Do we need the com.apple.Boot.plist in SystemConfiguration? He mentions "For 10.10.5 Media only" but I wonder if that would apply to El Capitan as well. I assume his guide was last updated for 10.10.5 but obviously not for 10.11..

I've followed the guide (attached) to the letter. The only different was: instead of using a USB Dongle, I created a separate partition of 16GB to the HDD where El Capitan installed. I always do this just in case I want to reinstall the OS later. I then copy it to a USB Dongle to use it on friend's Mac Pros that might want it.

Also the boot.efi files coming from here, not from the links on the guide.

BTW, it's way faster to use the HDD instead of a USB Dongle for installation media ;)

@jeanlain happens to me too since Yosemite, it's either Apple's bug or compiler's bug. It's barely noticeable if you boot from SSD drive.

Perfect thank you. I see the guide you attached doesn't mention 10.10.5 anywhere, but Hennessie updated it with another info regarding a direct 10.10.5 installation. Anyway, I guess it's irrelevant since you obviously didn't have it in the guide you used. I used to do it on USB sticks as well (for Mavericks and Yosemite), but this time I've made a partition on an external HD... I have the correct boot.efi as well. My installer in now ready and I'm going to install El Cap on my 1,1 later tonight. Fingers crossed ;)

A LITTLE HELP!

I installed El Capitan from another machine onto my MP 1,1-2,1 Yosemite hd.

I replaced the boot.efi files on the i386, Coreservices and Recovery HD. I ran Disk Utility, put it back in the MP, fired it up and I get the black screen with the apple logo except it freezes with text that appear to indicate kernel panic...

Any thoughts???

Thanks VERY much!!

try booting to the recovery partition

if that works, you did that one right, if it doesn't go back and do again

remember to check size of all 3, if 600+ Kb, still original

the EFI32 fixed one is 314Kb

Anyone else have issues with the new Disk Utility? Not sure what it is, but I am not able to erase one of my hard drives; it just hangs without and progress on the bar.

did you try to boot the recovery partition?

did you check the size of the 3 files after you switched them?

The SSD drive with El Capitan installed appears in the Systems Prefs Startup Disk line up as 10.11. Starting up from there give the kernel panic scenario. I tried to boot to the recovery drive by cmd-T. Nothing. It booted to the kernel panic screen...

Anyone running 10.11 with a flashed ATI 5770? If you are have you noticed any speed improvements over 10.10?

As far as I know this gpu does not support metal.

I used to, but mine is currently out of commission. However, I am currently running a lesser card (Radeon 6450... in spite of the higher number [man, I hate GPU model names]), and it's running El Capitan just fine. In fact, it's just as smooth as it was with Mountain Lion. You shouldn't have an issue; the 5770 performs way better than my current card does, and the current card is already doing well.

Anyone know a good CPU-monitoring application that's FREE and compatible with El Cap? Sadly, MenuMeters (a nice, free one) isn't compatible with El Cap.

Dang... sweet machine!

Thanks, I'm glad it's still got some life left in it!

For anyone else installing on a similar setup, this is what I did to get it running:

1) Connect Mac Pro via Target Disk Mode to a Mac that will run El Capitan

2) Boot off the Mac Pro drive and copy the installer to Applications

3) Install El Capitan

4) Install NVIDIA Web Driver, reboot to the main drive on the El Capitan-compatible Mac

5) Copy the boot.efi to all 3 locations(/usr/standalone/i386, /System/Library/CoreServices, and the Recovery HD) and repair permissions (sudo chflags nouchg)

6) Boot up the Mac Pro!

Note: I have 2x 30" Apple Cinema displays which don't work so well with the web drivers and the GTX 960. If I have them both plugged in while booting, the machine reboots continuously. I have to boot with only one display, then plug in the second one. This does not happen with my (flashed) Radeon 5770.

Yes, this is exactly what I did and works fine :)
I tried to do it twice now, but without success. I followed the instruction word by word with the only exception that I had the Flat Package Editor already in my utilities folder.
The installation started fine, everything looked o.k. First the white Apple logo on black background, then the colorful OS X logo of El Capitan. But after a couple of minutes the process stopped with an error message (I translate it back to English):

"OS X could not be installed on your computer. An error occurred while extracting files from the packet "Essentials.pkg". Finish the installation program to restart your computer and try again."

Do you have an idea what could have gone wrong?

I installed it apparently without any problem, when restarting I got either a grey screen, or if my installer HD is connected, it boots into the intstaller after a while. By disconnecting the disc I was expecting a question mark at restart as it doesn't seem to recognize the OS, but all I get is a gray screen. I'm trying to reinstall as I type this. My boot.efi files were properly replaced on the installer HD, I don't know what gone wrong for now.

If it still doesn't work my other option would be to reinstall an older OS on my external HD and see what's going on on my El Capitan partition. Again the installation seemed to go just fine.
