I've been using my MBP on Monterey (12.0.1) for a while now and my computer isn't lagging anymore when I type. I am currently typing this message on said MBP using the iGPU.

That is great!

Probably this weekend I will update

Have you tried when low power mode is active?

For me it's not fixed.
Do you have any anti-malware apps, or parallels toolbox running in the background? I found that removing parallels toolbox helped.

Note: Text entry is more or less smooth now on iGPU, but bluetooth audio gets interrupted occasionally even on power (new problem)

Ok upgraded to Monterey, I would say typing is better but not yet perfect.

Also I want to try Low Power Mode and see what happens.

I will share my opinions after some days of work next week (heavy Scala development with IntelliJ, docker containers and stuff like that), both with external screen and without

Yeah, after a couple more days on Monterey, I can second this.
That being said, I've had enough and sold my MBP16. I am now running an M1 MacBook Air (alongside a desktop PC) and I can't even begin to describe how smooth this is compared to the 16". It's supposed to be the other way around, but Apple clearly doesn't give a s*** about Intel MacBooks.

Well, after one week I can say it may be a little bit better also when connecting the screen, it seems less noisy and warm

But with dynamic switching, it's a little bit better, sometimes no lag, sometimes yes.

My only concern is that it not at all a clean install, and I can't perform it right now, and so maybe it's worse and with a clean install will be better...

After 2 years of postponing it, I did a clean install and things are much better!

Edit: Monterey! @Azarias59

Wow, Monterey 12.0.1 beta and typing lag is 98% gone on macbook pro 16"
Yea, that placebo effect did not last for very long. Lag is back (internal keyboard). I can only do random things to make it better for awhile, like turning of wlan, bluetooth, looking videos as I type, or even moving mouse and typing with one hand at the same time (not very practical ?) makes a lag go away. Annoying bug. In some programs lag is much worse than others and for example when I type this message, there is no lag at all. Worst lag is in Pages.

It hasn't gone away and crops up regularly. I used bootcamp to load windows -- NO LAG! not a solution because Touch ID etc don't work on it

Edit: decreasing the refresh rate of the internal display helped, no lag at 48/50Hz

For me it is better with the macOS 12.1 On battery, automatic graphics switching on, low power mode enabled. While I am writing this text, I am experiencing some lag, but overall it feels a lot snappier especially in the terminal.

Edit: I have checked with low power mode disabled and lag returned. I think when low power mode is enabled it runs smoother.

I am a mac new comer (from linux) and considering going back for this reason. I can not afford such a thing on a 4K laptop. I can not describe how annoying this bug is for me. Running on Monterey 12.1. I have found the suggestion here to switch to the 50hz setup and I must test if it is better. I will report.

OK, nothing changed after 50hz switch. Especially electron apps are affected... Still the same problem. with Monterey 12.2 beta

Hi, I have just moved from MBP 15" 2019, to MBP 16" 2019. I have them side by side, both running Monterey 12.1 and the 16" model has lag feature when running on Intel UHD. When running on AMD - no issue. MBP 15" has no issues with lagging at all. They are running the same CPU, so this is completely ridiculous (both i9 versions)

This might be said many times already, but still I say it again: I think the problem is with how apple software handles power conserving with Intel UHD graphics 630 (iGPU) on Macbook Pro 16" 2019 (maybe so that Apple can say how much better battery life there is when moving from 15" to 16" or something). iGPU power draw goes too low when power is "not needed" and iGPU does not get power fast enough when it's needed. If you keep something running on screen that needs GPU (yes without 'i') and draws constant 1-2W power all lag is gone even when using just iGPU, but if you don't and you just type or scroll web pages, iGPU power draw is under 1W and there is the lag. I also tested some guys guide to make another account and run it in background (use cmd+ctrl+Q, so keep 2 users logged in at the same time, but just use your main user) causes constant 2W power draw from dGPU (yes dGPU) when using main user and this will remove lag from most of the places (with iGPU), but for me this caused new problem with lag in youtube videos (judder in every 15-30 seconds). This seems to indicate that iGPU and dGPU are somehow connected, even if you force use just iGPU or dGPU.

...and still only way to get rid of lag with macbook pro 16" 2019 is to use Catalina or only use dGPU.

Currently I'm using gSwitch 1.9.7 program and switch between iGPU and dGPU quickly depending on what I'm doing.
Videos --> iGPU (using dGPU with videos draws too much power and there is no lag in videos with iGPU)
Writing and web browsing --> dGPU

P.S. For me, changing screen refresh to 50hz took away typing lag (must be magic), but scrolling web pages or watching videos is not good with 50hz.
