Same as others. If it's stock/refurb model it ships in 24 hours but it won't have faster delivery. I've done that twice, last time yesterday.

Wow you went thru it yesterday?? what did you have problems with??

I was so paranoid because i started reading that apple may not exchange your product if you have less than 7 bad pixels.. And sure enough, they tried to give me that excuse this morning.

Customer service told me that it was acceptable to have some bad pixels... i automatically changed my tone of voice and told them that even thou it was acceptable to them it wasn't acceptable to me at all. And i wasn't happy with my product and i wanted an exchange or a refund..

Right away she told me that she would transfer me to the sales department and that they would setup a replacement for me.

When they transferred me i told them i needed a computer because i had a project due next week, Eli (sales department) told me he was gonna send an email to expedite my shipment.. So if i get the email today and i ship it today i should be getting my replacement tomorrow..

I'm still shocked to hear that so many people have been getting these pixel issues thou.. For the prices they sell their products I always thought that they put in top of the line products..

Oh well, i was told that if i get another one with a faulty screen i would definitely get it replaced.. I hope keep their word...

I had dead/stuck pixels too and it was already replaced once so that was my second iMac in few weeks. I called 'em about a week ago but sent it to 'em yesterday. Replacement should be here on 14th.

Well, I'm glad you're getting your replacement. I ordered the same model, and it is due here Saturday. I hope I get the bigger hard drive without the dead pixels! ;) Seriously though, I am going to be angry if I have to return it because of bad pixels. I'm taking a class and have to have a computer at home. I'm mailing out the MBA in my signature on Monday, so this iMac will be the only computer I have. I'll probably buy a super cheap Mac laptop of some kind soon, but I won't have it by then. Crossing my fingers.

Best of luck on your replacement!

How many dead pixels are we talking about here?

If it's only one or two, I don't see what the big deal is.

I feel like customers definitely deserve to get what they pay for... but Apple *does* state their policy, and at what point are you just being greedy?

On a 24" iMac at 1920x1200 you have 2,280,000 pixels. TWO MILLION.
Is a single dead pixel really going to kill you?

Think about how much time you are costing Apple & the shipping companies, how much wasted fuel you're spending by having these products shipped back and forth, and how much your own personal energy you're consuming fretting over this.

You've got people in the country that manufactured this product working for $1/day, and yet you're crying a river over 2 pixels that will "ruin" your high definition display.

If you're talking 6+ pixels here... excuse my rant, it does not apply to you.

Even thou I believe that a dead/stuck pixel doesn't matter to some people, there are some things that may bother you but won't bother me. I wouldn't care if the back side of it cames scratched.

But being that the screen is the most important thing to me, I think is wrong to sell a product with flaws.

Since when do I have to accept something I'm not happy with? This isn't a $30 product. Its $1,300 . And why is it ok for a multi billion dollar company to sell screens that are not perfect. And then telling the consumer to deal with them. I bought a 20" dell monitor and its still perfect after 9 years and it only cost $200

But most important why are you here criticizing what other people don't want. Its even worse to come here and complain about people who are not happy with a brand new product that is not in perfect condition. I have more regards for a person who is concerned about a product than a person like you who comes here and judge people.

You say why waste the gas and "apple's" time. Well your little rant isn't gonna change a damn thing, I will do it 10 more times if I have to. Give me what is advertised, if screens are not perfect they should put it on the description "screen may have flaws!' Until then I'm gonna get what I deserve for my money. Btw if apple took the time to begin with for this issue none of this would happen.

Like I said, forums are for people with problems not for people to come and complain about them.

I just wanted to correct a statement. A forum is a place where " ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged." So if you come from a country that limits free speech, by all means support what you say. A forum is a place for both sides of a topic to discuss their views. So anyone can say whatever they want without fear of people telling them not to. I can appreciate the idea of 'Not criticizing' people, but I think it is legitimate to criticize a person's beliefs. We do it all the time in Philosophy, and other areas.

I think we need to get back on topic discussing what people have ordered, and things of that nature. We can discuss our views on returning products with dead pixels in a different thread. :)

I agree with you, I'm from miami so I'm used to free speech, but your philosophy has some contradictions lol, either way I do believe that the whole pixel issues belongs on another thread, I was trying to follow thru so in case someone needed help at some point they can read thru the same thread.

Either way thanks for the mature post, ill post the results of my recent experience and if I have to reship ill start a new thread. Over all is obvious that some people have some questions about the pixel issue.

