Anyone else experiencing odd sounding road name pronunciations compared to iOS 15?

Does every new iOS release “reset” Siri in some way that alters the way she tries to pronounce things?

I think so. I have a French last name and despite training it repeatedly, the training gets tossed after every update.

Apologies this has been addressed somewhere in this long thread; I didn’t want to start a new thread for it:

Even though my “preferred mode of travel” is set to Driving, sometimes Maps will start off with Walking instead. For example: I reach a destination (while driving); I stop navigation (or it stops on its own); and then a few minutes later, I start navigating home. My estimated time to get home will be 8 hrs. (or whatever), because Maps started off with walking instead of driving… I have to stop navigation and redo it.

Any clue on how to prevent this? Thx

Sounds like a bug. I’d report it.

Speaking of bugs...there is some EPIC nonsense going on with Siri pronouncing road names. In particular with the Cross Island Parkway Service Road in Queens.

For the past few days, although the visible direction in the black box looks correct, Siri will announce, "Turn left onto Cross Island Parkway Cross Island Parkway Service Road." ...Repeating Cross Island Parkway twice. It does this consistently.

Today...I can't even repeat what Siri tried to say. But it was something along the lines of:

"Turn right onto Cross Island Parkway Cross A-G-H-E-dollar sign Island Parkway Servich Road."

The exact string of letters I can't recall, but I do remember there being a dollar sign in there. And then she butchered "Service".

Anyone else experiencing Siri saying...odd things during directions? Besides what I mentioned above, she has also started saying odd things with Avenue, like:

"Turn right onto 46th Avenue...oww."

Did I hurt her?

Public transportation directions are now available in Dubai.
Always good news when Apple releases a feature in a country or a city. I am still surprised that Apple does not release this feature to more countries. This should be a basic feature on Apple maps like turn by turn. I can say the same for real time transit. This feature is available in a small group of countries. It's really frustrating because it's already available in many countries on Google maps.

I forgot to mention this a couple of weeks ago, but when people were complaining back then about Siri pronouncing things wrong, I noticed something else. The voice seemed to change completely...and I mean that in a good way. Not sure what they tweaked, but Siri (using it for turn by turn on CarPlay) just sounds so much more natural to me over the past couple of weeks. Anyone else hearing it??

I have also noticed she sounds more natural since the update to iOS 16.

But man oh man...some strangeness during this same time frame.

"Pt" went from Point to Port.

Most roads with "Service Road" in the name cause Siri to have a stroke. Wish I could record audio while driving. It's nuts.

I guess I'm in a boring area where I live now...nothing but "streets", "drives" etc. No weird pronunciation errors experienced on my end.

A question came up on Reddit about Maps sending people to the correct terminal at an airport.

Despite my calendar entry from Delta giving nothing more than the flight time and basic flight info, Maps still grabbed that and parsed the correct terminal based on that information.

I also noticed earlier in the week as I was checking out other options, just typing in “LGA” as a destination, Maps offers up location refinement down to the gate or any other POI within the airport as seen below.

Dunno what this is, but my maps randomly blurs up hiding the map. Finally took a picture of it. Have no idea what this is, but its pretty unsafe for my phone to randomly blur up like this.

(I snapped the photo at a red light stuck in traffic…and kudos if you can see what I’m listening to).

Apart from being annoying, I don't see how it could possible be unsafe.

Indeed, pretty annoying. But not sure what is unsafe about it. Try restarting your iPhone, hopefully that solves the problem.

Kudos for the soundtrack. End credits for the Batman Returns Soundtrack.

Some reasons its unsafe:
Since it happens at random, it introduces uncertainty for reliance when driving. So when you glance at the screen for any given reason, if it doesn’t show up…”thats funny”
Sometimes it’s easy to miss blind turns. I know super first world.
When I’m a passenger in a taxi, I might pull up the route to make sure I’m not getting ripped off, or staying on track. Backseat driver, or just cautious? You tell me.
Kid starts screaming for a rest stop, and you see how close you are to one and then you miss the off-ramp. Ladies and gentlemen start your screaming.

That happens in AOD mode, you can still see the directions, I love it as at night the screen dims and doesn’t blind me while driving.

My iOS16 Maps observation of the week...a TON more complaints (on Reddit mostly) from the international community, and I think that's a GOOD thing!

The complaints have moved from, "why isn't Apple Maps available in my country?" or "Apple Maps is useless in my country!" to really specific complaints about "new" features. Yes, Apple Maps has some serious catching up to do in the international markets compared to Google, but progress is happening.

Looking forward to some more international detailed releases soon!

Interesting article on changes at Waze and its future.

Is there any relationship between the cities with the detailed city experience and cycling directions?

Ie, if Sydney and Melbourne do actually get the detailed city experience before the end of the year - hopefully this week - can we expect cycling directions to be available too?

I think there was a correlation. (But of course that doesn’t equal causation 😂). I do think every city that has the detailed experience also has cycling directions. But not every city that has cycling directions has the detailed experience. (The US being a good example of this. We have cycling directions across the entirety of the country, but only a handful of our cities have the detailed experience. We have some pretty big cities that still don’t have the detailed experience, and aren’t even mentioned yet as “coming soon”).

Interesting read and I don’t doubt much of it will come to pass!

... not seeing them in BE yet (tried rebooting as well ;-) )
Finally seeing them now.

Also seeing Israel, Palestinian Territories, and Saudi Arabia. Israel is the only one with Look Around, and it covers the whole country.

As for potential future City Experience releases...Tel Aviv might be one. Seeing a few buildings that have more detail than the rest. Jerusalem I would give a good chance as well. If you look at Old City Jerusalem in particular, there's some pretty obvious standouts!
