Does Safari 6 fix this? It's the worst thing about Safari in my opinion.

I LOVE safari when it comes to the multitouch gestures but the memory leaks are completely unacceptable!

I would LOVE to be able to use Safari, however, I can't STAND it's memory management. Barely browsing on the internet, maybe with only like 3 or 4 tabs open will take up ALL the RAM on my 2010 13in MBPro, and I think that's unacceptable considering it makes everything else run really choppy. (I'm on a clean Mountain Lion install btw)

I was using Firefox up until a week ago, but now I'm on Chrome, and loving it. The way it manages memory is AWESOME, and it's speed and extensions are pretty damn amazing.

Chrome is here to stay for me.

Safari is WAY faster than Chrome now, but the memory leak is still there. My 4GB of ram gets eaten in less than an hour of browsing. It's unbelievable, to be honest.

I also can't figure out how to clear my cache, cmd+shift+e doesn't work anymore :----------------------------------(.

So far Safari 6 is sloooowwwwww on my Mac. I haven't been able to upgrade to Mountain Lion yet thanks to the disaster known as the Up to Date program, so maybe that has something to do with it. I was actually considering giving Chrome a try since Safari is so slow. And I mean really, really slow

While it's only been one day for me, I can say this is the first time I've used Safari and didn't hate the experience immediately. I'm going to keep using it and it just might stick.

I loved the swipe gesture in Safari, but hated the beachballs. Safari 6 on ML has won me over completely - no more beachballs, very smooth & slick.

On the MAC I always used Safari because no other browser was just as well-made. On my desktop I don't even have Safari installed, I usually switch between Opera and Waterfox there.

To clear the cache go to safari prefs/advance and turn on developer. In developer you can scroll down and see it.

The only advantage Chrome still has is its wide range of extensions. But sadly the Mac version of Chrome has always been second rate, uglier than its windows counterpart and can't even display PDFs correctly, so Safari wins for me!

I only use chrome for Flash, because I chose not to have flash installed on my mac in any other form... :)

Safari was and remains my primary browser at home. I use Chrome for Facebook only (and Facebook only on Chrome). At work Chrome is my primary browser since I'm using Windows there.

Safari 5 won me over. Trouble is, now Safari 6 is out for OS X only, it may lose me again. I use Safari 5 on Windows at work too, partly for consistency, but also because it has some stuff which is useful for developing web apps targeted at iOS. If the Windows version is gone for good, I will probably switch back to Firefox or look at Chrome on OS X and Windows, because multi-platform matters to me.

used safari since Lion came out and I've stuck with it. No reason to change works great and has features. I hope they update the windows version though.

Safari became my browser "of choice" as soon as the iOS 5 beta was released with iCloud sync for my iPad. As you cannot change the default browser on iOS, there's no other option.

Personally, my browser of choice is still Firefox due to a consistent experience across platforms, and the level of customizability & control you have with it. (there are several options I have changed in about:config that let me fix annoyances I have in all other browsers, for example)

Similar to the way that people use Chrome for Flash, I actually do that with Safari. Safari is my "unrestricted" browser, whereas Firefox is my main browser with things like Flash locked out by default.

It bloated itself into irrelevance.
The irony is that it's actually a much lighter browser than Chrome. Mozilla have really been pushing for memory efficiency for a long time now and come out top in most group tests these days. Firefox is also the only browser to offer full image color management (Safari supports tagged images, Chrome doesn't support any) and has by far the best font rendering engine of any current browser.

It's still the best browser as far as privacy & security is concerned, if you care about that sort of thing, with extensions such as AdBlock Plus (still the most advanced version) BetterPrivacy (flash cookies) Cookie Monster (browser cookie management) NoScript (javascript) and RequestPolicy. (cross-site requests)

I think Safari 6 is a decent update, as I never used it as an RSS reader (I don't really use RSS at all to be honest).

