pages on an iMac that family members use. Since nobody else uses my MBP, I updated it to the newest version and I don't have any problems with older documents even with the latest version of Pages.

The way around the problem for the time being, if you are concerned, is to keep the older version and the new one and use them as you wish.

Abbal, thanks for your comments. I don't like losing functionality and software compatibility just because a product is updating. Keep whats working, and add a few more acceptable bells and whistles.

Mavericks is no longer beautiful

My Christmas confession:

I actually don't classify Yosemite as beautiful per se.
But after using it quite often, I'm getting used to it.
Even worse, I no longer prefer the look of Mavericks.

I don't know if I "prefer" the look of Mavericks, but it's a lot more consistent and certainly much less rough around the edges. Also a lot less stuff about it looks like lazy designwork.

I'm not really sure why (as I wasn't the greatest fan of Yosemite's UI in the beginning, still find much to criticize about it, and used to love much of Apple's older OS X UI), but I can hardly stand that look anymore. Was rather annoyed by all the glossiness when forced to use Snow Leopard recently.
