It's just another pile of crap from the Cook-Ive camp...

I agree. It's not as bad as the iOS 7 travesty, but it's certainly pretty bad.

Jony Ive should stick to hardware design. He understands that well. Graphic design for software user interfaces, though? He sucks at it. It's sad, really. I used to love the guy. Now I hope he quits Apple and stops effing everything up so badly.

I'll treat 'total flattening of a user interface' (a paraphrase) as undeniably bad in the context of OS X. From the accepted (and most popular) answer to What kind of design do users like the most at the time of this question, 'Flat' or 'Skeuomorphic'?

Flat and Skeuomorphic are neither mutually exclusive nor opposites. If you think they are, you are sorely mistaken.

You can have flat design that is also skeuomorphic, just as you can have flat design that is not skeuomorphic. And you can have full (non-flat) design that is skeuomorphic or is not skeuomorphic.

Example: iOS 8's flat green and white phone icon is every bit as skeuomorphic as a photograph of an old 1970s phone receiver (minus the cord). The key element to skeuomorphism is not the "realism" of it but the reference to an everyday object. iOS 8's flat green and white phone icons is both flat and skuomorphic.

No it isn't ****ing ugly.

You're right. I'd rather refer to it as hideous.

----------

Give it another week and you'll all be used to it and happy.

So many knee jerk reactions in here. Not many people like forced change (it is forced because you obviously download the OS X updates).

I've always hated these statements.

1.) We shouldn't have to "give it a week and be used to it and adjust/like it". It'll still look like crap.

2.) You're correct. We're not forced to download the updates but I have grudgingly done so for Yosemite, iOS 7 and 8 despite the ugly looks. Only because of some of the updated features and other things it offers. Sadly under the ugly look there's many great things it ads. It just doesn't need to look like it was designed by a 13 year old girl and feature all the flat icons and and pastel colors.

Do you comprehend the definition of opinions? Yosemite and iOS 8 look fan-****ing-tastic. What will you do about that huh? You CAN'T change my opinion, and don't try doing so.

Then don't bother changing other people's opinion about how ****ing ugly Yosemite is... You claimed other people trying to change your opinion, and yet you did the same especially on a thread that is dedicated to how bloody ugly and terrible Yosemite is...

Now go play yourself at the "Yosemite is beautiful" thread...

I have read in different forums that people are considering moving to windows because they dont like the new look of Yosemite, Ha Ha that is trully laughable and a pretty outlandish statement i personally find it very pleasing and refreshing to the old peepers.

Yeah, it's not like Windows 8.1's interface is even flatter. The desktop icon set Microsoft have in store for Windows 10 is terrible.

Been an apple fan for years now(29 years old) and I've got to say...iOS 7, iOS 8, and OS X Yosemite are all, by far, the ugliest OS's I've ever seen before in my life. It honestly feels like it was designed by a 12 year old girl and targeted only towards other 12 year old girls. If that was approach that Apple was going for, well...it worked.

My biggest complaint so far is the lack of sharpness in the text. It appears more gray then black and when on a white background is hard to read. I can't find a control to darken text. contrast control in System preferences/displays changes everything without specifically addressing text tone. Found this same trend in the current IOS for the phone. Maybe old eyes should not use mac.

Now go play yourself at the "Yosemite is beautiful" thread...

The thread titles reflect the posts though... In the "Yosemite is beautiful" discussion most people like the OS for its functionality and overall responsiveness/speed, but at the same time they do have critics regarding the UI - not that big of a deal. In this "Yosemite looks terrible" it's only about how "ugly" it looks and we're supposed to believe that it makes the OS experience awful and terrible, which imo is simply not true.

I have only two issues so far with the new UI: for me it's a bit too bright and I'm not quite sold on the font change (yet?). I think there are far too many non retina users out there and Yosemite's new Helvetica-Neue-Ultra-frikkin'-Thin is generally less pleasant to read than Lucida.