However, there are a number of minor niggles; my biggest annoyance at the moment is a tiny change that means there's no longer a progress spinner on tabs. This is a bit rubbish if you have lots of tabs open, as you can't see which ones are still loading unless you switch to them and open the toolbar to see the progress in the address field. It's pretty stupid as it means you only get a progress indicator for the tab you currently have in-focus, which is bad if you want to upload something on a tab, or download in another while continuing to use other tabs as normal.

Seems to annoy me a wholly disproportionate amount for such a seemingly small feature, but I guess I didn't realise how much I relied upon it before! That and the change to the web-inspector to tiny icons only; I'm sure I'll get used to it, but the previous style was easier if you had the space to see the tab titles.

Otherwise it's a solid update, still speed, stylish and usable, which is why I've always preferred Safari.

Safari 6 is better as 5 - faster but it needs too much RAM (however I use adblock maybe that's a problem too) and therefore I use Chrome: it's more RAM friendly, it's fast and buitl-in flash support so no additional flash installation is needed and the tab management of Chrome is better. As Google is an internet company it would be really a shame to have only the 3rd best browser ;-)

It surprisingly has actually. I've been a devout Google Chrome user for a long time now. As I'm working on different operating systems throughout the day, Google Chrome provides an extremely stable and fast multi-platform browser (better than it's main rival FireFox in my opinion). I particularly like the fact it's bookmarks all sync.

However in recent times I'm using Google products less. I'm not sure why. Chrome doesn't do it for me any more either. And as I'm using VMs a lot more and secure computers, I can't sync things anyway. Therefore my unilateral browsing experience isn't require. That's when Safari comes in.

The new Safari is brilliant. I like the unification of the Google and Address bars - very good move. The fact iCloud syncs my bookmarks allows me to do a lot more things mobile (iPhone, iPad). I like the iOS-esque page scroll and in general the look is a lot better. Very sleek indeed.

what's astonished me with this thread is how many people are using Chrome now!! Incredible how it's come on in such a short space of time!

My issues with Safari pre v6 was utterly horrible laggy scrolling and the fact that after several hours of browsing, the 'Safari Web Content' (which I believe is some sort of content cache - but that isn't cleared by simply clearing cache!! - is this the same as the memory leakage issue?) would get to ridiculous sizes, and start to slow down my OS, never mind my browser - so I switched to Chrome, and actually loved the integration with all the google services, e.g. maps, translate, mail, google+ etc

However, as a bit of a fanboy admittedly, my first choice would always be the Apple product within an Apple OS, therefore, I have reverted back to Safari for now, and must admit, on first impression, the speed is massively improved - quite noticeably so for me at least. I had heard that they'd got rid of the web content cache issue, but a bit disturbed to see this morning, the file size of this component was sat at 600MB again.... Grr.....

So back to Safari v6 - for now - but jury's still out for the time being...

Can somebody tell me why I should try Safari 6?

My prior experience with Safari isn't great, but I've been using Chrome for over a year, so not sure what I'm missing out on.

Things I preferred with Chrome:

- Speed
- Website compatibility
- Tabbed Browsing
- That super predictive search feature
- Combined http / search bar
- Extensions
- Flash

All of these are things that should attributable to Safari v6 as well. In particular the first two shouldn't be any different than Chrome since they both use WebKit; Chrome may have a slight edge as they seem to update WebKit more aggressively, but WebKit nightly builds are packaged as custom Safari builds, so it's not exactly a laggard.

Everything else is in Safari, except for pre-packaged Flash but it's not exactly hard to install at which point it self-updates now anyway. Combined address and search bars is the only thing you've listed that's new to Safari v6, everything else was in the previous version already.

Cool, thanks. Looks like I might give it a go then :)

Long time Windows and IE user here...the rMBP is my first Mac ever (do own an iPad and iPhone though). I'm still using Lion (still haven't received my redemption code for Mountain Lion yet) and just updated to Safari 6.

Even when using Safari 5 I really liked it...it was a breath of fresh air compared to IE (never cared for chrome, firefox, etc.), and now with Safari 6 it's even better. A good bit quicker and has some of the functionality that I like with the iPad version.

So far I've been nothing but impressed with my first Mac, I'll never buy a Windows pc again.
