OK folks, just completed a clean, fresh installation of V11.1 of Big Sur onto a partition on my (new) Samsung T7 1 TB external SSD:

Did not get a red screen, installation proceeded normally, and then migrated/copied needed files, folders, apps, settings, etc. from the internal SSD on my late 2018 Mac Mini. The Samsung SSD was connected to one of the Mini's USB-C ports.

Still need to do some testing. In Brave right now, and the font for the menu titles along the top row does look a little smaller, but it's OK. Will say, though, that the Mini is a little hot (that is where I launched the OS 11.1 Installer file from, along of course with the migration). And the T7 is also rather hot.

Off to do more testing.

M1 Mac Mini, was stuck on the updating screen for over an hour, then rebooted into recovery. I ran first aid on the drive then rebooted and am now stuck on the red progress bar too. Waiting to see if anything happens.

It eventually finished and everything seems okay. This was an update from 11.0.1 on a new Mac Mini.

Mine went horrifically slow after updating to 11.1. MBA M1 that is.

did a fresh install after as it was terrible, seems much better now even though its doing the usual indexing etc. Fresh install actually worked this time too :) took an hour to do which was good.

Update to 11.1 is now successfully done on my 2015 Macbook Air (8 GB of RAM).

Wow, I had completely forgotten that the updating mechanism was announced to have been changed from 11.0 onward. This is what happened: it took WAY longer than usual to "prepare" the update.

But once the computer rebooted and gave me the progress bar the process was faster than usual. So the overall time to update was not faster, but the period where the computer was unusable was reduced. I like it!

I don't use Spotlight at all, preferring EasyFind. Hence, much faster for me. Seemed like a normal. clean, fresh installation, even though I was installing it on an external SSD.

When I make the final move from Catalina to Big Sur (a little while to go for that), will be interesting to see how long it takes to install it on my early 2017 MacBook Air.

An HOUR, why so slow? Slow download?

Hey, I didn't find the official macOS 11.1 thread, so I'll ask it here: Does 11.1 prevents you from executing iPhone/iPad .ipa files? Or does this workaround still work?

Secondly, I'd like to ask if is it now safe to perform a clean install on an M1 Mac, or will I still brick it.

And finally, do you feel this new version snappier and power efficient?

Thank you!

my net isn't too bad its 80mb but its a large download isn't it and Apple is prob getting hammered with updates. But Im happy with that 1 hour total download and set up. I had to wipe this laptop 2 weeks ago as I was messing around and broke it, took me 5 hours of error after error to get it to finally install haha.

I have wiped my Mac today and compared to 2 weeks ago, the fresh install was a breeze. Just went into recovery mode selected erase Mac and it did the rest, no errors to report.

OK, so far my 3 browsers work fine (Brave, Firefox, and Google Chrome), LibreOffice is good, even printing a document with no issues (did not download any Canon drivers for my MX890 printer). I did run Thunderbird, It launched, got no warning, but I know it is not 100% compatible.

Really want to test Onyx and Thunderbird fully, but they are not compatible yet. Updates should be coming for both of them shortly.

Bloody hell. This is the second update in a row they are screwing up. I guess I will leave it like this until the morning and if nothing happens I’ll restore from TimeMachine backup. A lesson to everyone not to update on day one.

A little "weird" thing: my post above was while I was in my "Catalina" environment. As I've mentioned before, for that new Samsung 1 TB external SSD, one of the partitions is called "Big Sur", which is where I installed the new version. But on the desktop (with Catalina), it shows that partition name as "Update". Also, within the Startup Disk Preference Pane, it shows "Big Sur Data" as the startup device! But once I select it, my Mac Mini does restart from (I assume) that Big Sur partition. Startup is a little slow, but to be fair, I am starting up from an external SSD (though it is connected to one of the Mini's USB-C ports). On Big Sur's desktop, it does show that partition as Big Sur.

So far, Big Sur is fine. But the real tests will come once I can test Onyx, SuperDuper!, and Tech Tool Pro.

Update took less than ½ hour on my late 2013 trashcan.
No problems. Driver for SoftRAID seems improved.
Now in addition to volume names also the volume icons/labels are displayed. Wonderful.
The original update to Big Sur from Catalina took about 3x that long.

I am beginning to like the new OS. :)

Where does the Big Sur update installer get downloaded to? (I know it gets auto deleted when the update is completed however if an update fails then that installer file might stay on the system clogging up and taking up disk space due to an unsuccessful upgrade attempt)
The applications folder?

Same question for me. It used to be the applications folder but the .1 update never showed up in my folder.

Mine is upgrade from 11.0.1 - still nothing is showing and stuck like this.
Same on my MacBook Pro mid 2015. I restarted a few times and now I get the progress bar at like 10%....

I am still asking myself why there is no update from Apple which is stable from top to bottom.

For me it's 01:00..so I am gonna spend my night restoring and reinstalling all the apps.

Thanks Apple for the stable updating system.

Btw I have Filevault enabled. Maybe that's a thing too

I can't believe it.... I don't wanna jinx it. But the lag between swiping from desktops is gone! The four finger swipe is Catalina smooth. Also, youtube scrolling is fixed. I was having lots of lag, hiccups, and stutters in other areas, especially closing apps. Will update as I do more work, but I've had the most issues with photos and music since updating, I hope these are improved the same as I have observed from my surface level observations. I'm also on a 16" MacBook and the performance was terrible on the 11.0

Is there any way to downgrade to 11.0.1? Its really a ****ing nightmare... no app will update or install through app store anymore and external monitors are not working...
Made reinstall via appstore but doesn't changed anything....

Tried already a lot of things like pram/smc reset, log out/login appstore .... nothing.

Update took almost 2 hours, with 1st 15 minutes download the update (about 3gb). Last 10 minutes, the fan spin very loud. So far so good. No noticeable changes in speed whatsover. Mail works fine. Safari also worked fine. Laptop is now back to silent with 54-58 degree Celsius. Macbook Air 2019/8/512.

Download seemed slow for a mere 3.27GB - but at least it wasn't the meltdown that was 11.0.1.
Installed over that (eventual) 11.0.1 on a 2017 Air, seemed no worse than any other install - and the results seem okay, but too early to say for sure. And I don't expect anything earth-shattering in the way of improved daily functionality.

Nothing in its its notes to suggest Apple has solved the 'older Macs' issues that gave users pricey doorstops, though.