BUT... Other than that I'm very pleased and satisfied with Yosemite.

You see, this is something I don't really understand about you guys... You should be grateful that haters like us don't mess around in your "beautiful" thread trying to dispute or change your opinions about how beautiful Yosemite is with our UGLY and TERRIBLE vocabs.

Why can't you do the same here...? Respect those who dislike Yosemite and stay away...

If you do not believe that Yosemite UI is ugly and terrible, keep it to yourself and don't force your ideas on us because we do not subscribe to your opinions...

I guess this is what some people called extremism, by forcing your "praise Yosemite" or "praise Apple" ideology onto others. Or would you prefer us haters to start reinforcing our "ideology" on your beautiful thread...? I don't mind starting my own little Forstall-ism ideology onto you.

I tried changing the system fonts, using a script that someone made and TinkerTool. It still looked like ****.

I shouldn't have to change the fonts to make it legible on my screen.

Show me where I didn't respect those who dislike Yosemite. Did you read my post?

There seems to be a general consensus that the interface is hard to swallow for most of us, because EVEN IN THE "YOSEMITE IS BEAUTIFUL" thread, a lot of people are not quite fond of the UI, despite loving the OS as a whole. Hence the difference between "IS" and "LOOKS", which reflects on the posts, which was my point.

There are things that I like in Yosemite and things that I don't like. So I don't mind visiting the two threads, if that's ok with you of course.

I'm convinced the Yosemite UI makes me feel sick now when using my Macbook Air :(

Features love it, and thats the only reason i have not gone back to 10.8 or 10.9 (yet!).

I was never a Mac person EVER, always in the Windows camp, then a few years ago i saw the beautiful 3D Dock, i was like that looks so cool, so i bought my first Mac. There is no way I'm going back to Windows, but at the same time Yosemites UI is ugly!.

Need everyone who dislikes the UI to feedback to Apple this, they bought Photostream back from lots of feedback in iOS 8, so you never know, here is hoping for 10.11 https://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Just go back to Mavericks if you don't like Yosemite. Am I the only one that keeps backups and clones of their drives?

The way I look at it is this. It's sort of like a restaurant has come up with several meals. Some will think everything they have is great, others may like one but not another.

If you're like me and some of the apps you need are no longer supported in Yosemite, then it's like you're allergic to the food. You can't eat if even if you did like it.

Before anyone jumps on the Yosemite band wagon they should check and make sure they're apps will still work. I don't see Apple failing to support their own apps that are only a few years old as a plus. In fact, I'd say it's a good reason to stay completely away from Apple.

I actually needed Yosemite to run software tests.
After installing it, I lost all internet access (not at all the only one, thank you Apple), but I spent enough time in 10.10 to know I'll be glad to see my Mavericks TimeMachine backup running again.
Goodbye Yosemite crap.

Mavericks: good for fifteen- or sixteen-hour sessions. Yosemite: one or two at most.

… Yesterday: at the Mac with Mavericks for more than a few hours. Pretty much round the clock and beyond. I don't recommend spending so much time at a computer, but doing so with Mavericks is painless for me.

A comparable attempt with Yosemite would be literally painful, and I'm not alone …

Again, an observation on intolerance to Yosemite (compared to Mavericks):

… I can regularly pull a 15 or 16 hour session (yeh I know thats not ideal!) and pretty much 'zone out' anything that involves interacting with the OS during that from start to end; at a conscious level it just floats right in one eye and out the other :)

On 10.10, even when I'm not getting hit with something different that does make its way thru and ring an alarm bell, there's probably umpteen things being given a subconscious double take, so even if I'm not aware of it, my eyes are probably being worked all that much harder as my brain seeks its endless visual confirmations. About an hour or two is all I can manage.

Maybe that's why I really don't mind 'the look of it' in screen shots anywhere near as much as in actual use; I'm looking at a picture, my brain isn't kicking into 'using OSX' mode, my eyes aren't doing their usual constant scanning of every pixel on the screen etc. …
