Certainly seems like something that could be faked. Why in the world would Apple announce something like dark mode in a point update? Wouldn't they save something like that for WWDC?
Well, point updates have been brining more at times for a little while. Similar thoughts were expressed about Night Shift and iOS 9.3 last year too.

I agree. Suspicious. Looking at past posts though seems like there's a chance it's legit.

If you add it all up:

  • Early iOS 10 builds having vague references to dark mode plus the dark settings screenshots, etc.
  • Rumors of dark mode coming going back to that time
  • Recent suggestion by Sonny Dickson
  • This guy's Insta
A lot of smoke, there's probably some sort of fire. All these could easily be explained away. But I'm optimistic something dark is coming. And it's fun to anticipate and speculate.

Something to consider is that given the rumored name of the feature (and control center icon design) if it included more to it than something along the lines of a dark mode, like it would also silence notifications, perhaps dim the screen, etc. Kind of similar to how Low Power Mode does a number of different things and essentially locks them out from being changed back while it's enabled. Everyone who is mainly interested in a darker interface might not really be as happy about other things being changed as well.

Very true. I would speculate that perhaps it's both. A setting for a dark UI overall. And a control center switch to toggle a theater mode which switches to superlow brightness, dark ui, no alerts, etc. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

I think there will be quite a few people who will be disappointed if that's what it is and those additional changes/restrictions couldn't be disabled, given that many simply would like an option to have a darker UI and essentially nothing beyond that.

Do you really think an Apple employee would post anything about an upcoming release on Instagram? Their next job title would be "ex-Apple Employee".
Why not? It's a few days away from beta release in an x.x update. It won't be released to the public before March.

So night shift was 64-bit devices only. kinda worried they'll make some similar restriction for theatre mode, like 2gb ram devices only. :-/

I would be really surprised if they did that. From what I'm understanding about how this will work, I don't think it requires too many resources. They may just leave it out of the iPhone 5 and iPad 4 or limit it like how they didn't add the blur effect to the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 and 3 everywhere, just in the folders and the dock.

I am hoping my 6 is supported, but I'm a little wary.

Also concerned that it'll just change notification bubbles and dock colours, and the majority of things will remain light. We'll see I guess.
