Man, T-Mobile has a killer sale: $360 for a brand new S7 and S7 Edge today only. Can be combined with their "tax free" credit promo too. Do I take that or go with the S8? Head says take the S7 for cheaper price while heart says wait for S8 even though it would be more pricey.
Hard decision to make! The S7 edge is no slouch..but the S8 will be like the Note 7 on steroids....

No joke, this is an incredible deal. I might consider it, too. How do you know it's today only?
[doublepost=1487781319][/doublepost]@MRU , what's the Class and U-rating that you want in a good microSD card for the S7 again?

Thanks.

It really is a tough decision. I'm considering it. $360 is a ridiculously good deal. The S8 is also the "first generation" of this redesign, whereas the S7 is the refined version of the last generational design that occurred with the S6.

What to do...

Well, I'm not surprised since the default screen setting has now dropped to FHD.

It's a bit surprising but think it makes sense for most people. I sat and went through every single Settings option for an hour, couple of nice little treats but otherwise generally business as usual.

Samsung are getting better with TouchWiz for sure. It's obviously no Pixel in that respect, but the S7 range really is the most well-round Android phone experience there is. I hope they keep refining it further.
I gave up on FHD, went back to WQHD. I noticed in WhatsApp and some other apps that text looks jagged and weird in FHD, while it is smooth in WQHD.

Class 10 (that's not so important as nearly all are class 10) the important part U3

Most folks buy Class 10 U1 cards because they are a lot cheaper, however they are by comparison very slow and not suited for things like 4k video recording etc...

Well, now the idea of a free projector with the V20 ($150 value or so) and the S8 trade up event (assumption) have me interested because the iPhone 7 had a trade up event last year with T-Mobile.

S7 Edge price bumped up to $480 today. I'm thinking this was a pricing error yesterday since both models were the same price and the edge is higher today. I did order an Edge yesterday though.

Nice job catching it. I thought it was weird too that the edge was the same price.

Decided to give it a week... So far, I'm only noticing the FHD in a couple of apps.

If there was a way to actively choose which apps used FHD or WQHD that would be awesome. E.g. Maps for me is fine in FHD and the battery life doesn't get killed as fast, etc.
[doublepost=1487890674][/doublepost]Still a solid camera in so many conditions...

This would really help a lot, setting what apps use what resolution.

It seems it would be difficult though as I have noticed how the whole UI shifts around when switching resolution.

Samsung must find a better way to do it.

Yeah plus it kills all open apps when switching resolution, so I realise it's a pipe dream for now.

Like you say, would be a VERY cool geeky-but-actually-useful feature if Samsung could figure it out.

The biggest issue with changing screen resolution is how ineffective it actually is at giving you a battery boost.

Take your laptop, does lowering it's native resolution give you a noticeable boost ? Not really.

Important part .....

You see even if the content on display is running at 720p or 1080p, the actual screen itself is still illuminating all 2k pixels. Those pixels are not magically turned off saving you power, you are just seeing some resolution internal scaling instead.

Therefore if you are saving no battery illuminating the screen in lower than native resolution, where could you get any saving?

The answer is on CPU and GPU power, but this will only likely be any use if you are gaming and would likely manifest itself moreover in better frame-rates for games than actual improved battery life.

2D content that is not taxing combined GPU/CPU which is 95% + stuff we do (Twitter, Facebook, Dialer, Calendar don't really require too much GPU) on our phones will not provide you with any inherent boost by running them at a lower resolution as they are not taxing the system as is.

So really outside of gaming, reducing the handsets resolution will provide very little improvement overall and the 'image softness' that is inevitable when running outside of native resolution may be a bigger negative than any possible performance improvement.

So currently there is very little point running at HD/FHD on your QHD device as the gains will be so negligible battery wise, and countered by the negatives of loss of image clarity.

Just remember, You are still illuminating QHD amount of pixels regardless of screen resolution and hold onto that thought, consider what you mostly do with your device, and you quickly realise just how inefficient a solution to improving battery life that this scaling actually is ...

