OMG this is a beast of a thread.

At first look, I hated the look of Yosemite. My knee jerk reaction was that Apple took OS X off a cliff. The dock looked horrible and everything seemed washed out. My hope was that I could tolerate it until Apple fixed an obvious fatal flaw. Well, time goes by. Working with Yosemite betas for awhile on one computer and now release version on 3 computers (MBPr, MPA, older MBP), I really like the look and feel. In fact, I prefer it to Mavericks. I think I initially fell into the old trap where what I didn't like was that it was different, only to realize that when I let it be different, I actually liked it. Conclusion at this point: Yosemite look and feel is a positive change.

I think the buttons and general controls look like placeholders. Compare XCode 5 on Mavericks to XCode 6 on Yosemite. The white buttons and controls look bad. The information panel looks like a button. The eight icons on the left that change the mode of the panel are harder to visually parse due to being outlines instead of fills.

It used to look polished and elegant. Now it looks like a rough wireframe layout.

Your knee jerk reaction was the correct one. It IS ugly. I've done as much as I can all weekend to fix it. From changing the volume sound back to adding in Mavericks & iOS6 icons to whatever I could to make it look at least slightly better.
Yes I am still on iOS6 fan so I love my leather, and felt, and all the rest so I hate the new font and pastel colors and may be majorly biased. But the iOS should've been left alone or made to look like Mavericks not make Yosemite look like those terrible iOS 7 & 8 disasters.
It's a shame because for as ugly as they all are to have to look at and deal with daily the features added in the iOS and Yosemite are fantastic. All we need to do is get rid of Jony Ive and have someone fix the look of them. Or at least allow us to skin all of them to look better.

I agree this new OS looks like sh**.

I cannot stand to look at this crap. I do not want to take out my phone or turn on my computer and hear 3 finger snaps.

No one I know likes it. No on wants white on white on gray on white with pastel neon sh** colors, flat un-dementional cheap icons, obnoxious fonts, oh and the lame dock.

I will do what I can to change everything. Every folder, every icon, all of the white point. I won't stop until I remove Ive's finger snaps from every aspect of the OS. ;)

Don't go to a different OS, just turn into a GUI pirate and change the sh** out of it.

To the rest of you on here, you who like this crap are the minority living in a inner city surrounded by yuppy liberals.

Fetch is FU as well.

When I click on "Put" to upload files, the menu that pops up is too big; the Cancel and Put buttons are behind the Dock! (You can still click on the top of the buttons, though.)

Yes, you can hide the Dock and see the buttons, but still, didn't ANYONE at Apple try out the menus with the Dock in visible mode?

Give it another week and you'll all be used to it and happy.

So many knee jerk reactions in here. Not many people like forced change (it is forced because you obviously download the OS X updates).

I've been beta testing it for 4 months, and I'm still not used to it... :p

It's just another pile of crap from the Cook-Ive camp...

In OS X Yosemite all toolbar items have the same background. IMO that makes things more consistent, not less. I actually prefer the OS X Yosemite shot you provided. The OS X Mavericks shot just looks messy to me.

Funny how these changes grow on you and the whole thing reverses.

I couldn't stand the new "flat" look of iOS7 or Yosemite until I'd used them for a bit. Now I'm used to them I like them (though I do still think some of the brightly coloured icons are a bit gaudy), and when I look at iOS6 or Mavericks now those seem ugly and dated. iOS6 in particular hasn't aged well. It reminds me of when I was irritated at the pinstripes being taken off OS X, then looking back on it now it looks old and horrible.

Happens with everything of course, PC interfaces, clothes, cars, etc. Just one of those psychological things - past styles tend to look terrible through some kind of "dated feel".

Yosemite just looks lifeless and totaly dull, and I do not want my computer to look like it is trying to imitate a mobile phone or tablet, if I want either I will buy either.

Lion & Mavericks were two steps too far for me, but I will be staying with Mavericks for the foreseeable future, then I expect it will be bye bye Apple OS and hello Linux.

Why don't they give you a choice? This would make everyone happy... well most everyone. Right now this thing is Butt-Ugly. Been using it since Beta 4 and still hate it. I think when Flavors for Yosemite comes out I WILL be using it. Just Butt-Ugly!

