Hi Morpheo,

There are two possibilities:
  1. The most likely is that SIP was disabled at some point in the past. The state of SIP is stored in the PRAM (NVRAM) so that it persists over restarts. You can use nvram -p to print all the PRAM variables, one of which is usually csr-active-config. (On my system the value is %80%00%00%00, which equates to a csrutil command outputting enabled)
  2. You may have used an older boot.efi file. I can't remember the exact versions, but I think Version 2 branch boots but doesn't enable SIP. Although I have a vague recollection that SIP does not work, but the csrutil command still reports it enabled. Therefore my best guess is item 1 above...

Thanks rthpjm. I guess you're right about #1 then. On this disc I had previously installed El Capitan and in fact disabled SIP, then went back to Mavericks for a while. Two days ago I reinstalled (upgraded) El Capitan again. I'm staying there now ;)

...My csr-active-config value is w%00%00%00 which must mean disabled compared to yours.

Relevant user options for SIP: * csr-active-config 0x0 = SIP Enabled (Default) * csr-active-config 0x3 = SIP Partially Disabled (Loads unsigned kexts) * csr-active-config 0x67 = SIP Disabled completely

PS: On my Sierra machine nvram -p csr-active-config gets an error.

nvram: Error getting variable - 'csr-active-config': (iokit/common) data was not found

installed a zotac 1060. runs quiet.
working fine in windows 7 after updating and resetting the drivers.
in osx installed the nvidia drivers, but no luck yet. will have to wait for an nvidia update.
happy the card works.

Question,

I'm thinking of buying a cheap used macbook pro. What would you suggest I buy for less than $400. I think a 15" would be ideal but not sure what model possibly something in the 2010+ year range. This would just be mostly for surfing the internet no major projects on it.

I do like the older 17" models too for the large screen but I'm worried about upgrading to El Capitan because of the graphics card. I'm seeing the 17" laptops for $200.

A 13" is def too small for my taste, but all in all I'm looking for something in the 15" screen range that can update to El Capitan without all of the boot.efi headaches.

Thanks for looking.

Why are you asking this in this thread? MBP section maybe?...

I posted there too, but I thought it would be helpful to post here too because I want to upgrade it to El Capitan.
This thread is specifically intended for unsupported machines. Post-2010 laptops don't need any modification to install El Capitan, AFAIK.

Ok, slightly off topic, since it looks like my old Mac Pro 1,1 will get left behind with Sierra I'm thinking of turning it into a home server with Apple's OSX server software. Has anyone done this? Does the server software effect the boot.efi like the updates did?

Not at all. Server is (however quite complicated and with a lots of settings, but...) just another app.

Thanks for the info. I'm just looking to centralize my Photo files and music. I may must start with plugging my external drives and sharing them, my biggest issue is getting Windoze machines to see the shares.

I did have OSX server on this machine when it was still running Lion natively. And yes I did find it complicated.

Why not use a USB 3.0 port on a Cisco/Linksys Router if you just need a network share.

That's not what the Server is for... It takes 3 clicks in "Sharing" preference pane, "File sharing" section on a freshly installed OS X, save your $$ for more disks.

Hello everyone :)

I'm currently having a nightmare with my Mac Pro 1,1 system and using any unsupported OS (anything after OS X 10.7.5). I keep getting continuous kernel panics and it's driving me mad. I've used multiple hard drives (both SSD and mechanical), swapped out RAM cards, reset the SMC & PRAM and even installed the official NVidia drivers for my card, and I still can't get it to function. My system is at the stock configuration except I'm using an NVidia 8800GT.

I was beginning to think that it could be my GPU so I plugged it into my brothers PC and flashed the Apple 8800GT ROM to the GPU so now I can see the boot screen at startup but I'm still getting kernel panics. I did however notice some artefact when I had the card installed in my brothers PC but these artefacts haven't occurred at all when using my Mac and I'm able to use CineBench in 10.7.5 without any issues. The system is completely stable in 10.7.5 but anything newer would lead to a kernel panic 5 minutes after I have successfully booted to the desktop in El-Capitan. I would really appreciate any help at all! I have attached a copy of the system report of the last two kernel panics that occurred. Thanks again!

swapped out RAM cards

There have been many users report similar KP issues. In almost all those cases the problem lies with the original 512MB RAM cards. We have typically advised people in this situation to purchase higher value RAM cards (2Gb or 4GB). Buy them in pairs, buy as much as you can afford. The important thing is to stop using the 512Mb RAM cards (do not be tempted to fill empty slots with the 512Mb cards, otherwise you will still experience KPs).

We can only speculate, but the newer OSes may assume contiguous memory boundaries at values that are now incompatible with the 512Mb cards, hence the KPs....

Those users that have followed this advice have reported back via the forum that their machine has stabilised, and that the KPs have stopped.

I have removed the two 512MB modules and used 2x1GB modules connected to slot A, board A and a kernel panic occurred again. I've just now tried to boot the system with a spare 2GB module and it boots but the kernel panic happened again. I can't manage to keep the system running for more than two minutes. I booted up the Apple Hardware Diagnostic test and performed an extended hardware test and everything passed.

Update: I went out today and purchased a used ATI 5770 (Mac Pro Edition) for £130 ($172 USD) and I was still getting kernel panics after installing the GPU. At this point I was going mad! I know it couldn't be my GPU anymore, so I decided to gather up all of the ECC RAM modules I had available and test the RAM using something other than the Apple Hardware Diagnostic test. I connected one pair each time and used a RAM testing utility called Rember. Some DIMMS came back faulty (address errors), and some passed. I then connected up all the good RAM I had and now the machine is stable (fingers staying crossed! lol). I managed to boot into El-Capitan and run GTA: San Andreas for a good 35 minutes without any errors. Sadly I now only have 2GB of RAM available. Now I'm trying to find a way to get my two thunderbolt displays connected to my Mac Pro.

Okay, but you MUST have pairs of RAM cards, a single 2Gb card will also give you problems.

You don't describe the total amount of RAM you have installed....?

I installed a single 2GB card earlier and it booted just fine. I currently have 2x1GB cards installed. The 2x512MB cards are faulty. I also have 2x2GB cards but one is faulty also.

£360 will buy you two 30" Cinema Displays...

Very true, but unfortunately I invested into two Thunderbolt Displays two years ago and it would make sense to one day invest in those adapters to make use of my displays in the future (with or without the Mac Pro). Sadly £360 is outside of my budget for now so I will start saving so that I can have my Mac Pro connected to them. At the moment I'm running my Mac Pro on a horrible LCD monitor -_-. My priority right now is to purchase a RAM & CPU upgrade and get my Mac Pro running at the 2,1 specs.

I have just reinstalled El-Capitan and all of a sudden I'm getting kernel panics again.

I believe that you need more RAM.
10.7 is very old and would run in a small memory footprint. Yosemite and El Capitan are much newer, they will require higher minimum specs. I would suggest you look to buy a second 2Gb RAM card matched as best you can to your existing one. Install only the two 2GB cards.

If your budget can stretch, buy more 2Gb cards. You will benefit from it...
