Alright, now that we have France, Monaco, and New Zealand released…how do we think the rest of this year is going to play out? We already have a list of 11 upcoming countries/regions from Apple, so that makes this a little easier.

We can already shorten that list to 8 after yesterday’s release. So based on average testing time, I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple groups those remaining 8 and release them by region, giving us 5 in one release and 3 in the other. This would give us Belgium, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Switzerland all at once. And then give us Israel, Palestinian Territories, and Saudi Arabia all at once. Given how long each release is in testing, I don’t think they’d be able to break up those 8 into groups any smaller than that and still get it done by the end of the year at this point. I think it would make sense to do it grouped like this because these are all pretty small countries. Of the remaining 8 on the list, Saudi Arabia is larger than a lot of these other countries combined, if I’m not mistaken.
It makes sense. We can imagine that the Benelux countries, Switzerland and Liechtenstein will be the next countries released around September. The rest will probably be released in December. It will be interesting to see if Apple is collecting pedestrian images in Israel. On the other hand, I am quite perplexed about the Palestinian Territories and Saudi Arabia. Own or third-party data. I think this will be the second option.

Updated wiki with NZ release details and link. Also has AR directions for Auckland and Wellington. (Still missing in Sydney & Melbourne, Australia despite being mentioned as coming this year... at launch last year!)
https://www.apple.com/nz/newsroom/2022/07/apple-rolls-out-all-new-map-across-new-zealand/
From the press release:

Three-dimensional cities for users to explore, with unprecedented details for neighbourhoods, commercial districts, marinas, buildings and more. Now users can see elevation details across a city, new road labels and custom-designed landmarks in cities around the world, including London; Los Angeles; Montreal; Paris; Philadelphia; San Diego; San Francisco; Vancouver; Washington, DC; and more.”

Sounds like Apple is talking about the detailed city experience? And they mention Paris. Odd since they didn’t mention Paris at WWDC when they listed the cities that were getting the detailed city experience later this year.

Perhaps Apple will release Paris between January and June 2023 as Canadian cities.

Took a look around Vegas and came across a particular indoor map. The Venetian. The indoor map covers three levels (the Casino floor, Retail level, and Mezzanine level).

This is the first time I’ve seen an indoor map that isn’t just retail or airport oriented. Granted though, the map of the Casino floor is showing the restaurants, mainly. Bit still, Venetian stands out as the only casino on the strip that has indoor maps of the casino floor.

I would kill for some indoor maps in Singapore malls. They are the most confusing places in the world. Spent an hour looking for a store yesterday.

Spotted an Apple Maps car driving around Leuven, Belgium last Friday 🥳

How do they not have offline maps?

Why are they still using yelp for reviews?
My guess is offline maps is a "nice to have" and not at the top of the list for features as most any country where Apple's new native Maps are available, have coverage. Even years ago, it was a rarely used feature in other maps apps...but again, nice to have, so I'm sure it will come out once actual Maps expansion hits a point to where Apple feels it is "necessary."

Yelp is on the way out and being replaced with Apple's own review system introduced a couple of years ago...but you can't just flip a switch and have nothing there.

An aside maybe, but I'm surprised Apple didn't beat Google to the punch! Placing themselves so forward in preserving the planet's resources

I've moved to Google Maps quite a bit for its smarts in finding the least eco-heavy route (saving the most energy), pretty nice move on Google's part

I think it has been shown that the "eco" route is the same as the fastest/most direct route 99% of the time...Apple most likely will introduce a similar option when it releases elevation data across the countries as thaht is typically the main factor in causing a greater use of gas (as well as traffic). It's already a feature in their electric vehicle routing option (most efficient route)

...and also, amending my previous rule I like to break all the time:

Don't argue with idiots on main threads about mapping AS WELL AS Reddit users who don't know how to use Apple Maps and then call me "wrong" for stating something can be done.

I sense a definite “sub-tweet” here.

Reddit guy backed off a little bit after reading through my explanation and trying what I had said in multiple threads prior...which I always appreciate.

One of the points he brought up, and I can't completely explain, is when Maps decides to stop the current route or "end navigation" and start a new route based on the destination you have selected.

His particular request was "directions to Target along my route" as I suggested, but Maps would "end navigation" to get to the Target. My explanation was that there was indeed no Target "along his route" and Maps was simply starting a new route since he either wanted to travel backwards or too far off his initial route for Maps to consider it a "stop."

So, trying to prove my theory, while I was just driving about 30 minutes North of my house to visit a supplier for my job, I asked Maps for "directions to Target along my route" knowing that there was none on the way. It found the closest one and let me add it as a multiple stop option even it meant getting off the highway and back on to go backwards (more or less) for 15 minutes to get to Target before continuing on to my normal destination.

So...I'm a little stumped and would love to hear someone at Apple explain the routing rules or just why "end navigation" may ever come up. I do think my initial theory is spot on the vast majority of the time...and then I go and disprove it...but maybe there is a logical explanation? Like it's the only Target nearby? None are anywhere along my route or within 5 miles of my route?

I need to retire and just play with Maps all day... 😇

Agree 100%

Apple please add offline maps + get rid of Yelp and I'll ditch Google Maps forever!!
I think it goes back to the fact that Android (Google) has always been a more "power user" type of OS and while needed in certain situations, offline maps is not a high priority for the vast majority of day-to-day iPhone users.

It requires multiple steps in settings to download the proper area and then you lose functions like traffic and other "live" updates related to that like re-routing and more dynamic POI searches, etc.

I would chalk up Yelp as a band-aid to provide a service within Maps and despite it not being the best solution in some folks eyes, it did perform that function while Apple developed its own solution which has been rolling out over the past 18 months or so.

They seem to be ticking off the asks by priority as we have been discussing for years on here like cycling directions, multiple stops, integrated ratings/reviews/photos. I'm sure offline maps isn't too far off, but falls behind LookAround and adding new areas as well as the detailed Maps experience. I consider myself a power user when it comes to maps, and the only time I ever used offline maps was when I traveled to Sweden for work as I was too lazy to get a proper data plan for my phone...it worked okay for what I needed.

I also consider these complaints as a positive in some sense as people HAVE access to Google Maps and offline maps...they WANT Apple Maps because Apple has shown that their UX is much better than Google's and now it is Google playing catch-up on that front.

I’m a little surprised we haven’t seen the Vegas City Experience get released yet. Plus, given how long we seem to go between these releases, Apple might have to speed things up quite a bit to get all of the announced upcoming cities out before the end of the year. (Same to be said about rolling out the testing phase of the new maps for that decently long list of countries to come by the end of the year).

If I remember correctly, the first ones (besides CA) started showing up in August for the typical 4-6 week pre-release timeline....like NYC? Then released with iOS16.

That sounds right. Guess we’ll find out soon enough!

Duh...I have it right in the first post...NYC and L.A. were released at the end of September...and then HOuston a couple of months after that....and I specifically remember NYC coming out in August and actually having access...and then losing it right before I went there for the U.S. Open.