This pretty much sums up my experience as well. Now that's I've used it for a while I like it more and more. I reduced the translucency and increased contrast and it made it look like a different system.
Safari runs SO much better than Mavericks it's not even close. My 2011 Mac is running better than it ever did on Mavericks.
I am surprised that a 3 year old machine isn't compatible with some of the new features but so be it. I have a 17" 2011 MBP and love that size.

Overall I've had a total change of mind on Yosemite and am loving it. But it did take some adjustments, and some time.

The only time I notice any "ugliness" is in safari really when I look at the tabs bar. They are square and have thin lines like some technical drawing. Not sure I like that. Apart from that I hardly ever see the dock as its hidden and I'm working away swiping four fingers between desktops.

Mac OS X's photorealistic interface and icons with those "lickable" elements just haven't translated well to Retina and larger screens in general. I remember how nice and realistic all those icons looked in 2001. Back then I couldn't imagine we would ever need bitmaps larger than 128 x 128 pixels. Hell, Windows XP's icon files didn't go beyond 48 x 48 pixels.

But as screen size increased those 128 x 128 pixel icons weren't up for the job anymore. So Apple increased them to 512 x 512 pixels. On Mac OS X Leopard it became apparent for the first time those photorealistic icons didn't look so photorealistic as they used to. After the second increase - all the way up to 1024 x 1024 pixels to accommodate Retina resolutions - the 2001 icons were starting to look fake.

Personally I think that's the main reason why Apple went from detailed icons to a more simpler look. It's almost impossible to maintain the same level of realism at those large sizes simply because you see too much. So why even bother?

I'm all for upgrading and obviously that usually means new features and in this case that's true, Call/Text = Awesome...

But what's the most annoying is this flattened clean look they're achieving. The contrast on the finder windows is so much i'm having to squint to make out which folders to look at. Soo much white vs cyan folders are driving me mad (when you're looking at 400 little cyan blocks ), as I live and breath through finder when opening and closing art server files constantly at work (designer).

Really that's the biggest issue so far, besides the little black triangles that appear when you're changing volume like it's a failed drop shadow (below). Turning on the actual contrast in the menu just outlines everything which makes everything look even worse. What are we to do?

What the hell are those?

Give me the features and leave me the look of Maverick. I'm sure this is still under the tweaking phase but maybe someones found some way to tone down the dramatic visuals of Yosemite and just make it a little more tame on the eyes.

Luckily for Adobe products we're at least able to change the menu and interface color for those, where as in Outlooks case, Yosemite just washed that guy out. That's also on Microsoft though cause they've yet to make any improvements on Outlook for mac since '11, but that's off topic.

Enjoy.

I'm currently going through an internal battle trying to decide whether or not to update. As an early adopter I feel like I need to, but I, like you, really dislike the new design. Maybe I'll install on a partition to play around with and see if it grows on me.

Probably what I ought to do as well. Maybe even take one of my dual-drive minis and install it on the secondary drive.

Yosemite looks terrible!

HORRIBLE!!BUTT UGLY!! Windows all over again. After I got the final release I got cDock and changed the dock back to 3d. I'm going to make more changes. If I have to use 3rd party apps to do it I will. I hid most of the apps just so I wouldn't have to look at them. Yosemite is eating 99% of my ram. Everything about this OS is totally unacceptable.

This is failure on so many levels that its insane.
The main reason for this company to exist was deep understanding of design. Deep. I repeat it again. Deep. Bauhaus aesthetic. Functional thinking. Science of ergonomic and importance of creating emotional and organic experience. Now everything is ****ed up from inside. Main priority is to be marketable and to stay profitable. For me UX and UI aesthetics of current os x is driven by marketing decisions without any logic. There is no innovation. How we have so much powerful GPUs and are committing to stupid idea of oversimplification of UI. Where is richness and depth? Where is new paradigm of interaction? Where is zoomable user interface with smart function? Nowhere. So long apple. Thank you Steve for making my computing functional and beautiful, rest in peace.

Instead of just complaining, I am trying to be proactive about the look of 10.10. Ive managed to change application icons, but no idea how to change anything else to resemble mavericks. Has anyone gotten anywhere with this? Specifically, Im looking to change the orbs (close, minimize, maximize) back to their beautiful glory.
