The thunderbolt standard requires the port be at least USB 3. If it's only backwards compatible with USB 2.0, it can't be labeled as thunderbolt. It can still be done, just can't be labeled as such.

I don't think anyone even makes a USB 2 only thunderbolt controller chip, but I guess it could be controlled via firmware.
It does worry me because there are a lot of thunderbolt devices that ARE thunderbolt only and don’t fall back to any other form of USB on a PC without thunderbolt… even when USB 3.0 speeds would be more than adequate for the device being used. Or even 2.0 speeds. Just a big fat no, can’t use em at all.

Like the Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle… was sold in both thunderbolt and usb 3.0 versions. Both are equally capable but one has more system compatibility than the other because the Thunderbolt one will not connect to a PC without Thunderbolt at all.

And then there’s the Focusrite Clarett+ 8pre… currently sold in both Thunderbolt and USB 2.0 versions that are otherwise identical 🤦🏻‍♂️

explain yourself. what about lightning is better than USB-C?
Well, for one, it lightning is physically more robust and reliable over the longer term. If you were to break off the lightning connector in the device, you just take something pointy and poke out the broken part....like if you break off a key. With USB-C if you were to break the connector you will damage the connector in the device and need to have it replaced. USB-c connectors get loose after time from plugging and unplugging. My company MBP has 2 of 4 USB-c connectors loose and unreliable from all of the plugging and unplugging to take it to meetings, etc.

switching to usb-c is terrible for the environment. thanks EU for this disaster.
As good as every device in my house uses USB-C _except_ my iPhone and a couple of peripherals at this point. Even my car has USB-C ports for CarPlay and charging. I have an abundance of USB-C cables. If a Lightning cable breaks, I have to buy a new one; if a USB-C cable breaks, I just go into another room.

It's gonna be mind blowing when i can use the same cable as my wife (albeit at USB2 Speed 😂)

USB C ports are a pain in the ass to use. I guess I’ll have to get a magnetic charging platform for my iPhone, Apple Watch & AirPo Pro. I will miss the lightening connectors, I guess I’ll have to take them all in to Apple for recycling. 🙁
How are Type C ports a "pain" to use? I like the fact that I won't have to carry around 2 different cables for my devices.

I wonder how long it'll be after the change to USBC before there's no cable in the box? Does the EU have a timeline for when the cable needs to be removed?

I won't miss lightning as I'll continue to use it for another year at least. I get the appeal of having all USB-C but that connector just makes me nervous. Already had a few iffy removals from my new Mac Studio. It's just not as robust as lightning, specs and standards aside.
People forgetting the MacBook Pro was using these for years. They're absolutely fine if your cables and connectors are built to a tight spec. The problem is when you get cheap cables and connectors they wiggle around a ton, but the Apple made ones are done extremely well.

And be able to carry just the cable that came with my iPad Pro and not carry an extra one just for my iPhone.

Incredible that so many don't understand how this is the exact same scenario as when Apple moved away from the old and outdated 30-pin connector to Lightning in 2012.

It's been ten years since then and the entire tech industry has moved on to something better.

Heck, even Apple itself has been doing USB-C for MacBooks and iPads for close to 8 years by now.

Why do you want to stay in USB 2.0 hell for all eternity?

*The "think of the e-waste" thing is not an argument when half of Apple's current lineup of products are already USB-C. You already own a USB-C cable if you're exclusively buy Apple products, or you own one if you have a mix of Apple and non-Apple products because the rest of the tech industry is already USB-C.

The speed situation is interesting to me. Are there a lot of users still out there plugging their phone into their computer to back up or to upload new music to it?
I think it's super useful if you are transferring videos and photos. I don't use iCloud for photo or document backup for privacy reasons. I don't keep anything NSFW on my phone, I'm just opposed to keeping anything private on cloud storage.

I’ve been through countless lightning cables over the past ten years, they’re not exactly robust. They break all the time and go straight to landfill.

Meanwhile, and this is anecdotal of course, not a single usb c in our house has broken yet.

So I’m happy to switch to usb c which will hopefully cut down on my environmental impact a little. It most certainly won’t make it worse.
And, anecdotally, in the handful of years we've had C cables in our house, including purchasing Anker ones to replace the cheap Amazon ones, they fail about 2:1 versus Lightning cables. Generally at the connector.

Purchasing new cables and tossing old ones that cannot be used any longer does not positively impact the environment. You're not going to cut down on how many cables you go through and statistically might use more of them because the connector is easier to damage versus the Lightning connector. I've only had 2 Lightning connectors fail since going to the second gen and both were because the cable fell in the floor and got stomped by one of my kids.

I’d argue that making millions upon millions of phones every quarter using precious metals and the most intense distribution channels to get iPhones worldwide is a lot worse changing all their models to have the same cable.

I can’t tell if you were being serious or not so I’ll stop there.

Steve said OS X setup Apple for the next 20 years starting back around 2001. Doesn't mean they're going to get rid of OS X anytime soon.

Narrator: They got rid of OS X in 2016

Or, if you like (since they called it macOS 10 for a few more years after that), they went to OS 11 in 2020 and we’re currently on OS 13… so Steve was right in a way, OS X lasted for nearly 20 years.

I don’t think Steve meant they’d get rid of macOS in 20 years either.

What “a lot” of users do and what power users do have always been two different things. I’d rather my professional needs were catered to than someone who just wants a Tik Tok machine.
I agree with you completely.

But having to argue that anything better than USB 2.0 is just for "professional needs" highlights how ridiculous this discussion is.

USB-C is the standard that you get in all new consumer tech and is dirt cheap to implement in hardware, even the high-quality and high-speed ports like the ones you see in MacBooks and iPads.

This positioning as anything better than Lightning as frivolous, weird, not trustworthy, "flimsy" or unnecessary just proves how deep the Apple propaganda goes.

And Apple fans wonder where the "iSheep" stereo type comes from. Lol.

Who in their right mind wants to spend $999+ on a smartphone with I/O that's 10+ years old?

Lightning was great in 2012.

But now, 10 years later, it's just time to move on to something faster, better, and cross-compatible with every other consumer technology product made in the last 5-10 years, "professional" needs or not.

Dissatisfied absolutely means EU had influenced the roadmap in some way. It's entirely possible Apple wanted a portless phone in the next few years and was going to push MagSafe hard (possibly eliminating the cable from the box by now so the user has to choose between buying another lightning cable or go MagSafe).

I mean… in a certain context he came up a year short since OS 11 was in 2020 and we’re staring down the release of OS 14 in a month or two. 😉