Best luck to all buyers!

My refurb 24" iMac 2.8 ghz just arrived today. I was just about to run out the door and I saw the FedEx truck pull up - I'm glad I didn't miss it.

After I'm done with work, I'm looking forward to unboxing and setting it up. I haven't had a Mac since OS X 10.3, so I've been looking forward to this for a long time.

My only concern is with all of this dead pixel talk - I hope they didn't send me one of the iMacs that you guys have returned!

I took the long road to buying this iMac (after thinking about a Mac Mini for a long, long, long time). I decided that the 24" refurbs were just too good of a deal to pass up.

Like I stated in another previous post in a different thread:

I was looking solely at the Mac Mini (for a long time), and then decided that I would stick with a pc since I could get more bang for my buck. I ended up buying a refurb Gateway quad core with 9800GT graphics card, 8 GB Ram, TV Tuner, etc for $100 more than a Mac Mini. I thought that I would be happy with it - and would put off buying a Mac for a later date (I have owned many Macs in the past, and although I love OS X, I always felt that I was not provided enough freedom in hardware choice).

Well, after receiving my refurbed Gateway, I wasn't very happy. Warranty was only 90 days, and the PC came with the hard drive disconnected (not really a big deal). I plugged the hard drive back in - booted up and found out that the Quad Core that was in there was a Q6600 instead of the Q9500 that was supposed to be in there. In the one day that I had it, it locked up on me a couple of times as well.

I ran a geekbench on it - and it came in right around 4300. I looked at the iMac benchmarks and realized that they are not that far behind in processing power. I decided that the extra power and nice large screen justified going with the 2.8ghz iMac over the mini. I am not a fan of all in one's, though, and decided the iMac would be acceptable if I purchase the Apple Care extended warranty. I really wanted to get a Mac this time around - and was just being cheap I guess. So I called the place I ordered the Gateway from and it's going back.

The next step was I logged onto the Apple store and saw that I was approved for their 12 month 0% offer - and decided to go with the 2008 24" iMac. I have other PC's around the house that I can remote desktop into from the Mac - so I really won't be losing any functionality - and now I have a really nice iMac coming.

I still am planning on picking up a Mac Mini sometime in the near future, though. I'm looking forward to finally being back on a Mac - it's been a long time.

Perhaps Lauren also returned her laptop to Best Buy and is doing the same thing as we speak :D

So I forced myself to work extra hard getting this iMac - I just don't know how to take the easy road!

I'm just happy it's here and now I just can't wait to begin the process of 'switching' back to Mac...

First one had 2 stuck pixels and one was in the center of screen. Second one had dead pixel in center of screen and at least 7 stuck ones around the screen.

I saved 2 years for this Mac and I'm not going to be satisfied if there's dead pixels

My guess is because it is coming straight from China. That is about the length of time it takes mail to get from China to England.

I rang TNT (UK) and I've been confirmed it will be here on Tuesday. I guess it's now sitting at TNT over the easter weekend, argh!

I ordered it on the 3rd I think, but it got delayed and cancelled by them, then re ordered by them, now it's on it's way.

I'm going to sit and watch my wall now for 2-4 hours.

iMac newbie

Hi All,

I am about to become an iMac newbie. Closely approaching "the big 4-0" in age, I've worked with PC's for the past 20 years. My current PC is about 6 years old and runs Win XP (17 inch monitor, Hewlet Packard CPU, 1.4 GHz, 512 RAM, 51 Gig hard drive). I have not been looking forward to replacing it with Vista. I've heard nothing but wonderful things about iMacs and OS X. In an attempt to educate myself, I've been lurking on your message board for the past 2 months.

Last Wednesday, I decided to go ahead and order a refurbed iMac, plus AppleCare (24", 2.4 GHz, 1 Gig RAM, 320 Gig hard drive -- I'll likely up the RAM to 4 Gigs in the near future, but am waiting to see what it actually ends up having, since I've read that some here have received more than they paid for)... it's in transit, on schedule, and should arrive tomorrow (4/11). Typically, when I've upgraded PC's, I've purchased the cheapest thing on the shelf because I tend to keep PC's so long that even the cheapest CPU ends up being 100x faster than the one I'm replacing. This new switch to the iMac will likely leave me stupefied by it's speed in comparison. :)

I've learned a lot from this forum and have found the "getting started" and "switching to mac" type links on the Apple site.

