I highly doubt I'd return my phone if they did a voluntary recall. I don't use the Grip of Doom when I hold it, so I have no complaints about it at all, other than some software bugs that will be worked out in iOS updates. Not to mention that I have the InvisibleShield applied perfectly to both sides and do not want to have to do that again.

Now, if they offer store credit, how would that work? How would you claim your credit? I guess those who went through this with the original iPhone can answer this best.

I’m just glad that there are only two days to speculate on this. How many threads will we have? Luckily, it’ll be over soon after 10 am PDT.

You wish. At 11am we'll just have threads complaining about the conference.

intresting.

I see
Free bumpers
Possible iTunes credit 50-100

external fix coming and owners can exchange for new ones

I see potential disappointment in your future.

Bumper makes sense, the credit makes no sense. External fix not likely at all.

AHAHAHAHA That's the BIG THING they said to watch out for with that memo to all their Store employees... ;)

Good job...

Isn't this just going to announce the White iPhone 4 availability date?

No, because it's a press conference.

Press conferences are not keynotes, they're not where new products and release dates are announced.

This is NOT going to be Steve up on a stage with a projector remote in hand, presenting to a crowded room.

The first rule in no excuse management is "Blame someone else".

Paraphrasing an old joke here

New CEO gets into his office and sees three letters (one marked "read me first" and then one with "2" and the third with a "3")

He opens the first

"To the new CEO - When you encounter the first problem you can't handle and everyone is against you, open up the first letter. It will tell you what to do."

Time passes - the CEO gets in hot water and opens up the letter marked #2

"Blame Me. Next time you're in trouble - open letter #3"

Time Passes and the CEO gets into a scandal and opens up the third letter

"Write Three Letters"

Suspension?

My thought is.. Apple might suspend temporarily the sales of iPhone 4 as not to damage further and spread the issues to other market. By doing so at least it can contained the problem and tackle it ASAP. So the announcement might contain that at this point no more iPhone delivery until they fix the problem and the delay announcement to another 18 countries.

Then once they have the fix, all the current iPhone 4 owner can send their iPhone back to apple to be fix or replace.

Giving a bumper for free is not a satisfactory solutions to all and even not a good repo for a company like Apple as everyone know it is not a total solutions.

Well it's just my hunch.

I just got emailed the press conference script:

(with apologies to The American President)

For the last couple of months, people have suggested that being CEO of this company was, to a certain extent, about character, and although I have not been willing to engage their attacks on me, I've been here many years and I can tell you without hesitation: Being CEO of this company is entirely about character. For the record: yes, I am an iPhone 4 carrying member WITH a BUMPER. But the more important question is why aren't you, Consumer Reports? Apple Fans aren't easy. Apples Fans have entitlement. You gotta give it good, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free bumpers? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.

I've known what consumers want for years, and I've been operating under the assumption that the reason these fans devote so much time and energy to shouting at the rain was that he simply didn't get it. Well, I was wrong. the fans' problem isn't that they doesn't get it. Their problem is that they didn't come up with the idea first!

We have serious problems to solve, and we need serious people to solve them. And whatever your particular problem is, I promise you, Microsoft and Motorola are not the least bit interested in solving it. They are interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it.

This is a time for serious fans, and Motorola - your fifteen minutes are up. My name is Steve Jobs, and I *am* the CEO.

I think they will updated us the status is of all of the back orders, orders

No, because this is NOT a keynote.

There's going to be NO stage, NO big projector screen, NO Steve Jobs presenting to the masses. It's a press conference.

When Apple want to announce a product or blow their own horn about sales, they do it at an Apple Media Event, otherwise known as a keynote.

They will talk about what a great launch iphone 4 was. They have sold well over 2.5-3 million units now. They are going to continue with rollout with international countries like China, South korea and other parts of Europe.
They will talk about very small users have complained about iphone 4. Apple will allow people to return the product with no restocking fees. Also, apple will most likely issue 30-50 dollars apple store gift card. Since many people have already bought bumpers, they cannot just issue free ones. People will just return every single cases they have bought.
They will talk about white iphone and future software update for ipad.
Steve will probably criticize how unreliable consumer report is.

Sounds about right.

Steve: Thank you all for coming. Now we've been getting a lot of great feedback about iPhone 4, and we absolutely LOVE your feedback. Here's a quote from Walberg:

[walberg video]
"Walberg: wtf, where is my signal"

Haha, what Wally is actually trying to say is "Where is my bumper?"

Now let's take a look at the bumper sales.... amazing. 3 billion bumpers sold.
Now, hold on a sec!

Why do we call them "bumpers"?

Well, I'll turn the floor over to my BFF Ive.

Ive: Thanks Steve, you're my BFF.
We called it the bumper because ... we wanted to take something... and BUMP it up... so that it became more spectacular. What did we want to bump up? The signal. We wanted to create a signal so incredibly average that no one would expect it.

We took a look at regular iPhone 4, and thought "Hey, you know, these signal is below average when I touch it here. Let's blow their minds and make it a beautifully average signal." And I was sleeping one night, I was kind of having a nightmare, you see, I woke up and.... I screamed BUMPER... and I have a baby monitor in my room you see, the other end of which is in Steve's bedroom, you know so we can keep tabs on eachother's genius dreams.

Anyway my horrible screams woke him up, and he loved it.

Steve: I'm happy to announce that the iPhone 4 will now come with built in bumper, but one more thing ..... FREE CANDY FOR ALL AT THE BACK ok thank you all for coming.

No way.......................Steve would never hand out free candy because he would be to worried that people would eat it the wrong way.

Does Engadget (or someone else that will be at the Press Conf) usually provide a play by play on their website during these events? I'm assuming it won't be televised, but I'd like to follow it as it's happening.

Presumably - and correct me if I'm wrong, please! - those people, like yourself, who are happy with their phones wouldn't look to claim any store credit, right?

Because that'd be wrong.

Probably just going to be a press release for iOS 4.1, but there's a small chance it could be about a verizon iphone. Either way, I doubt they announce anything like free bumpers/refunds/store credit.
