I'm ready to blow now:

Apple Store Trafford Centre: Had stock, so I could have purchased a new contract and phone (activated) and returned my inactive one to CPW for a refund. Unfortunately, was declined credit check probably due to trying to take out two contracts inside a week. Apple said nothing they could do. O2 customer services said "It's Equifax's decision." - which, as we know, it a load of bollocks.

Carphone Warehouse Instore: Said because I ordered online there's nothing they can do and they have no information on inactive iPhones because it's dealt with my central customer services. Again. No help whatsoever. I also know it's not true because my local CW was able to pull up my details and resubmit for activation on Friday.

Carphone Warehouse Cust. Serv: They say they can only tell us what they know which is that there is a problem and it's being worked on. No timeframe was given for resolution and they didn't know what the problem actually was. Also, I wasn't allowed to speak to a manager.

O2 Customer Services: Still giving the line "there's a backlog - it'll be 24-48 hours." When asked if they'd received my details from CPW they didn't know and advised me to speak to CPW.

Three companies, one product, £249 shared between them - and as my iPhone quite rightly says ... "No Service."

Thanks for the update. Nicely finished post. ;)

I'm glad you like it. I also like the way when you ring CPW, one of the lines in the song (Something in the Air by Thunderclap Newman) is "We have got to get it together. We have got to get it together now."

I couldn't agree more.

Oh, btw, CPW are now saying they've had an e-mail from O2 saying that they expect activation of all CPW phones by 1pm tomorrow.

Still waiting too.

Annoying thing is that if I hadn't queued I wouldn't have been late for work, and could have gone to the Apple store got a white one and had it working by now. Live and learn I guess.

Russ, if your iPhone hasn't been activated yet then ask for a refund. Both the O2 and CPW websites say you can, if the phone has never made a call.

Then pop down to the Apple store and get a white one. :)

Have you got a link on the O2 website I can point them in the direction of if I get any hassle? Can't find it.

I might phone Regent Street and do that if they still have white.

Can't seem to find it now, but if I were you I'd call any O2 store and ask - but since the contract hasn't started you shouldn't have a problem.

I'm all up and running got my 16black at a o2 store I managed to walk out of the store without signing my contract and only paying £60 LOL had to go back and sign it . Was about 3pm yesterday I was okay but the staff at the store didn't put the orders throughbubril 2pm yesterday

just had the o2 shop where i bought it from on the line. apparently my credit card wasn't to my home address (actually it definitely is) so the ID check didn't work. gave the stupid bint a new card, it was acepted and then i'm activated on network within 30mins!!!!!

she admitted the reason i wasn't sim-activated was because it wasn't processed properly in the store!! was she sorry? hell no!

Finally working here, didn’t get a call from O2 just randomly restarted it and its finally working.

Bought mine in Oxford Street London at about 8:20 AM (Second in line) from an O2 store.

People I've set up a quick and dirty website to gather some information about our shared experiences. I'd be grateful if you'd contribute your own experiences, or even just leave your name and details of where and when you purchased:

Excellent, well done.

Here's Carphone's free phone number 0800 0491008 - it takes you to the same place as the 0870 but free of charge. Go to saynoto0870.com to access a huge database of alternative numbers.
here's O2's 0800-005005

Also, you have my authorization to paste any of my posts from here onto your page.

My experience has been identical to yours minus the credit issues. I also had to try for 4 hours to get through to iTunes activation - though that's unrelated to CPW's fiasco it added to the frustration.

Any chance you can e-mail me a quick rundown of your experience rather than me go trawling? I'll add you to the site as I'm sure the numbers are going to make a difference...

Still waiting - my experience so far

OK here goes -

I ordered my iPhone 3G from Carphonewarehouse on Monday and it arrived
first thing Friday morning (7am).

I was home around 11am and managed to connect through iTunes (with a
minor error) - I can alas only use my iPhone as a glorified iPod
Touch.

Until now (17:00 Sunday) I am unable to connect to 02 with "no
service" as my connection message.

I am so tired of turning my iPhone on and off to try and "activate it".

I have made several calls to 02 - twice I was cut off.

On Friday I was promised activation by the end of the day and this
morning I was informed that the SIMs were being activated manually and
I would be connected today.

I then get a mail from 02 customer services (as I tried all routes to
get hold of anyone) - they inform me there is no record of my
contract!

I have just returned from my local Carphone and they agree my account
is set and my SIM is registered to me and my iPhone. The Carphone guy
tried to call 02 - after 45 minutes of being on hold he gave up.

He has promised to call first thing tomorrow
to continue the investigation. He has my old mobile number, my work
email and my personal email. I sincerely hope he does get through and
contacts me tomorrow otherwise I will be very unhappy.

I have now responded to 02's mail complaining about the shoddy service
and their remark that they do not have details of my contract
(something I still find amazing and shocking).

How can 02 not have anticipated such demand?

I wait and wait... I am happy to let you know how things go...

Keith, my I post your experience on the site (above)?

As a tip to check if your phone is activated or not, rather than turning it on and off all the time, you can call it from another phone and if you're still not connected it'll say "the number you have called is not recognised, please check the number..."

Also, turning it to Airplane mode and back should make it start "searching" for service again as well, so no need to turn the phone off.

O2 said earlier that all their backlogs should be dealt with by end of business today. 6pm is end of business is it not? Still "No Service".

Evening all,

Unfortunate first post but thought I should post my experiences here too after reading this on -Garry-'s site:

Sun 18:02 - Another pattern emerging is that many of the iPhones still awaiting activation were ordered on Monday/Tuesday. CW iPhones ordered later in the week appear to be being activated in most cases.

(feel free to use this if this is any help -Garry-)

Ordered my iPhone 3G from CPW at 10am Thursday 10th June from their website, bought it completely on impulse after reading various iPhone stories on Digg/Reddit etc earlier. Not expecting to receive the phone for release day, which is fair enough day before hand, wasn’t expecting to really.

Got an email from CPW at around 9pm saying my order had been dispatched! Woo :)

Pretty much same story from now on, glorified iTouch ;) just waiting on sim activation from o2.

Cheers guys,
Matt