You would get FAR MORE battery improvement if that's what you are seeking by merely dropping your screen brightness down a few notches than you ever will achieve by scaling the internal resolution.

There's an app called pixel off that does turn pixels off to save battery.I tried it back in the S5 days. I'd just assumed the Samsung feature did the same but it just changed native resolution.
My S7 edge is being fixed under warranty. I had the LED flip cover but it stopped working, took it back to the shop, they didn't have one so I opted for the clear view cover, bad move. It scratched my screen quite badly but Samsung are fixing it under warranty.
I'm using a Meizu M3s at the moment.
I'm quite impressed with this little cheap phone, it's making me reevaluate whether I'm keen to spend 1500+ NZ on a phone again.

OMG OMG OMG

So I was playing around earlier and I'm realising I must be super late to the party BUT.... My S7 Edge now has one of the best features from the Pixel!!!

Double tap the Recent capacitive button and it returns to the previously used app....

YESSSSSSS!!!

Thank you!

This is why I just stay in WQHD Mode, it looks great (text is smooth and sharp) and I still get great battery life, why spoil this excellent experience.

Must say with all the MWC stuff announced, it seems 2017 may be another boring year. Honestly no real major leaps.

In terms of Samsung it seems we may not see as big a battery in the S8 as we did in the S7 Edge, this makes me want to clutch on to my S7 Edge ever so much longer, as it's the 1st phone that I can truly hammer all day heavily and still have ~50% battery near my bed time.

I have been going at it, streaming, playing music in the car via BT, web browsing heavily, texting, getting emails on all 3 of my accounts, WhatsApping, watching Snapchat and Instagram videos, browsing FB and Twitter etc etc... And here I sit at 11pm with 47% battery, lol. This reminds me of when I used my "dumb phone" Sony Ericsson K850i Cyber-shot heavily whenever my Nokia Nseries Smartphone was in repair.

Nougat has been truly awesome on my S7 Edge. The battery life has been insane. I looked at it at 79% at around 11:30am this morning, and watched it trickle down as I simply hammered away at it, even recoding some videos and sending them via WhatsApp and watching a whole lot of Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook videos.

Truly amazing how efficient the Exynos SoC is in this beast :D

Bed time and still at +28%

I wonder how many days this phone would last time if I just used it moderately, lol.

That's awesome

Have you tried putting dark themes and black backgrounds on as well? I have a normal S7, and on the default touch wiz theme would get to about 8-17% depending on usage from 7am - 10pm

With a black theme and black wallpaper, its anywhere from 28-48% left ....usually in or around 40% before I fall asleep....basically just turning off all those extra pixels does wonders for battery life. Its what I love most about OLED. I also use the AoD as well.

Nougat isn't in Canada yet so Im looking forward to those battery optimizations.

Plus the black themes look cool :p

That is fantastic.

I use a dark Blue theme, I live the colour, I find it calming, lol.

I sometimes do give Black themes a try but I get bored of their blankness quickly.

The battery life on this phone is amazing. I have had it off charge since around 7am this morning, it's now 8:30pm almost and I am at 42%. Still plenty juice left to catch up on my series when I get into bed in an hour :D

I never thought Smartphones would ever get to this point, I remember how horrendous my Sony Ericsson Xperia X10i (my 1st Android) battery was, I'd be constantly watching that battery indicator, and the last 2-3 generations of Android Flagships have really gone leaps and bounds above what they used to be in Battery. My Galaxy Note4 had great battery life to but this S7 Edge has really taken it to a new level where I can use the phone constantly.

Many people talk about how certain phones have great battery but that's mostly Stand By battery, as a heavy user I have always wanted a phone that took a hammering all day and still made it to the night with enough juice to entertain me before bed. During the day I have music going, Skype chat, WhatsApp, 3email accounts, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, LinkedIn, the Google News and weather widget, calendar widget, countless calendar reminders for meetings etc... My phones spend pretty much most of their lives being used heavily and the S7 Edge has truly stood out as one that can take such a heavy hammering with no worries of Battery dying at any point.