My "new to me" iMac will be used for image management via Photoshop, website building, Quicken for checkbook balancing, and surfing the net. I'm not much into gaming, but that could change with the oomph of the iMac. For fun - not my day job - I do b&w film based photography, print in a traditional wet chemical darkroom on fiber base paper, and scan the neg's to upload to my website. I have PayPal on the site and have sold a few prints in the seven years that it's been online, but nothing recently since the economy slid into the toilet. Yet, photography remains a form of meditation for me and I continue to enjoy it.

Nice to meet you all, I'm looking forward to learning Apple/Macintosh as a "second language".

Susan

Gratz! You'll love it. First few days you're little bit lost with OS X but after that you find it much easier, better and stable than Windows.

Susan, I think you are going to love your new Mac.

If there are some apps that you still need that are windows only, you can use Virtual Box for free to run XP virtualized in OS X (http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads), or you can remote desktop into XP using Microsoft's RDP client for OS X (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/remote-desktop/default.mspx). Right now, as I am transitioning over, I find these tools help me.

I have it setup and transferring files. I'm really happy with it.

I think I have 1 stuck/dead pixel towards the lower left center - but it only shows up against white backgrounds - and I feel like I almost go cross-eyed when trying to see it. Against a white background it appears as if it is red, but I don't see it against a black background - so I am assuming it might be dead instead of stuck...

I used the iMac through out the night and looked hard for bad pixels and did not see anything. I only noticed it today when I logged on here and started a post, as I was typing against the white background. I don't think I am going to worry about it, because it really isn't an issue to me.

I have to say, this iMac is amazing. In the past I really trash talked all-in-ones, but after having it in front of me - I really get the concept now. The display is incredible. I have it setup as a dual monitor with a 22" LCD I was using before - I can't believe how bad my old LCD looks next to it. The difference is amazing.

It is good to be back :apple::D:apple:

Susan-

Similar situation as you, although hit the big 4-0 three years ago.

I have/had been a PC user since 1984, briefly dabbled with a Mac in work in 1991-1993, and even owned the very first iMac model (G3) back in '98 (but had many hardware issues so went back to PC's). As of August 2008, I am now using a 24"/2.8GHz iMac and absolutely love it. Just recently switched my kids to a 20"/2.66GHz refurb a month ago, and they are loving it as well. I can NEVER see myself willingly going back to a Windows machine for home use, although my company-supplied laptop is a Dell running XP. Unfortunately my employer will NEVER go to Macs as we have 60,000 employees and a HUGE installed base.

I found OSX incredibly easy to learn, and much more intuitive than Windows. It's a non-issue really. If you can use the Windows GUI, you can surely use OSX.

I am also into photography (as well as videography) and use Photoshop Elements, Nikon Capture NX2, View NX, Photomechanic, iPhoto, etc etc. You will surely benefit from the added RAM; if you only get 1 gig (or even 2 gig) upgrade immediately to 4 gig. It is the best $50 you'll spend (even less if you find a rebate on Amazon memory).

Welcome to the club - after getting my Mac in August, my wife is the only holdout left in our house of 5! And don't let the OSX naysayers using Windows bother you - they claim that only ignorant, unsophisticated, non tech savvy users use Macs. I can attest that is surely not the case - I may not be a system admin, but was a serious Windows power user for quite a few years and find OSX incredibly better.

Well, my refurb 2.8ghz 2600 Pro iMac came today. It was in a plain white box. Everything in the box was packaged like new, and everything seems new and is perfect. No extra features. I received what I was supposed to including 2GB RAM and a 320GB HDD. I already have the 4GB RAM kit sitting here and will install sometime this weekend. I have already used Time Machine to transfer all my stuff. There doesn't seem to be any dead pixels. So far so good.

Hello Gentlemen,

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'm looking forward to learning something "new". I thought about purchasing a 4 Gig kit to have it waiting, but decided to hold out until it gets here. Just in case Apple "blesses" me w/ more than I paid for and I get a machine w/ 2 or more Gigs, I don't want to hassle w/ returning the RAM.

Thus far today, I've busied myself w/ cleaning the crap off my desk to make room for the ginormous machine that's on it's way to me. :)

Susan

I tried to do the cleaning but after few days I found all my crap from my desk again :D Maybe I just can't have a clean room;)

Yes you can. When you go to your order status click the "Track this shipment" button and it'll give the info about carrier and carrier's tracking number.
